He estimates that strontium 90 may be entering the Pacific at a similar rate. "

Canadian authorities are finding extremely high levels of nuclear radiation in certain fish samples…Some fish samples tested to date have had very high levels of radiation: one sea bass sample collected in July, for example, had 1,000 becquerels per kilogram of cesium.

U.N. ASTEROID DEFENSE SYSTEM. NEAR-EARTH ASTEROIDS.

THE UNITED NATIONS IS BEGINNING STEPS TO MOUNT AN ASTEROID DEFLECTION SYSTEM. 
FOR MANY YEARS WE HAVE BEEN WELL AWARE OF THE POSSIBILITY OF A CATACLYSMIC ASTEROID STRIKE ON EARTH. THE ASTEROID THAT DAMAGED RUSSIA WAS SMALL IN COMPARISON TO SOME OF THE MORE THAN 10,000 KNOWN NEAR-EARTH OBJECTS (NEOs) THAT HAVE CLOSE APPROACH, AND ARE OVER .6 OF A MILE WIDE. 
One of the most dangerous asteroids on record zipped close by Earth last month.  
2013 TV135 was discovered on October 8, while NASA was closed during the government shutdown.
IT GOT THAT CLOSE BEFORE ANYONE DISCOVERED IT!

WE HAD A MUCH CLOSER BRUSH WITH AN ASTEROID THIS YEAR, ANOTHER ONE NOT DISCOVERED UNTIL IT WOULD HAVE BEEN TOO LATE FOR DEFLECTION.

That pales by comparison to the closest shave the Earth got from an asteroid of considerable size in recorded history.

On February 15 this year, asteroid 2012 DA14, which measured 150 feet wide, slipped in below the moon's orbit and squeaked by our planet just 17,200 miles from its surface. [THERE ARE VERY GOOD VIDEOS OF THIS ON THAT 2nd LINKED SITE.]

Scientists spotted it only ONE YEAR AGO from an observatory in the south of Spain.
An asteroid this size passes this close to Earth only every 40 years and collides with it only once every 1,200 years.

U.N. AGREES TO TAKE MEASURES TO PROTECT EARTH
The U.N. General Assembly last week gave the green light to an asteroid defense plan drawn up by the former astronauts at the Association of Space Explorers (ASE) , Scientific American reports.
The plan calls for member nations to join forces in an "International Asteroid Warning Group" committed to sounding the alarm if a dangerous rock is spotted.
A spacecraft would then be launched to knock the asteroid off course.
The ASE also wants the U.N. to run a practice deflection mission, to make sure the method actually works. 

Right now, no nation has an explicit responsibility to defend against an asteroid, and one former astronaut explained why the task should fall to the U.N., reports Space.com: "If something goes wrong in the middle of the deflection, you have now caused havoc in some other nation that was not at risk. Therefore, this decision of what to do, how to do it, and what systems to use have to be coordinated internationally." 

ANY INCOMING ASTEROID WOULD HAVE TO BE DEFLECTED 5 YEARS BEFORE IMPACT.
Further, early detection is essential, because the deflecting spacecraft will likely have to hit the rock five years before its rendezvous with Earth in order to be successful.

"If we don't find it until a year out, make yourself a nice cocktail and go out and watch," one former astronaut says.

How Many Near-Earth Objects Have Been Discovered So Far?

As of October 25, 2013, 10,359 Near-Earth objects have been discovered. Some 862 of these NEOs are asteroids with a diameter of approximately 1 kilometer or larger. Also, 1,431 of these NEOs have been classified as Potentially Hazardous Asteroids (PHAs).

What Is A Potentially Hazardous Asteroid (PHA)?
Potentially Hazardous Asteroids (PHAs) are currently defined based on parameters that measure the asteroid's potential to make threatening close approaches to the Earth. Specifically, all asteroids with a minimum orbit intersection distance (MOID) of 0.05 AU or less and an absolute magnitude (H) of 22.0 or less are considered PHAs. 
Particles from space bombard our planet every minute -- at a rate of 100 tons a day, NASA says.  

