The Canadian federal government in Ottawa has silenced a leading West Coast fisheries scientist who has argued that a virus is infecting and killing sockeye salmon when they enter the Fraser River, not far north of the U.S.-Canadian border.
The undammed “mighty Fraser” supports four of the world’s greatest sockeye salmon runs, push other salmon, fish that are caught by commercial, recreational and native fishers in waters of both the U.S. and Canada.
Salmon bound for the Fraser River use two routes coming from the Pacific. They migrate down Johnstone Strait in Canadian waters, as well as through the Strait of Juan de Fuca which forms the U.S.-Canada boundary.
The Privy Council Office, senior bureaucratic component of Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government, has told scientist Kristi Miller not to talk to media about Miller’s “Suffering Salmon” study, according to documents obtained by Postmedia News.
Miller directs a $6 million salmon genetics project at the Ministry of Fisheries and Oceans’ Pacific Biological Station on Vancouver Island. The research journal Science published her findings in January.
“When the lead author of a paper in Science is not permitted to speak about her work, that is suppression: There is simply no ifs, ands or buts about that,” said Jeffrey Hutchings, a senior fisheries scientist at Dalhousie University in Halifax, quoted by Marlies Jordan in the Vancouver Sun.
Canada’s federal scientists study fish stocks on both coasts, marine mammals, food safety, and air quality. They are being put under an increasingly tight leash by the Harper government.
“In one high-profile case reported by Postmedia News last year,” wrote Jordan, “Natural Resources Canada scientist Scott Dallimore had to wait for ‘pre-clearance’ from political staff in the minister’s office in Ottawa to speak about a study on a colossal flood that swept across northern Canada at the end of the last ice age.”
The Ministry of Fisheries and Oceans has been plagued over the years by charges that it miscounts and mismanages West Coast salmon runs.
A fisheries biologist named Alexandra Morton, who lives on the wild coast, has charged that the department turned a blind eye to negative impacts of salmon farming on wild salmon: Populations of wild fish have plummeted after they were infected with sea lice.
And scientists have found themselves under politician oversight as they studied proposed additional diversion of Nechako River waters to power the huge Alcan aluminum smelter in Kitimat. Stuart Lake, home to one of the Fraser’s premier runs, is on a river tributary of the Nechako.
Sockeye salmon swim facing a rugged trip upriver through the Fraser Canyon and from there to distant spawning lakes. The journey to Stuart Lake is 900 miles, with Chilko Lake a slightly shorter journey. The Adams River run, which spawns in a river near Shuswap Lake, is world-famous.
Miller has not identified a specific disease that is compromising survivorship, but her report in Science identified one possibility as a virus associated with leukemia which, reported Jordan, “can be transmitted from fish to fish.”
Time magazine, the CBC Postmedia News and other media on both sides of the border asked to talk with Miller about her piece in Science, but were rebuffed. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans’ communications office for the Pacific Region asked that Miller be cleared to talk, but was rebuffed by the Privy Council Office.
Miller’s study was published in Science, but the article was of a highly technical nature."
FAST FORWARD TO 2019 and we see what the scientists 'think' they've discovered...three viruses in both the sockeye and the Chinook salmon, one that inhabits their gills being related to the coronavirus that bats and a couple of other MAMMALS have.
How the salmon are acquiring these three viruses NOT found in fish before is an unsolved mystery.
One of the three new viruses was identified in more than 15 percent of all the tested hatchery Chinook salmon. Another was found present in 20 percent of farmed Chinook.
THAT 15% AND 20% GRABBED MY ATTENTION SINCE THAT WOULDN'T EXPLAIN SUCH HUGE DIE-OFFS IN MARINE SPECIES ACROSS THE GLOBE.
BUT RADIATION CONTAMINATION MIGHT.

BUT THE SCIENTISTS DIDN'T FOLLOW THROUGH WITH EXTENSIVE RADIATION TESTING AND NOAA, ALONG WITH WOODS HOLE ASSURED US THE RADIATION IN THE OCEANS WAS NOT A PROBLEM.

