"Until recently cancer was virtually unknown in marine mammals. Today it is a growing problem and indications are that chemical contamination is a culprit. Only 33 cases of cancer have been found worldwide in cetaceans, other than the SLE Beluga, according to Daniel Martineau.
Until recent years cancer was virtually unknown in dolphins. Today a growing number of cancers are being found in dolphins around the world.
The susceptibility of dolphins to toxicants is made worse because dolphins lack genes that process these chemicals (see technical papers at back of this report).
Because of genetic similarities with humans it would be foolish to ignore this trend in dolphins.
Whole populations of dolphins are in danger of extinction due to accumulation of toxic chemicals. Human beings who eat fish from the environments shared with dolphins afflicted with high levels of contamination would be well advised to take these dangers into account in their selection and levels of consumption of fish.
HOW DOES THIS AFFECT POPULATIONS, SUCH AS THE JAPANESE, WHO COMMONLY EAT CETACEANS SUCH AS WHALE MEAT AND DOLPHINS?

TOXINS, CARCINOGENS, ONCE INSIDE A HUMAN BODY, DO STRANGE AND TERRIBLE THINGS. PERSISTENT ORGANIC POLLUTANTS – A LINK TO JAPAN’S DECLINING BIRTH RATE? Organochlorines (OCs) such as PCBs, dioxins, PBDEs and many other persistent organic pollutants are known to mimic estrogen and other hormones.
They are sometimes referred to as endocrine disruptors.
Japanese who eat large quantities of fish, and especially those who eat whales and dolphins, may be exposed to very high levels of these endocrine disruptors.
Men may become more feminized and women accumulate higher than natural levels of estrogen and estrogen imitators. A group of Japanese scientists reported in September 2007 that the breast milk of Japanese women tested was contaminated by PCBs.
The scientists reported the likely route of ingestion into human bodies was through consumption of fish.
“One of the causes of the human contamination is believed to be intake of fish,” said Sochi Ota, associate professor at Setsunan University. It should be emphasized that dolphins, at the apex of the food chain, have far higher concentration of contaminants than most fish.
Sperm counts in Japanese men, already low, are decreasing and chemicals that disrupt human hormones may be to blame, according to a report by Yasunori Yoshimura, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Keio University. An analysis of semen samples from 6,000 Japanese men found a 12 percent decrease in the number of sperm over the past three decades. Samples taken from medical students in the 1970s contained an average of about 65 million sperm per millilitre of semen. The figures decreased to about 63 million in the 1980s and further dropped to about 57 million in the 1990s. Environmental chemicals that mimic human hormones could have a role in the decline in sperm counts, Yoshimura said.
Japan has one of the highest life expectancies in the world. The ratio of people aged 65 and over to the whole population more than doubled from 7.07% in 1970 to 18.0% in 2001. This ratio is magnified because of the low recruitment rate of babies into the society.
Japan’s population is aging. A flat population level is only maintained because Japanese are living longer.
Recruitment into the population has fallen to a record low. Japan’s population was 127.3 million as of 2001. The annual growth rate fell below 1% in 1977 and by 1999 had dropped to 0.16.
The number of people under 15 years of age dropped to a post-war low of 18.28 million in 2001, a decrease of 190,000 over one year.
Whether low sperm counts in Japanese men is related to this phenomenon should be studied on an urgent basis. "