TWO ASTEROIDS HAVE RECENTLY BEEN SPOTLIGHTED AS HAVING THE BEST CHANCES OF IMPACTING EARTH.
2013 TV135 
If it struck the earth, the impact from 2013 TV135 would cause damage to an area of approximately 100,000 square miles with an equivalent force to about 2,500 megatons of TNT, or 2,500 standard nuclear warhead-bearing US Minute Man II missiles.

It had a 1 in 500 chance of impacting the Earth on 5 February 2040. In September 2013, there was an opportunity to make additional observations of 2011 AG5 when it came within 0.98 AU (147,000,000 km; 91,000,000 mi) of Earth. The 2013 observations allowed a further refinement to the known trajectory. The asteroid will also pass 0.0121 AU (1,810,000 km; 1,120,000 miles) from the Earth on 3 February 2023  ^[7][10


THE LARGEST ASTEROIDS WE KNOW OF
THERE ARE MANY  WITH INCREDIBLE MASS, BUT WE CONCENTRATE ON NEAR-EARTH LARGE ASTEROIDS.

1~ 1036 GANYMEDAt about 21 MILES ACROSS  (32–34 km in diameter), it was discovered by Walter Baade on October 23, 1924. It has a very well determined orbit, and its next pass of the Earth will be at a distance of 0.374097 AU (55,964,100 km; 34,774,500 mi) on 13 October 2024. It is an Amor asteroid, and also a Mars-crosser asteroid, and will pass 0.02868 AU (4,290,000 km; 2,666,000 mi) from Mars on 16 December 2176.^[7]  

2~ 433 EROS
433 Eros is an S-type near-Earth asteroid approximately 34.4 × 11.2 × 11.2 kilometres (21.4 × 7.0 × 7.0 MILES) in size, the second-largest near-Earth asteroid after 1036 Ganymed. It was discovered in 1898 and was the first near-Earth asteroid discovered. It was the first asteroid to be orbited by a probe (in 2000). It belongs to the Amor group.
Eros is a Mars-crosser asteroid, the first known to come within the orbit of Mars.
3~ 4179 Toutatis
On December 12, 2012 at 06:40 UT Toutatis passed within about 18 lunar distances of Earth.
Toutatis will approach Earth in 2016, but will not make a notably close approach until 2069.
HOWEVER, TOUTATIS HAS A VERY CHAOTIC ORBIT.
Radar imagery shows that Toutatis is a highly irregular body consisting of two distinct "lobes", with maximum widths of about 4.6 km and 2.4 km respectively, about 3 x 1.5 miles.

4~ MINOR PLANET/ASTEROID 7482 (1994 PC1)
Asteroid 7482 (1994 PC1) makes closest approach TO EARTH at 0.013 au 18 January 2022, coming within bout 5.2 times distance to the moon. It measures roughly 1900 meters or 1.2 miles wide.

Vesta is the brightest asteroid visible from Earth.
Vesta is the second-most-massive body in the asteroid belt, though only 28% as massive as Ceres.
Measures   342 x  287 MILES (550 km × 462 km).
NASA's Dawn spacecraft entered orbit around Vesta on 16 July 2011 for a one-year exploration, and what is known about Vesta will be refined and extended as data from Dawn is analyzed and published. Dawn left Vestan orbit on 5 September 2012 heading for asteroid Ceres.

Distant catastrophe

Though it seems Earth is safe for now, there is such a thing as a doomsday asteroid.

Scientists say it is likely that the impact of an asteroid over six miles wide wiped out dinosaurs along with much of the life on Earth 65 million years ago.

More like it will come, NASA says.

But they only turn up once every "few million years."

That may give humanity some time to find a way of dealing with it.  
If the nations of earth CAN come together to build an asteroid deflection program, we will still need more intense and far better discovery capability and methods of tracking asteroids within that 5-year deadline for our awareness of their near presence to do us any good.

We MUST find them before they cross that "5-year limit" and be able to launch a deflection immediately. 
BUT, BEFORE ALL THAT, WE MUST DETERMINE IF THIS IS EVEN POSSIBLE.

"Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's government has agreed on draft legislation on the issue on Friday, November 1, and expects the parliament to vote on it during the current session, which ends on December 6.
With a comfortable majority in both chambers, the ruling coalition bloc would see no problems overcoming the opposition. Critics say the new law would give the executive too much power to conceal information from the public and compromise the freedom of the press.
Currently only issues of defense can be designated state secret in Japan, and non-military leakers face a jail term of up to one year. Defense officials may be sentenced to five years for exposing secrets, or 10 years, if the classified information they leaded came from the US military.
The new law would enact harsher punishment to leakers, but more importantly, it would allow government branches other than defense ministry designate information as state secrets. The bill names four categories of ‘special secrets’, which would be covered by protection – defense, diplomacy, counter-terrorism and counter-espionage.
Under the new legislation a ministry may classify information for a five-year term with a possibility of prolongation to up to 30 years. After that a cabinet ruling would be needed for the secret to be treated as such, but there is no limit for how long information may be kept under a lid.
"Basically, this bill raises the possibility that the kind of information about which the public should be informed is kept secret eternally," Tadaaki Muto, a lawyer and member of a task force on the bill at the Japan Federation of Bar Associations, told Reuters.
"Under the bill, the administrative branch can set the range of information that is kept secret at its own discretion."
Critics of the state secrets bill say it would undermine media’s ability to act as the public’s eye on the actions of the government and whoever it would choose to shield.
"It seems very clear that the law would have a chilling effect on journalism in Japan," said Lawrence Repeta, a law professor at Meiji University.
Japanese law has no clear definition of what kind of new gathering could be deemed ‘grossly inappropriate’. The bill introduces a jail sentence of up to five years for non-officials, including media professionals, using such methods to obtain information. But it does not clearly state that if a journalist reporting on a state secret is found to have obtained the information legitimately, he or she would not be punished. This has led critics to dismiss the ‘freedom of press’ provisions as political window dressing.
Despite criticisms, the Japanese cabinet insists that the law be adopted promptly. It is needed to the planned establishment of a national security council, which would involve members from different ministries and agencies. The law would protect information exchanged through the new body from being leaked, the government says."

Abe's party has sought unsuccessfully to enact a harsher law on state secrets in the past.
Japan had harsh state secret legislations before and during World War II, so in the post-war period government secrecy has been viewed with suspicion, along with militaristic traditions and other things associated with the Imperial past."

This could literally re-ignite the nuclear accident in the open atmosphere and inflame it into hemispheric proportions.”
JAPAN TIME REPORTED, "Removing the fuel rods is a task usually assisted by computers that know their exact location down to the nearest millimeter. Working virtually blind in a highly radioactive environment, there is a risk the crane could drop or damage one of the rods — an accident that would heap even more misery onto the Tohoku region.Under normal circumstances, such an operation would take a little more than three months."
TEPCO HAS SAID IT CAN DO THIS IN DAYS!

NUCLEAR NEWS STATED, "An operation with potentially “apocalyptic” consequences is expected to begin in a little over two weeks from now – “as early as November 8″ – at Fukushima’s damaged and sinking Reactor 4, when plant operator TEPCO will attempt to remove over 1300 spent fuel rods holding the radiation equivalent of 14,000 Hiroshima bombs from a spent fuel storage tank perched on the reactor’s upper floor. If the job is botched, radiation releases could force the evacuation of all humans from the site, and could cause electronic equipment to fail.  Humankind would be forced to stand helplessly by as billions of curies of deadly radiation pour into the air and the ocean."

At Fukushima, used nuclear fuel rods are stored in pools and, especially at reactor 4, some of these pools are damaged and at risk of completely breaking open in the event of another earthquake. If one of the pools were to collapse or catch fire, then the impacts would affect the world.
Tepco could be responsible for unleashing this devastation on the world as starting in November they have decided to begin an operation to remove 400 tonnes of fuel rod assemblies, on their own. A workforce of thousands is preparing to work on the fuel rod pools at the instable reactor 4 in order to relocate them to a safer location.
Toshio Kimura, a former technician at Tepco, said that “Previously it was a computer-controlled process that memorized the exact locations of the rods down to the millimeter and now they don’t have that. It has to be done manually so there is a high risk that they will drop and break one of the fuel rods.”

