Three former Japanese prime ministers have said so publicly and begged him to not host the Olympics so that the health of visitors and athletes are not adversely affected by high radiation levels that many say Abe, TEPCO and the nuclear regulatory commissions there and here in the U.S. are hiding and/or manipulating to seem harmless.
TEPCO has been busted several times concealing high readings by shielding the monitors and simple, intentional failures to report.

In a meeting of the Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) in June, one of its members, Nobuhiko Ban, told TEPCO officials, “I want you to show whether you have a prospect (for the reduction of contaminated water) or you have given up.”

Immediately after the nuclear accident at the Fukushima plant in March 2011, highly contaminated water leaked into the sea through underground tunnels. As a result, radioactive substances whose concentrations were higher than allowable standards were detected in fish and other seafood.After the nuclear accident, about 100,000 tons of water initially accumulated in the basement portions of buildings that housed the No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 reactors and buildings that accommodated turbines."
"The pools at the Fukushima complex are just that – open basins resembling swimming pools. Six are perched on a sort of mezzanine above and adjacent to reactor containment vessels. They’re about 40 feet long by 30 feet wide by 36 feet deep, though they vary in size.
If heat in the pool continues to build and water boils down and fuel rods stored in the pool are exposed, more radiation might escape into the atmosphere.
The sides of the pools have doors, which open to allow cranes to move fuel-rod assemblies from the reactor to the pool. These doors have inflatable seals that guard against leakage.

CONTINUING FROM ASAHI SHIMBUN: "Eight years since the nuclear accident occurred, the volume of highly contaminated water in the buildings has fallen to 18,000 tons.
However, work to decrease the water has not progressed as expected.
As for the area in the basement of the No. 3 reactor building, it is known that water used to cool melted nuclear fuel is flowing into the area. But why the water level does not drop only in that area is not known.
If the water level in the building remains high, highly contaminated water there could leak into the ground through cracks when the groundwater level outside the building drops. If the leaks occur, the entire effort to decrease the amount of highly contaminated water will be stalled.
The NRA is also requiring TEPCO to take anti-tsunami measures because if a huge tsunami engulfs the buildings again, it could send highly contaminated water pouring into the sea
However, anti-tsunami measures are also delayed.
The work to close openings that could become locations for leakage of highly contaminated water during a tsunami is expected to continue until the end of fiscal 2021.
Such openings exist at 50 locations at present."

In the recent -- and strongly worded -- report, EPA Inspector General Arthur Elkins Jr. lays out numerous problems with EPA's Radiation Network Program, or RadNet. The program monitors the level of radiation in air, precipitation, drinking water and milk through a national network of monitoring stations.
EPA has not made the program a priority, according to the report. When the agency increased radiation monitoring in the aftermath of the Fukushima meltdown, it discovered that 25 of 124 monitors had been out of service for an average of 130 days. EPA's solution for needed spare parts: "cannibalizing" new monitors under construction.
Such last-minute management of the system means that the program remains "vulnerable," according to the report.
"If RadNet is not managed as a high-priority program, EPA may not have the needed data before, during, and after a critical event such as the Japan nuclear incident," IG investigators wrote. "Such data are crucial to determine levels of airborne radioactivity that may negatively affect public health and the environment."
The report also criticizes EPA for not following through with recommendations from the IG's January 2009 report that found that the full implementation of the RadNet system was behind schedule."

"After admitting earlier this month that up to 300 tons of radioactive water were leaking every day into the Pacific Ocean, a new leak problem has been upgraded by Japan’s Nuclear Regulatory Agency from a level one “anomaly” to a level three “serious incident” on the International Nuclear Event Scale.
[A] separate 300 ton “serious” leak is the latest of a myriad of problems at Fukushima. It came from a tank put together in a slapdash manner by Tokyo Electric Power Co. (Tepco) soon after the disaster. The tank, held together by bolts and resin, was not sealed through welding, according to local media reports.
The leak from the storage tank is particularly worrisome for two reasons. First, it emits high levels of radiation — 100 millisieverts an hour, the maximum exposure that a nuclear worker is allowed to receive in one year. Second, there are around 350 tanks containing such contaminated water that were assembled in the same slapdash manner.
News of the leak was met with a shrug in Japan, where an estimated 94 percent of the population said it believes the disaster has not been resolved, according to a March survey by Hirotada Hirose of Tokyo Woman’s University.
“Water problems will persist for four to eight years at least,” said Jeff Kingston, a Temple University professor of Asian studies who has written extensively on the disaster. “Fuel rod moving? Four years, and hopefully with no accident. [An accident moving the rods] would be catastrophic.
Public sentiment remains firmly against nuclear energy, despite the economic implications of moving away from the energy source. Hirose’s March survey found 85 percent of the 1,200 respondents want the nation to phase out nuclear energy. Of those, 31 percent wanted to see it brought to an end as soon as possible.”

"Following the March 2011 meltdown at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, reactors have sprayed immeasurable amounts of radioactive material into the air, most of which settles into the Pacific Ocean.
A study by the American Geophysical Union has found that radiation levels from Alaska to California have increased and continue to increase since they were last taken.
Instead of presenting the findings as an alarming sign of growing radiation, however, Ken Buesseler of Woods Hole emphasizes that the Cesium-134 levels detected are still 500 times lower than the drinking water limits set by the U.S. government. The news site 'The Big Wobble' questions whether Buesseler's and Woods Hole’s heavy financial reliance on the U.S. government – Woods Hole has received nearly $8 million in research funding from several government agencies – plays any role in this emphasis.
The reality, however, is that radiation along the West Coast is expected to keep getting worse. According to a 2013 study by the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center in Norway, the oceanic radiation plume released by Fukushima is likely to hit the North American West Coast in force in 2017, with levels peaking in 2018. Most of the radioactive material from the disaster is likely to stay concentrated on the western coast through at least 2026.
According to professor Michio Aoyama of Japan’s Fukushima University Institute of Environmental Radioactivity, the amount of radiation from Fukushima that has now reached North America is probably nearly as much as was spread over Japan during the initial disaster.
The recent Woods Hole study also confirmed that radioactive material is still leaking into the Pacific Ocean from the crippled Fukushima plant. Cesium-134 levels off the Japanese coast are between 10 and 100 times higher than those detected off the coast of California.
Without directly challenging the U.S. government’s “safe” radiation limits, Buesseler obliquely references the fact that any radioactive contamination of the ocean is cause for concern.
“Despite the fact that the levels of contamination off our shores remain well below government-established safety limits for human health or to marine life,” he said, “the changing values underscore the need to more closely monitor contamination levels across the Pacific.