Researchers suggest their findings, published this week in the journal eLife, are a reminder of the evolving threats to salmon health, both in the wild and in aquaculture. The study's authors called for improved monitoring efforts and follow-up research to determine the health impacts of these newly identified viruses.
"Being able to screen so many fish for these viruses was an exciting breakthrough, and meant we were able to identify hot spots of infection," said Gideon Mordecai, researcher in the department of earth, ocean and atmospheric sciences at the University of British Columbia. "One of the viruses was relatively common in juvenile migratory salmon as they enter the ocean -- a period thought to be critical to their survival into adulthood."
This could at least partially explain the decades of decline in these two species of salmon that so many depend on for food.
WHY was it suppressed for years by the Canadian government?
NO ONE has made a long term study of how these viruses can affect humans or marine animals that prey on salmon.
BACK TO MILLER...
The muzzle on scientists was lifted after Trudeau's win in Canada, in 2015.
Miller was the first to speak out.
"We [are now] free to speak to the press without contacting media relations," she said. "And in fact we are encouraged to get back to them quickly."
It's a far cry from 2011, when Miller was shocked to find herself prevented from discussing her research into the 2009 Fraser River sockeye salmon collapse following its publication in Science magazine.
"I was told at the time that the problem with the study was that it was talking about dying salmon, and that wasn't a positive news story," Miller said.
She eventually discovered that the decision to stop her talking came from the top — directly from the prime minister's office. She was only allowed to talk publicly about her work in response to questions while testifying at the Cohen Commission Inquiry.
Miller said that it seemed she wasn't supposed to test fish or look for fish with viruses or disease, but that tests done as far back as 2002 did find indicators of the Infectious Salmon Anemia (ISA) virus in pacific salmon and that her lab had discovered evidence of the virus from fish gathered in 1986.
Federal fisheries officials in Canada dismissed the report's conclusions, according to the Global Edmonton in Canada.
In an emailed statement, fisheries officials said the tests used by Molly Kibenge, one of the report's authors, are highly sensitive and often result in false positives.
"Appropriate follow-up was done on Dr. Kibenge's work using more thorough testing procedures and, based on the best science available, it was concluded that her results had produced a false positive and there was no presence of ISA in her samples," stated the officials.
BUT THE TEST IS "HIGHLY SENSITIVE"...MEANING IT CAN PERHAPS DETECT WHAT OTHERS FAIL TO FIND.
However, the government's claims did not ally critics who say it should have published the report.
"We had no knowledge of any of this," Jim Winton told The Seattle Times. Winton is a top fish virologist at the U.S. Geological Survey in Seattle, who reviewed the researcher's findings this week.
The virus is considered so dangerous that, according to the Times, if its presence is confirmed, Canada is obligated to report it to the World Organization for Animal Health, just as it would foot-and-mouth disease or bird flu. Such a report would be a devastating blow to British Columbia's aquaculture industry.
Earlier controversy over findings
This is not the first time potential viruses threats have been discovered in B.C. salmon. The Cohen Commission was tasked with the investigation into the 2009 collapse of the Fraser River salmon run, and the results of the investigation have also pointed to Salmon Leukemia Virus (SLV), another lethal virus that kills wild Sockeye salmon.
Miller [was] testifying with two other scientists from Canada and one via teleconference from Norway. The Cohen Commission was created two years ago to study the decline of sockeye salmon in the Fraser River, which also habitate in American waterways.
This hearing regarding the ISA virus is being held in a modern conference room with dozens of lawyers and onlookers gathered around in elevating levels of circles.
The lawyers represent multiple levels of government and stakeholders involved in the fishing & aquaculture industries. The scientists were crossed examined by some of those lawyers.
Marine Harvest has asked to intervene in the case. In recent court documents filed as part of the case, Marine Harvest has acknowledged that PRV has been found in its B.C. hatcheries and said that if the government required it to test all fish for disease prior to introduction into the ocean “it would severely impact Marine Harvest.”