ANTIBIOTICS FAIL : SUPER-BACTERIA, NO CURE

ATLANTA, Oct. 27, 2013 (UPI) -- The world is running out of antibiotics to treat formerly treatable infections, due to overuse, a U.S. expert says.

Dr. Arjun Srinivasan, associate director at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said in an interview with "Frontline" on PBS : "The more you use an antibiotic, the more you expose a bacteria to an antibiotic, the greater the likelihood that resistance to that antibiotic is going to develop," Srinivasan said. "So the more antibiotics we put into people, we put into the environment, we put into livestock, the more opportunities we create for these bacteria to become resistant.
For a long time, there have been newspaper stories and magazine articles that asked 'The end of antibiotics?'" he said. "Well, now I would say you can change the title to 'The end of antibiotics, period.'"

The world is entering an antibiotic crisis in which routine injuries such as a skinned knee could potentially be fatal, according to the World Health Organization (WHO.) Dr. Margaret Chan, director general of the WHO, has warned that bacteria carried by humans are starting to become so resistant to common antibiotics that every antibiotic ever developed, including drugs used to treat tuberculosis and malaria, is at risk of becoming useless.
As a result, Chan claimed, day-to-day treatments may become impossible, which could bring about “the end of modern medicine as we know it.”

Continuing with Chan's statements on this, CBS reported:
Speaking at a conference in Copenhagen, Chan said antibiotic resistance could bring about “the end of modern medicine as we know it.”
 “We are losing our first-line antimicrobials,” she said Wednesday in her keynote address at the conference on combating antimicrobial resistance. “Replacement treatments are more costly, more toxic, need much longer durations of treatment, and may require treatment in intensive care units.” 
Chan said hospitals have become “hotbeds for highly-resistant pathogens” like methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, “increasing the risk that hospitalization kills instead of cures.”
Indeed, diseases that were once curable, such as tuberculosis, are becoming harder and more expensive to treat.
Chan said treatment of  multi-drug resistant tuberculosis was “extremely complicated, typically requiring two years of medication with toxic and expensive medicines, some of which are in constant short supply. Even with the best of care, only slightly more than 50 percent of these patients will be cured.” 
Antibiotic-resistant strains of salmonella, E. coli, and gonorrhea have also been discovered.
This will be a post-antibiotic era. In terms of new replacement antibiotics, the pipeline is virtually dry,” said Chan. “A post-antibiotic era means, in effect, an end to modern medicine as we know it. Things as common as strep throat or a child’s scratched knee could once again kill.” The dearth of effective antibiotics could also make surgical procedures and certain cancer treatments risky or even impossible, Chan said.  
The development of new antibiotics now could help stave off catastrophe later. But few drug makers are willing to invest in drugs designed for short term use.
“It’s simply not profitable for them,” said Dr. William Schaffner, chairman of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. “If you create a new drug to reduce cholesterol, people will be taking that drug every day for the rest of their lives. But you only take antibiotics for a week or maybe 10 days.”

Antibiotic resistance: delaying the inevitable

The golden age of antibiotics proved to be a short-lived one. During the past few decades, many strains of bacteria have evolved resistance to antibiotics.
Doctors miss the "good old days," when the antibiotics they prescribed consistently cured their patients.

And it's going to get nasty.   The era of antibiotics is coming to a close. In just a couple of generations, what once appeared to be miracle medicines have been beaten into ineffectiveness by the bacteria they were designed to knock out. Once, scientists hailed the end of infectious diseases. Now, the post-antibiotic apocalypse is within sight.
Hyperbole? Unfortunately not. The highly serious journal Lancet Infectious Diseases yesterday posed the question itself over a paper revealing the rapid spread of multi-drug-resistant bacteria. "Is this the end of antibiotics?" it asked.

