The clock is ticking. The hand of global nuclear disaster is painfully close to midnight.  

Even the tiniest mistake during this operation to extract over 1,300 fuel rods at the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan could lead to a series of cascading failures with an apocalyptic outcome. The process of removing each rod will have to be repeated over 1,300 times without incident. The operation to begin removing fuel from such a severely damaged pool has never been attempted before. The rods are unwieldy and very heavy, each one weighing two-thirds of a ton. But it has to be done, unless there is some way to encase the entire building in concrete with the pool as it is. Renowned theoretical physicist Michio Kaku stated in an interview a few weeks after the initial accident that “TEPCO is literally hanging on by their fingernails.” They still are, and always have been.

Michael Friedlander, a nuclear engineer and former U.S. power plant operator, told CNN in September that, "The thing that keeps me up late at night is that they’re getting ready to unload the spent fuel in unit 4. It has the potential if it doesn’t go well to create a very, very serious accident. Beyond the emergency response, TEPCO has demonstrated no long-term vision for dealing with the problem."

Arjun Makhijani, President of the US-based Institute for Energy and Environmental Research: [He] remained concerned about the positioning of the fuel rods in the pool after the initial tsunami and subsequent hydrogen explosions at the plant, and said he hoped the plan was based on more than just Tepco’s assessment.  “I hope that there has been some level of independent scrutiny on the transfer operation, and on the way the spent fuel is sitting in the pool currently,” he told a Berkeley California radio station. “But the lack of independent outside advisors is very troubling.”

"We are extremely lucky that this apocalyptic scenario hasn't happened yet, considering the state of Reactor 4. But for many, it is already too late. The initial explosions and spent fuel pool fires may have already sealed the fate of millions of people. Time will tell. Anyone who tells you otherwise is not being honest, because there is just no way to know. "

Hiroaki Koide, a nuclear scientist working at the University of Kyoto: [H]e was very worried about an accident, given the magnitude of the task. “I’m worried about whether Tepco can treat all the 1,331 [spent-fuel] assemblies without any problem and how long it will take,” he said.

Thomas Cochran, Natural Resource Defense Council’s nuclear program senior scientist stated that a dropped fuel assembly was unlikely to cause wide spread contamination.

 If a fuel rod is dropped, breaks or becomes entangled while being removed, possible worst case scenarios include a big explosion, a meltdown in the pool, a large fire. This is literally a matter of national security – another mistake by TEPCO could have incredibly costly, even fatal, consequences for Japan. 

Richard Tanter, expert on nuclear power issues and professor of international relations at the University of Melbourne:" Well, the first one, and the most immediate one, is the news that the Reactor Unit 4, the one which has a very large amount of stored fuel in its fuel storage pool, that is sinking. According to former prime Minister Kan Naoto, that has sunk some 31 inches in places and it’s not uneven. This is really not surprising given what’s happened in terms of pumping of water, the aftermath of the earthquake and the tsunami, the continuing infusions of water into the groundwater area. This is an immediate problem, and if it is not resolved there is an extraordinary possibility we really could be back at March 2011 again because of the possibility of a fission accident in that spent fuel pond in Unit No. 4."

At any time, following any of these possible events, or even all by itself, nuclear fuel in reactor 4's pool could become critical, mostly because it will heat up the pool to a point where water will burn off and the zirconium cladding will catch fire when it is exposed to air.
Once the integrity of the pool is compromised that will likely lead to more criticalities, which then can spread to other fuel. The heat from this reaction would weaken the structure further, which could then collapse and the contents of the pool end up in a pile of rubble on the ground. This would release an enormous amount of radioactivity, which Arnie Gundersen has referred to as a “Gamma Shine Event” without precedence, and Dr. Christopher Busby has deemed an “Open-air super reactor spectacular.”

SO, WE WAIT, HOLD OUR BREATHS, AND MANY ARE PRAYING...
THIS AFFECTS THE ENTIRE PLANET....YOU, ME, ALL OF US.

EVEN IF THIS IS SUCCESSFUL, WHICH NO ONE EXPECTS WILL BE THE CASE, FUKUSHIMA WILL CONTINUE CONTAMINATING OUR WORLD FOR THE NEXT SEVERAL CENTURIES.
THE HALF-LIFE OF JUST THE RADIOACTIVE IODINE-129 IS 15.7 MILLION YEARS.
THE HALF-LIFE OF PLUTONIUM-240 IS 6,563 YEARS.
THE HALF-LIFE OF PLUTONIUM-239 IS 24,100 YEARS.
Plutonium-239 is used as an explosive in nuclear weapons.

After much international pressure, Tepco had collected data from 522 workers last December and announced that 178 of them had suffered radiation as high as 11,800 millisieverts . The safe limit is 100 millisieverts. This finding was submitted to the World Health Organization and revealed last December.
TEPCO LIES....TEPCO HAS ALWAYS LIED.
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS SAFE LIMITS.

SINCE NOAA AND HUNDREDS OF OTHER SCIENTISTS SAID LAST YEAR THAT THE U.S. WOULD FACE RADIATION LEVELS 10 TIMES THAT OF JAPAN, WHAT CAN WE LOOK FORWARD TO???

Just how profound the effect will be on down-winders in North America, or the entire northern hemisphere for that matter, will literally depend on where the wind blows and where the rain falls, the duration and extent of a nuclear fire or chain-reaction event, and whether or not that reaction becomes self-sustaining. At least the northern half of Japan would be uninhabitable, and some researchers have argued that it already is.

There is no example historically to draw from on a scale of this magnitude. Everything is theory. But anyone who says this can't happen is not being truthful, because nobody really knows how bad things could get.