"Dolphins and humans are exposed to the same toxins in seafood. Over 2 billion people worldwide rely on seafood as their major source of protein and 60% of people live in coastal areas. Resident coastal dolphins are exposed to marine pollution in the same fashion as humans who frequently consume seafood, thus any indication of disease in dolphins has implications both for humans who eat regularly from the same areas and/or are otherwise exposed to the same toxins.Although dolphins share most human mammalian genes, including CYP1A and CYP2B, they lack the ability to adequately catabolize type I and II dioxins, which therefore preferentially accumulate. Unfortunately, observed results of these bioaccumulations are suppressed immunity, infections and cancers particularly B-cell lymphomas and “myeloma-like” immunoblastic lymphomas (Bossart: J. Vet Diagn Invest 9: 454-458, 1997).
This pattern of diseases in turn corresponds with the local and systemic effects exemplified in Balb/c mice during pristane-induced plasmacytogenesis and in humans exposed to toxins. "
CARCINOGENS AND CHEMICALS Tests on pilot whale meat taken from Taiji found 2.6 ppm of PCBs. The government’s limit on PCBs is 0.5 ppm. In humans, PCBs can cause liver disease, ocular lesions, compromised immune response, reproductive problems and cancer. Dioxin, recognized widely as a carcinogen, is another toxin found in dolphin and whale meat. An expert in organochlorine (OC) contamination, Dr. K. Haraguchi, has reported that one meal of 50 grams of whale or dolphin may constitute the TDI (tolerable daily intake) of dioxin for a person weighing 50 kg. A single gram of blubber from the most highly contaminated dolphin sampled would exceed tolerable limits by a factor of three. In humans, OCs can cause effects in reproductive/sexual development, plus immune system damage, thyroid disorders, nervous system disorders, endometriosis and diabetes.
In a study presented to International Whaling Commission (IWC) conference in Australia, Japanese researchers reported finding dioxin levels up to 172 times the tolerable daily intake in marketed whale meat.
The study was headed by Koichi Haraguchi of Daiichi University in Fukuoka, Japan. Researchers looked at 38 types of whale and dolphin meat sold in 1999 and early 2000 in Japan.
Dolphin meat showed the highest levels of dioxins.
Minke whales from the north Pacific were next highest. Southern Hemisphere Minkes were relatively low in this chemical.
Cetacean products such as bacon/blubber are contaminated to a degree unacceptable for human consumption according to standards set by Japanese health authorities for dioxin-like compounds. (Haraguchi, 2000.)
Researchers concluded people who eat relatively large quantities of fish are at risk for dioxin-induced neurobehavioral effects with particular risk for infants. (Simmonds, Haraguchi et al. Human Health Significance of Organochlorine and Mercury contaminants in Japanese whale meat.)
HIGH RATE OF CANCER IN BELUGA WHALES AND HUMAN POPULATIONS IN THEIR RANGE. St. Lawrence Estuary Belugas. The Beluga population has dropped from an estimated 5,000 to current estimate of 500-600.
The SLE Belugas were protected from hunting by the Canadian government starting in 1980 but so far there is no sign of recovery.
SLE Beluga are contaminated by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) produced by local aluminum smelters. The extraordinary level of cancer in this population is consistent with the hypothesis that PAHs are involved in the etiology of cancer in mammals. (Daniel Martineau, et al)
Cancers found include epithelial cancer of the proximal intestine, gastric cancer, gastrointestinal epithelial cancer and mammary cancer. Cancer of the proximal intestine is rare among all species including humans.
It is frequent in bovine and ovine species exposed to herbicides such as 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid. An interplay between a virus and environmental carcinogenic compounds may be at work in the SLE Belugas.
Particles consistent with papillomaviruses have been observed in papillomas found in a significant number of carcasses.
Carcinogens are present in the environment of the SLE Belugas.
Benzopyrene was found in high concentrations in blue mussels in the Saguenay River.
Sediments of this river, part of Beluga habitat, contain 500 – 4500 ppb of total PAH dry weight, a concentration level significantly higher than Osaka harbor where PAH concentrations are 2870 ppb.
The PAHs originate from upstream aluminum smelters. SLE Belugas feed in sediments. These observations suggest that SLE Belugas ingest PAHs in benthic invertebrates that may contribute to the elevated rate of digestive tract cancers in the population. (Martineau et al.)
(Martineau: Cancer in Wildlife) “The rate of cancer in the SLE Beluga population is higher than in any other population of wild terrestrial or aquatic animals”.
Cancer was detected in 27% of adult beluga whales found dead.
The cancer rate of 163 per 100,000 animals is much higher than in domestic animals and humans. According to Martineau,“The human population living in this habitat is affected by rates of cancer higher than found in other parts of Quebec and Canada in general. Some of these cancers are epidemiologically related to PAHs.”
Japan obtains much of its whale meat from it’s widely rejected pseudo-scientific hunts of whales in the Antarctic and Northwest Pacific. While Japan calls these hunts “research” operations they have been condemned worldwide.
Drive fisheries, primarily conducted from the village of Taiji, and harpoon hunts conducted on Dall’s porpoise in the north of Japan are additional sources of cetacean meat.
The Asahi Shimbun (Japan’s second most widely circulated newspaper ) reported in 2003 that studies of several varieties of whale meat conducted by the japan health ministry revealed that many samples contained unacceptable levels of toxic chemicals, such as PCBs and methyl mercury .
The samples tested were taken from fat and muscle meat from five Beard’s beaked whales taken off Northern Japan. The ministry’s research group detected PCB levels between 5 and 11 ppm and methyl mercury levels between 0.37 and 1.3 ppm in the whales muscles. The Health ministry limit is 0.5 for PCBs and 0.3 for methyl mercury in sea food. The Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intake (PTWI) for methyl mercury would be exceeded by an average consumption of only 16g of whale liver products per week. The highest level of mercury ever detected was 204 ppm in the liver meat of a whale, exceeding the “safe” level by 400 times.
Japanese researchers report that approximately half the intake of dioxins in Japanese people comes from fish. "