Doctors and scientists have not been complacent, but the paper by Professor Tim Walsh and colleagues takes the anxiety to a new level. Last September, Walsh published details of a gene he had discovered, called NDM 1, which passes easily between types of bacteria called enterobacteriaceae such as E. coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae and makes them resistant to almost all of the powerful, last-line group of antibiotics called carbapenems. Yesterday's paper revealed that NDM 1 is widespread in India and has arrived here as a result of global travel and medical tourism for, among other things, transplants, pregnancy care and cosmetic surgery.
"In many ways, this is it," Walsh tells me. "This is potentially the end. There are no antibiotics in the pipeline that have activity against NDM 1-producing enterobacteriaceae. We have a bleak window of maybe 10 years, where we are going to have to use the antibiotics we have very wisely, but also grapple with the reality that we have nothing to treat these infections with."
And this is the optimistic view – based on the assumption that drug companies can and will get moving on discovering new antibiotics to throw at the bacterial enemy. Since the 1990s, when pharma found itself twisting and turning down blind alleys, it has not shown a great deal of enthusiasm for difficult antibiotic research. And besides, because, unlike with heart medicines, people take the drugs for a week rather than life, and because resistance means the drugs become useless after a while, there is just not much money in it.

Studies have shown, he says, that the chances of dying from hospital pneumonia or septicaemia (blood poisoning) are twice as high if the bacteria are drug-resistant, rising in the case of pneumonia from 20-30% to 40-60%."Frankly, pharmaceutical companies as well as governments and the European Commission need to really get their act together," says Walsh, who has been urging co-ordinated efforts across the world to put in place good surveillance systems to find out what resistance is developing and where, and then look for interventions. He had Columbia, Mexico, Thailand and India all willingly on board for one surveillance scheme, but the European Commission would not fund it. "What we need is for somebody to give us something like €3m [£2.5m] a year. It's not a lot of money."
The fact is that many people have still got their heads in the sand. But soon we will start seeing patients in NHS hospitals whose infections won't clear up. In the battle for survival of the fittest between human beings and bacteria, just now it looks as though the best we are going to get is a draw – if we are lucky.

Exactly 10 years before, when Newcastle yachtsman Ivan Macfadyen had sailed exactly the same course from Melbourne to Osaka, all he'd had to do to catch a fish from the ocean between Brisbane and Japan was throw out a baited line.
"There was not one of the 28 days on that portion of the trip when we didn't catch a good-sized fish to cook up and eat with some rice," Macfadyen recalled.
But this time, on that whole long leg of sea journey, the total catch was two.
No fish. No birds. Hardly a sign of life at all.
"In years gone by I'd gotten used to all the birds and their noises," he said.
"They'd be following the boat, sometimes resting on the mast before taking off again. You'd see flocks of them wheeling over the surface of the sea in the distance, feeding on pilchards."

But in March and April this year, only silence and desolation surrounded his boat, Funnel Web, as it sped across the surface of a haunted ocean.No wonder the sea was dead. No wonder his baited lines caught nothing. There was nothing to catch.
If that sounds depressing, it only got worse.
The next leg of the long voyage was from Osaka to San Francisco and for most of that trip the desolation was tinged with nauseous horror and a degree of fear.
"After we left Japan, it felt as if the ocean itself was dead," Macfadyen said.
"We hardly saw any living things. We saw one whale, sort of rolling helplessly on the surface with what looked like a big tumour on its head. It was pretty sickening.
"I've done a lot of miles on the ocean in my life and I'm used to seeing turtles, dolphins, sharks and big flurries of feeding birds. But this time, for 3000 nautical miles there was nothing alive to be seen."
In place of the missing life was garbage in astounding volumes.
"Part of it was the aftermath of the tsunami that hit Japan a couple of years ago. The wave came in over the land, picked up an unbelievable load of stuff and carried it out to sea. And it's still out there, everywhere you look."

