WHITE HOUSE LOCKDOWN, LONE GUNMAN SHOT

Snipers took to the White House roof with guns drawn
as people were cleared off the streets. Some people were heard screaming on Pennsylvania Avenue.

A U.S. law enforcement official said Friday evening that authorities had identified the gunman as Jesse Oliveri of Ashland, Pennsylvania. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to release the information.
Federal agents found ammunition inside a Toyota sedan, parked nearby on Constitution Avenue, that the gunman was believed to have driven, the official said.

All Secret Service protectees are safe, according to the Secret Service.

There are multiple road closures in the area of the White House, including Pennsylvania Avenue NW.

The man with the gun reportedly said he wanted to die, CBS News reports.

A gun has been recovered at the shooting scene, according to CBS News.

The White House was locked down this afternoon after the U.S. Park Police reported a shooting near the presidential residence.

Law enforcement sources tell ABC News one person has been shot by law enforcement near the White House, but not on the grounds.

The shooting was reported shortly after 3 p.m.
"He was carrying a gun — it was a silver gun in clear sight, walked through the fence line," Larry Samples, who was on E and witnessed the shooting, said.

"They immediately tried to stop him and came up to him," Samples said. "Yelled at him multiple times 'stop, stop, stop.' He kept ignoring him."
The man who was shot, identified only as a white male, was shot in the chest by a member of the Secret Service Uniformed Division, a federal official said.

Officials said the man was brandishing the gun and was shot after refusing several commands to drop it. No one else was hurt.
The president was not in the White House at the time of the incident at 17th Street and E Street.

Vice President Biden was reported to be “within the complex” at the White House, but is “secure," according to a spokesperson.

The White House lockdown was lifted by 4 p.m.
"No one within or associated with the White House was injured, and everyone in the White House is safe and accounted for. The president has been made aware of the situation," according to a White House official.

The White House went into lockdown Friday afternoon after what federal law enforcement agencies said was a shooting just outside the West Wing.

President Obama was on a golf outing at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland when the shooting occurred.

The Secret Service did not immediately say where the shooting occurred, and there were conflicting accounts from other agencies.

The U.S. Park Police, which has jurisdiction of the neighborhood surrounding the White House, said there was a shooting shortly after 3 p.m.on West Executive Drive.

But the District of Columbia Fire Department said it happened at a gate farther away, at an employee entrance at 17th and E Streets, N.W., and that they transported someone to a local hospital.

West Executive Drive falls within the security perimeter of the White House complex and separates the West Wing offices from the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, which houses additional offices for the Executive Office of the President, including the ceremonial office of the Vice President.

Reporters in the White House briefing room said they were told to shelter in place in the White House basement. Secret Service snipers could be seen on the roof of the White House training their weapons in the direction of the shooting.

Secret Service told people to evacuate the area and closed off the park area north of the White House.

Secret Service officers on Friday shot a male suspect near a security checkpoint close to the White House after he apparently brandished a weapon, a law enforcement source said.

The suspect was shot in the abdomen and taken into custody, according to two sources familiar with the incident.

The city's EMS said a patient identified as the suspect has been transported to a local hospital with critical injuries. Another law enforcement official said investigators have located the suspect's vehicle near the shooting area.
The U.S. Park Police said Friday a shooting had occurred in close vicinity to the White House.
"Shooting on W. Executive Dr. PIO en route to 17th and Pennsylvania," the law enforcement agency tweeted.