Caught on the Great Barrier Reef, coral trout have been discovered with large black spots on their skin, now identified as cancerous melanomas.
One researcher documented that 15% of these fish found on the reef show signs of skin cancer. The percentage may even be higher due to the fact that some fish may have died due to illness or consumed by predators."

"Captured by the Kurdish People’s Protection Unit (YPG) fighters in Northern Syria in November, Abdurrahman Abdulhadi, a Syrian national-turned Daesh (Islamic State) fighter, says he was trained in Turkey before receiving his first assignment with Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).
The YPG maintains external security in the three Democratic Union Party (PYD) run areas, and is fighting Islamist groups, primarily Jabhat al-Nusra and IS.
The PYD, an offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in Turkey, has effectively been ruling parts of Syria after government troops were forced to withdraw from the areas in 2012. With special permission from the local Kurdish authorities, Russian journalists received first-hand testimony that Turkey is “a friend” of Islamic State.
“They only appear to be enemies, however, they are friends,” the 20-year-old Abdulhadi, whose brother, Til Berak, is still fighting for IS told Sputnik Turkey.
While Turkish nationals constitute only about “10 percent” of jihadists he had come across, the prisoner said Turkey is actively training Islamic State fighters.
“In August 2014, I was training in the Turkish town of Adana with one of ISIL’s Emirs,” Abdulhadi said, adding his month-long training was completed with 60 other fighters in a camp “not far from the airport.” The captured IS soldier said military training was conducted by two officers and one of them only “spoke Turkish, so another one had to translate for him.” “Once a week we had shooting classes where we were taught to use Kalashnikovs, machine guns and other arms,” the 20 year-old said.
"We were trained in Turkey because ISIL’s command thought it was safer here than in Syria because of the bombardments there.”
While the camp was officially declared to be one of the training grounds for the Free Syrian Army, the YPG prisoner says, "all sixty of those who were there were ISIL members.”
“These were Syrian citizens, many of whom arrived in Turkey in search for a job initially, but later joined Daesh,” he explained.
After completing his training, Abdulhadi was tasked with escorting Syrians who wanted to join the jihadists. “After I finished the training, I went to one of the districts in the Turkish town of Adana. My task was to meet the newly arrived recruits from Syria. After the training we sent them to the Turkish town of Urfa. From there the recruits were transferred via Turkey-Syria border crossing back to Syrian Raqqa. And from there further across Syria,”
Abdulhadi explained, saying this was the only assignment he received from his “emir” during the deployment in Syria. Besides helping to train recruits, the IS prisoner says he was deployed in Syria for brief periods. He was eventually captured in the village of Tal Afer on November 1.
The prisoner also revealed that IS is now receiving ammunition in trucks disguised as non-military cargo. He said that such low-level fighters as him have no idea where the arms come from.
“Weapons were brought to us in civilian cars, not in military ones because fighter jets might have bombed them. ISIL is now mostly using civilian vehicles. I’ve heard they put vegetables on top of boxes with ammunition, so that war planes do not spot them.”