Ivan's brother, Glenn, who boarded at Hawaii for the run into the United States, marvelled at the "thousands on thousands" of yellow plastic buoys. The huge tangles of synthetic rope, fishing lines and nets. Pieces of polystyrene foam by the million. And slicks of oil and petrol, everywhere.
Countless hundreds of wooden power poles are out there, snapped off by the killer wave and still trailing their wires in the middle of the sea.
"In years gone by, when you were becalmed by lack of wind, you'd just start your engine and motor on," Ivan said.
Not this time.
"In a lot of places we couldn't start our motor for fear of entangling the propeller in the mass of pieces of rope and cable. That's an unheard of situation, out in the ocean.
"If we did decide to motor we couldn't do it at night, only in the daytime with a lookout on the bow, watching for rubbish.
"On the bow, in the waters above Hawaii, you could see right down into the depths. I could see that the debris isn't just on the surface, it's all the way down. And it's all sizes, from a soft-drink bottle to pieces the size of a big car or truck.
"We saw a factory chimney sticking out of the water, with some kind of boiler thing still attached below the surface. We saw a big container-type thing, just rolling over and over on the waves.
"We were weaving around these pieces of debris. It was like sailing through a garbage tip.
"Below decks you were constantly hearing things hitting against the hull, and you were constantly afraid of hitting something really big. As it was, the hull was scratched and dented all over the place from bits and pieces we never saw."
Plastic was ubiquitous. Bottles, bags and every kind of throwaway domestic item you can imagine, from broken chairs to dustpans, toys and utensils.
And something else. The boat's vivid yellow paint job, never faded by sun or sea in years gone past, reacted with something in the water off Japan, losing its sheen in a strange and unprecedented way.
BACK in Newcastle, Ivan Macfadyen is still coming to terms with the shock and horror of the voyage.
"The ocean is broken," he said, shaking his head in stunned disbelief.
Recognising the problem is vast, and that no organisations or governments appear to have a particular interest in doing anything about it, Macfadyen is looking for ideas.
He plans to lobby government ministers, hoping they might help.
More immediately, he will approach the organisers of Australia's major ocean races, trying to enlist yachties into an international scheme that uses volunteer yachtsmen to monitor debris and marine life.
Macfadyen signed up to this scheme while he was in the US, responding to an approach by US academics who asked yachties to fill in daily survey forms and collect samples for radiation testing - a significant concern in the wake of the tsunami and consequent nuclear power station failure in Japan.
"I asked them why don't we push for a fleet to go and clean up the mess," he said.
"But they said they'd calculated that the environmental damage from burning the fuel to do that job would be worse than just leaving the debris there."

The process involves moving around 400 tonnes of irradiated spent fuel from reactor 4, one of the four reactors damaged in the 2011 disaster. While the other three reactors went into meltdown and are still being cooled with water after other systems failed, the fourth was not operational at the time. However, it still has spent fuel in it which needs to be removed from the now highly unstable structure in case of any kind of earthquake hitting the plant again. 
Tepco said its plans are to begin removing this debris within eight years - aiming for complete decommissioning within 40 years.

With the federal government shut down and the economy hurtling toward the debt limit deadline of Oct. 17, the architects of the Republican Party's shutdown strategy are getting ready for a plush four-day fundraiser at what Golf Digest once called the number one golf resort in America.
Yes, with Washington in chaos, Heritage Foundation President Jim DeMint is scheduled to attend a major fundraiser for Heritage Action for America, the lobbying arm of DeMint's insurrectionist empire, at Oregon's Bandon Dunes Golf Resort. Heritage Action confirmed to HuffPost that the fundraiser is still on.
The invitation for the fundraiser has apparently been taken off Heritage's website, but could still be found through the website cache.

Unfortunately for three previously announced attendees, Reps. Jeff Duncan (R-S.C.), Mick Mulvaney (R-S.C.) and Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.), the debacle left in the wake of Heritage's defund-Obamacare campaign beckons. Spokespeople for the three congressmen confirmed to HuffPost that they will not be attending.
While they remain in Washington to deal with the small problems of getting 800,000 furloughed federal workers back on the job and making sure  that payments from WIC and other aid programs go out to families in need, DeMint and the other attendees at the Heritage event will be relaxing with rounds of golf, an oyster and wine-tasting reception and an after-dinner gathering with scotch and cigars.
Corporate sponsorships for the Bandon Dunes fundraiser range from $5,000 to put the company logo on the boxed lunches to $10,000 to sponsor the scotch-and-cigars event.
But if a corporation really wants to praise Heritage's work leading the charge to shutter the federal government, it could donate $75,000 and gain admittance for four along with the company name on one of the four courses played during the fundraiser and the company logo displayed on caddie bibs, scorecards, golf balls and the first tee box.