The most disturbing part of all of this is that Fukushima has been this dangerous, and precarious, since the second week of March 2011. The ante will definitely be upped once the fuel removal starts.

11 Facts About The Ongoing Fukushima Nuclear Holocaust That Are Almost Too Horrifying To Believe
Every single day, 300 tons of radioactive water from Fukushima enters the Pacific Ocean.  The radioactive material that is being released will outlive all of us by a very wide margin, and it is constantly building up in the food chain.  Nobody knows for sure how many people will eventually develop cancer and other health problems as a result of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, but some experts are not afraid to use the word “billions”.

#1 Because of all of the damage that has taken place, computer-guided removal of the rods will not be possible.  Manual removal is much riskier, and it is absolutely essential that the removal of each of the 1,331 rods goes perfectly because a single mistake could potentially lead to a nuclear chain reaction.

#2 According to Reuters, the combined amount of cesium-137 contained in those nuclear fuel rods is 14,000 times greater than what was released when the U.S. dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima at the end of World War II.  Other estimates put this number far higher.

#3 Officials in Japan admit that 300 tons of radioactive water from Fukushima is entering the Pacific Ocean every 24 hours.

#4 According to a professor at Tokyo University, 3 gigabecquerels of cesium-137 are flowing into the port at Fukushima Daiichi every single day…

#5 According to Tepco, a total of somewhere between 20 trillion and 40 trillion becquerels of radioactive tritium have gotten into the Pacific Ocean since the Fukushima disaster first began.

#6 Something is causing fish along the west coast of Canada to bleed from their gills, bellies and eyeballs.  Could Fukushima be responsible?

An initial offer of zeolite absorbent from Rosatom, the Russian nuclear power corporation, in the first few months after the explosions, repeated in August 2013, was rebuffed by TEPCO. 
Contaminated water and soil storage reached the maximum space available THIS MONTH!

The adoption of the [SHODDY, NON-EXISTENT] decontamination method without planning the logistics for permanent storage facilities at the NPP, suggests that eventual discharge of contaminated water into the ocean or air has been and remains anticipated by TEPCO. 
THEY KNEW BETTER, BUT DID NOTHING TO PREPARE FOR THIS.

The post facto raising of safety limits for radiation exposure on 19 April 2011 (from 1 to 20mSv) and reduction of the evacuation zone to less than 30 km from the NPP, driven by an unapologetic ‘logic’ of optimal growth, ignored the passage of radioactive concentrations beyond the official concentric circles emanating from the crippled plant. These were to denote the 20km mandatory exclusion zone (greater than 50mSv) and the 30km voluntary exclusion zone (20-50mSv).

The continued dispersal of radioactive contaminant from the stricken and leaking NPP, waste incineration, the relaxation of food testing and re-circulation of irradiated fish from the Fukushima coast (Sōma, Iwaki), and re-use of contaminated areas by fast food chains for cheap food production, for example, contributes to the creation of a surplus population of humans and other living beings through the bio-accumulation of radioactive materials.

This means that due to institutional policies adopted with regard to the hazard of radiation, a certain portion of the population has been factored in as part of the ‘costs’ of maintaining nuclear power in Japan.

While funds for new military hardware, technological innovation, public works and public relations operations seem to be readily available to the Abe administration, it shrinks from the costs required to return the water, food and air to a ‘safe’ legal radiation limit (1 mSvy).

Despite being an advanced industrial nation, its government seems incapable of taking appropriate measures to protect people. ABE REFUSES to close all schools which measure above 1 mSvy in affected areas, REFUSES to assist all citizens that wish to be evacuated from areas within a 80km radius from the NPP with sufficient subventions for their moving, living and schooling costs, ABE REFUSES to prevent the consumption of contaminated foods nationally and internationally, providing a nationalised course of medical treatment commensurate with the actual danger posed by the toxicity of radiation exposure, and storing radiation contaminated materials. 

The abstraction of material conditions to justify the protection of and maintain the confidence in sovereign assets and illusory growth, is incurring real and mounting costs in human and non-human life. If unchecked, this system will continue to do so into the future until exhaustion and potential collapse. Either way, the situation is likely to get worse before significant change is achieved, which depends on the ability of people in Japan and the international community to grasp the urgency of the crisis and to demand an end to delay in preventing further contamination of the ocean and regenerating one of the most vital structures supporting life on the planet. In the short-term, the formula for measuring the risk posed by nuclear power must be re-adjusted to reflect the health of living beings in the biosphere as a non-negotiable factor. This will have immediate effects on public health, food safety and evacuation from contaminated areas. In the long term, while the debate over the choice of energy sources is critical, the systemic and astigmatic prioritization of profit has to be revised, so that state-corporate interests can no longer hijack the core values which sustain life.

Strontium (Sr89-90) mimics calcium, goes to the bone and teeth, causes bone cancers and leukaemia and is radioactive for 300 years. Along with the above, there are many other radionuclides in the inventory of nuclear reactors: alpha – thorium, radium, neptunium, curium 244, americium 241, californium, polonium 210 (transuranic and actinides); gamma – Cobalt 60, Irridium 92, Barium 137, Iodine 131, Lanthanum 140; Beta – Tritium, Phosphorous, Nickel, Carbon; Alpha and Beta – Strontium 90, Cadmium 113, Europium 155, Krypton 85, Tin 121 (Sn), Samarium 90; noble gases – Xenon and Iodine 131. As the weight or chemical mass of a radionuclide causes most damage to internal structures, when ingested heavy alpha particles are even more destructive than beta and gamma emitters.