AMERICAN GENERAL, EX-DIA HEAD BLOWS THE WHISTLE.
An interviewwith retired Lieutenant General Michael Flynn, former head of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), given to Mehdi Hasan, confirms earlier suspicions that Washington was monitoring jihadist groups emerging as opposition in Syria. General Flynn dismissed Al Jazeera’s supposition that the US administration “turned a blind eye” to the DIA’s analysis. Flynn believes the US government didn’t listen to his agency on purpose.
DECLASSIFIED PROOF US ex-intelligence chief on ISIS rise: It was ‘a willful Washington decision’.
The classified DIAreport presented in August 2012, stated that...
“The Salafist, the Muslim Brotherhood, and AQI [Al- Qaeda in Iraq] are the major forces driving the insurgency in Syria,”being supported by “the West, Gulf countries and Turkey.”
The document recently declassified through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), analyses the situation in Syria in the summer of 2012 and predicts:
“If the situation unravels, there is the possibility of establishing a declared or undeclared Salafist principality in eastern Syria… and this is exactly what the supporting powers to the opposition want, in order to isolate the Syrian regime.”
The report warns of “dire consequences” of this scenario, because it would allow Al-Qaeda to regain its positions in Iraq and unify the jihadist Sunni forces in Iraq, Syria and the rest of the Sunnis in the Arab world against all other Muslim minorities they consider dissenters.
“ISI (the Islamic State of Iraq) could also declare an Islamic State through its union with other terrorist organizations in Iraq and Syria, which will create grave danger in regards of unifying Iraq and the protection of its territory,” the DIA report correctly predicted at the time.
Those groups eventually emerged as Islamic State (IS formerly ISIS/ISIL) and Al-Nusra Front, an Islamic group loyal to Al-Qaeda.
Unlike the US State Department, which rushed to label the declassified DIA memo as unimportant soon after its declassification, the DIA’s former head expressed full trust in the 2012 report, stressing he “paid very close attention” to this document, adding “the intelligence was very clear.”
Lieutenant General Michael Flynn became “the highest ranking intelligence official to go on record,” saying the US and other states, notably Turkey and the Gulf Arab states, were sponsoring Al-Qaeda-led rebels in Syria with political support and weapons in an attempt to overthrow President Bashar Assad.
When asked why he didn’t attempt to stop the US coordinating arms transfers to Islamic extremists, the retired general said:
“I hate to say it’s not my job, but my job was to ensure the accuracy of our intelligence,” said Flynn, who also served as director of intelligence for the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) during the US hunt for Bin Laden.

"A commander of Iraq‘s popular forces disclosed that wiretapping of ISIS‘s communications has confirmed the reports that the US planes have been airdropping food and arms supplies for the Takfiri terrorists.
“The wiretapped ISIL communications by Iraqi popular forces have revealed that the US planes have been dropping weapons and foodstuff for the Takfiri terrorist group,” Commander of Iraq’s Ali Akbar Battalion told FNA on Wednesday (REPORTED MARCH 21, 2015).
He noted that tapping on ISIS disclosed the terrorist group’s regular contacts with the US army, and said, “They exchanged sentences like if they would have a share of the ammunition dropped near (Spiker Military Base) or responses such as ‘you will also receive your share’.”
“The US forces by dropping weapons and ammunition for ISIL, specially in Yassreb, Al-Ramadi and near Spiker Base in Hay al-Qadessiya have provided a lot of help to the ISIL,” he added.
Many similar reports by Iraqi officials and forces have surfaced in the last few months.
“The US planes have dropped weapons for the ISIL terrorists in the areas under ISIL control and even in those areas that have been recently liberated from the ISIL control to encourage the terrorists to return to those places,” Coordinator of Iraqi popular forces Jafar al-Jaberi told FNA.
He noted that eyewitnesses in Al-Havijeh of Kirkuk province had witnessed the US airplanes dropping several suspicious parcels for ISIS terrorists in the province.
“Two coalition planes were also seen above the town of Al-Khas in Diyala and they carried the Takfiri terrorists to the region that has recently been liberated from the ISIL control,” Al-Jaberi said.
Meantime, Head of Iraqi Parliament’s National Security and Defense Committee Hakem al-Zameli also disclosed that the anti-ISIS coalition’s planes have dropped weapons and foodstuff for the ISIS in Salahuddin, Al-Anbar and Diyala provinces.
In January, al-Zameli underlined that the coalition is the main cause of ISIS’s survival in Iraq.
“There are proofs and evidence for the US-led coalition’s military aid to ISIL terrorists through air(dropped cargoes),” he told FNA at the time.
He noted that the members of his committee already proved that the US planes have dropped advanced weaponry, including anti-aircraft weapons, for the ISIS, and that it has set up an investigation committee to probe into the matter.
“The US drops weapons for the ISIL on the excuse of not knowing about the whereabouts of the ISIL positions and it is trying to distort the reality with its allegations.
“The international coalition is only an excuse for protecting the ISIS and helping the terrorist group with equipment and weapons,” Jome Divan, who is member of the al-Sadr bloc in the Iraqi parliament, said.
He said the coalition’s support for the ISIL is now evident to everyone, and continued, “The coalition has not targeted ISIL’s main positions in Iraq.”
In Late December, Iraqi Parliamentary Security and Defense Commission MP disclosed that a US plane supplied the ISIS terrorist organization with arms and ammunition in Salahuddin province.
“The US and the so-called anti-ISIL coalition claim that they have launched a campaign against this terrorist and criminal group – while supplying them with weapons, food and medicine in Jalawla region (a town in Diyala Governorate, Iraq). This explicitly displays the falsity of the coalition’s and the US’ claims,” Deputy Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Brigadier General Massoud Jazayeri said.

ISIS militants launched a full-scale offensive on the villages of Ayyash and Bgelia after the US-led ‘anti-ISIS’ coalition’s airstrikes against the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in this area. On Sunday, the US-led ‘anti-ISIS’ coalition pounded the Syrian Arab Army’s positions in the province of Deir Ezzor. 1 soldier was killed and half dozen others were wounded. According to the reports, the military camp belongs to the SAA’s 137th Artillery Brigade in the village of ‘Ayyash was a main target of the US warplanes.
The Kuwaiti al-Rai news website quoted an informed diplomat as saying that the US is attempting to gather the forces called by Washington as 'moderate opposition' in one region to create a foothold for the militants’ further expansion in Syria.
According to the report, US-supported militants have entered Southwestern Syria which shares borders with Jordan. The reports were rejected by Amman.

Alaska to measure concentrations of radiocesium in wild-caught food…
[O]ther investigators have detected Fukushima-derived
radionuclides in a variety of marine products harvested off the western
coast of North America.
We tested… 54 northern fur seal… when
composited, northern fur seal tissues tested positive for trace
quantities of [Cesium-134 adn Cesium-137].
Radiocesium was detected at
an activity concentration of 37.2 mBq 134Cs kg [fresh weight, not dried]
and 141.2 mBq 137Cs kg… indicating that this population of seals has been exposed to ... Fukushima-derived radiocesium.

The ongoing Alaska 2011 Northern Pinnipeds UME investigation continues to explore a mix of potential etiologies (infectious, endocrine, toxins, nutritious etc.), including radioactivity. Currently, the underlying etiology remains undetermined [i.e. scientists don’t yet know what caused the seals’ sickness, but they think it might have been Fukushima radiation].
We present results on gamma analysis (cesium 134 and 137) of muscle tissue from control and diseased seals, and discuss wildlife health implications from different possible routes of exposure to Fukushima fallout to ice seals.
Since the Fukushima fallout period occurred during the annual sea ice cover period from Nome to Barrow, a sea ice based fallout scenario in addition to a marine food web based one is of particular relevance for the Fukushima accident.
Under a proposed sea ice fallout deposition scenario, radionuclides would have been settled onto sea ice. Sea ice and snow would have acted as a temporary refuge for deposited radionuclides; thus radionuclides would have only become available for migration during the melting season and would not have entered the regional food web in any appreciable manner until breakup (pulsed release).
The cumulative on-ice exposure for ice seals would have occurred through external, inhalation, and non-equilibrium dietary pathways during the ice-based seasonal spring haulout period for molting/pupping/breeding activities. Additionally, ice seals would have been under dietary/metabolic constraints and experiencing hormonal changes associated with reproduction and molting.
Reproductive system: adnexal cysts [uterus], uterine and
penile melanosis [darkening of skin], cliteromegaly [enlarged clitoris],
cryptorchism [testicle(s) absent from scrotum], retained
placenta; • Endocrine system: thyroid cysts, adrenal
nodules;
• Musculoskeletal
system: synovial cyst [fluid-filled sacs in spine due to
degeneration]; • Integumentary system:
panniculitis [inflammation of fatty tissue], epidermal molt, skin

ONE ARTICLE TEASED: Radiation levels have been quite low in every study conducted to date. BUT, NO, NO ACTUAL PRINTOUTS OF RESULTS. However, the levels detected in the sample were so low thateven if someone were to swim for six hours a day, every day of the year in water containing twice as much cesium, the radiation received would still be 1,000 times less than what they would receive from a single dental X-ray."

IT DID NOT, I REPEAT, DID NOT APPEAR IN THE ENVIRONMENT FROM PREVIOUS NUCLEAR TESTING, OR FROM NUCLEAR BOMBS DROPPED ON JAPAN.

THAT THE WOODS HOLE BOYS FOUND "TRACE AMOUNTS" OVER 4 YEARS AFTER THE INITIAL DISASTER IS VERY IMPORTANT.

This is a school 50 kilometers northeast of Tokyo, in a city called Moriya. A local citizens' group recently carried out examinations on 85 children under the age of 18 and found out that 58 of them, or 70 percent had radioactive cesium in their urine samples.
The kind of cesium detected is a fission product formed in nuclear power plants. Members of the group say there's a high chance the cesium entered the children's bodies after eating food contaminated with radioactive material.

Abstract
The devastating tsunami triggered by the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011 inundated the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) resulting in a loss of cooling and a series of explosions releasing the largest quantity of radioactive material into the atmosphere since the Chernobyl nuclear accident. Although 80% of the radionuclides from this accidental release were transported over the Pacific Ocean, 20% were deposited over Japanese coastal catchments that are subject to frequent typhoons. Among the radioisotopes released during the FDNPP accident, radiocesium (134Cs and137Cs) is considered the most serious current and future health risk for the local population.
The goal of this review is to synthesize research relevant to the transfer of FDNPP derived radiocesium from hillslopes to the Pacific Ocean. After radiocesium fallout deposition on vegetation and soils, the contamination may remain stored in forest canopies, in vegetative litter on the ground, or in the soil.
Once radiocesium contacts soil, it is quickly and almost irreversibly bound to fine soil particles. The kinetic energy of raindrops instigates the displacement of soil particles, and their bound radiocesium, which may be mobilized and transported with overland flow.
Soil erosion is one of the main processes transferring particle-bound radiocesium from hillslopes through rivers and streams, and ultimately to the Pacific Ocean.
Accordingly this review will summarize results regarding the fundamental processes and dynamics that govern radiocesium transfer from hillslopes to the Pacific Ocean published in the literature within the first four years after the FDNPP accident. The majority of radiocesium is reported to be transported in the particulate fraction, attached to fine particles.
Cesium-137 levels recorded off the coast of Japan in the Pacific Ocean WERE (PRIOR TO 3/11) among the planets lowest, measuring around 2 becquerels per cubic meter (1 becquerel/Bq equals one radioactive decay event per second) but are now reading at 60 million becquerels per cubic meter. This is said to be high enough to cause reproductive and health effects in marine animals."
New Zealanders warned about seafood, but not Americans?
"New Zealanders who eat a lot of seafood may be exposing themselves to radiation and putting their health at risk, a study suggests.
Researchers found seafood such as mussels, paua and oysters contained concentrated levels of radiation.
Those at particular risk were sub-populations for whom fish consumption was culturally important and those relying of fishing and shellfish collection to feed their families, the study’s authors said in an article released on Friday.
“Seafood has importance to the New Zealand population as a source of nutrition consumed in considerable amounts by some sectors of the community,” they said.
“Chemical contaminants in seafood can therefore lead to significant health burdens to the population and it is an important public health function to identify the contaminants of concern and characterise their exposure.”
Researchers measured levels of radioactive caesium and polonium in 36 kinds of seafood.
Levels of caesium were of minimal dietary concern, but levels of polonium could “contribute significantly to the dietary dose of ionising radiation for high seafood consumers, although the magnitude varies considerably depending on the composition of seafood species consumed,” the researchers said.
Radiation levels were higher in seafood than other foods, they said.
The study by Andrew Pearson, Sally Gaw, Nikolaus Hermanspahn and Chris Glover was published in the Journal of Environmental Radioactivity earlier this year.

The Great Pacific Gyre
The network of currents comprise a larger hydrodynamic system known as North Pacific Gyre. Flotsam and jetsam from northeast Japan are moved along this path:
- The Liman or Oyashio (Parent Stream), a mineral-rich cold Arctic current that moves southwest from the Bering Strait past Kamchatka Peninsula and along Japan's northeast region of Tohoku. The water used to cool the Fukushima meltdown is dumped into the passing Liman, which carries the radioactive wastewater southward toward Choshi Point, east of Tokyo..
- The rocky outcrop at Choshi forces the Liman to swerve eastward, where it collides with the tropical Kuroshio Current moving northward. The interaction of these opposing currents is complicated.
The cold Liman is forced underneath the warm Black Tide, which explains why rockfish, abalone, sea urchins and other bottom dwellers have high readings of radioactivity.
An analysis lab in Fukushima has reported 15,000 becquerels per kg, or six times the legally allowable content. (The studies, like all in Japan, use the controversial method of taking average readings from entire samples, instead of measuring hot spots that can be 5 times higher.)
- Along the boundaries of the two currents, gigantic eddies are spun off. The mixing of nutrient-rich cold water with the warm current spurs the genesis of marine life, spawning algae and the larvae of fish and invertebrates. The waters off eastern Japan form the world's richest fishery.
Of special importance in the food chain are squid, cuttlefish and others in the cephalopod family, which comprise the basic source of protein for fish.
- The merged Liman and Kuroshio become the North Pacific Current, pushing eastward to North America. Large predatory species, including tuna and salmon, feed here on the contaminated squid and on small fishes like herring and mackerel.
- When the North Pacific Current hits the continental shelf, it divides. One stream veers northward along the Canadian and Alaskan coast, and then swings counterclockwise toward the Bering Strait and Kamchatka Peninsula. These areas are the breeding grounds of seals, walruses, whales and sea otters. The region is also a major supplier of salmon and sea cucumbers for the Asian markets.
- The other stream turns clockwise to the south, becoming the California Current, the breeding waters of sea lions, pelicans and humpback whales. That southern stream eventually splits into two new currents: the Equatorial Pacific, which moves from Mexico to the Philippines, where it rejoins the Kuroshio; and the Peruvian, heading southward along the coast of South America and then westward into the South Pacific.
- The distance between northeast Japan and the Pacific Northwest is about 8,000 kilometers.
The Kuroshio-North Pacific Current normally makes the passage in about six to seven months. Heavier materials, such as timber, will move at about half that pace, but chemicals dissolved in the water have already started to reach the Pacific seaboard of North America, a reality being ignored by the U.S. and Canadian governments.
It is all-too easy for governments to downplay the threat.
Radiation levels are difficult to detect in water, with readings often measuring 1/20th of the actual content.
Yet the fact remains that radioactive isotopes, including cesium, strontium, cobalt and plutonium, are present in sea water on a scale at least five times greater than the fallout over land in Japan.
According to a recent estimate by the France-based Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety, radioactive sea-dumping from Fukushima is 30 times the amount stated by the Tokyo Electric Power Company.
The total amount leaked into the sea is closer to 27 quadrillion becquerels.
A quadrillion is 1,000 trillion.
That does not include airborne isotopes that have fallen into the Pacific.
Unlike those stories about arsenic, a tiny dose every day of cesium will not make one immune from its toxic effect.
Mega-scale fluid dynamics show that the Fukushima nuclear disaster will soon contaminate most of the vital fisheries of the Pacific, which comprises half of the world's sea surface.
Over the 30-year half-life of cesium, radioactive isotopes will be recycled a dozen times or more. NATURALLY, IN TIME, EVERYTHING will move into the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
However, it is simply NOT TRUE that radiation from Fukushima was never detected in Alaska [PRIOR TO THE WOODS HOLE REPORT EARLIER THIS YEAR] , as evident from testimony made by Lisa Jackson, former EPA Administrator:

The largest amounts were found in samples from Alaska on March 19 and 24, 2011, but all of the radiation levels detected during the detailed filter analysis are hundreds of times below levels of concern.
Although Lisa Jackson promised that the levels would pose no risks, her account does not incorporate ramifications of four years of ongoing ocean contamination coupled with processes of bioaccumulation that concentrate the low levels of radionuclides found in water and soil at higher levels in flora and fauna.
Radiation contamination was detected in Alaskan life in 2011.