Activists are calling on the government to declare the Baikonur Cosmodrome an environmental disaster zone and force Russia to leave the space port.
"Shortly after launch, there was an anomaly with the booster and the launch ascent was aborted, resulting in a ballistic landing of the spacecraft," NASA reported, noting that the two crew members aboard survived.
The astronauts touched down 25km from the city of Jezkazgan in the Karaganda Province, according to news portal Tengrinews.kz.
Last month, locals witnessed large numbers of dead sea creatures including seals, octopuses and sea urchins wash up onto the black-sanded beach.
Kazakh environmentalists and citizen activists are raising concerns that the Soyuz MS-10 mishap has caused environmental damage. The main issue is the fuel used in rocket launches.
In addition to kerosene, Soyuz launch vehicles use fuel with a secret chemical composition, Ulan Shamshet, founder of the Almaty-based Antigeptil environmental movement, told Caravanserai.
His concern is that the secrecy of this information is related to the fuel's high potential risk of danger to the environment.
Shamshet recalled that in July 2013 a Russian Proton-M launch vehicle crashed in Kazakhstan with three Glosnass-M satellites on board.
In that case, the rocket diverged from the planned trajectory after taking off, broke apart in the air and fell to the ground not far from the cosmodrome, he said. The explosion was extremely powerful, since the device was loaded with roughly 600 tons of fuel, including heptyl.
According to official information "the rocket debris was found in Russia, but in reality Russian specialists found it in Kazakhstan and carried it away into their own country", he told Caravanserai.
"The saiga antelope inhabiting the Kazakh steppe died following the Proton crash," Shamshet said. "Now, after the recent Soyuz accident, we expect another environmental disaster."
The environmental damage from the Proton crash five years ago was estimated to cost more than 13 billion KZT (more than $85 million at the time), according to Kazakhstan's Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources.
Russia has not compensated Kazakhstan for the environmental damages.

The same was found for two previous mass die-offs of antelopes in 1981 and 1988 in central Asia.

What landed in the ocean, quickly worked its way through the food chain.
Plutonium, Americium, Uranium, and other highly toxic elements were found a few months later in every single organism tested in Alaskan waters, by the US Department of Energy. It will require years of extensive (and very expensive) testing, across multiple affected species, to determine the direct cause, and check isotope analysis in every animal affected. If you’re a human, this would be the perfect opportunity to adopt the precautionary principle.

In fact, they cancelled their health registry a few months after the sailors returned from their mission, stating: “After extensive environmental monitoring and analysis, it has been determined that none of the nearly 70,000 members of the [Department of Defense] affiliated population … are known to have been exposed to radiation at levels associated with adverse medical conditions.”
Well, if that’s true, then it appears President Obama wasn’t lying when he stated early on that the opinion of the NRC was that no harmful radiation would reach our shores [IT DID. IT STILL DOES.], and the CDC was correct by not recommending any precautionary measures be taken by the public. Right? Wrong.
AND ALL OF THEM LIED.

If I hadn’t read the NRC FOIA transcripts detailing how those lying bastards operate. If I hadn’t witnessed TEPCO being caught in lie after lie after lie since this whole thing started, including all the ‘cold-shutdown’ garbage than ran on over 300 mainstream media sources.
If I hadn’t read how sick things become when they are exposed to radiation. If I hadn’t read the increased mortality study from the US, or the sick baby study from Iodine 131 exposure in the 5 west coast states. And, if I hadn’t ever read the Plutonium Beagle dog study, which on some days, I wish I never had.

“This study was conducted to determine the biological effects of inhaled 238PuO2 over the life spans of 144 beagle dogs. The dogs inhaled one of two sizes of monodisperse aerosols of 238PuO2 to achieve graded levels of initial lung burden (ILB).
The aerosols also contained 169Yb to provide a gamma-ray-emitting label for the 238Pu inhaled by each dog. Excreta were collected periodically over each dog’s life span to estimate plutonium excretion; at death, the tissues were analyzed radiochemically for plutonium activity. The tissue content and the amount of plutonium excreted were used to estimate the ILB.
These data for each dog were used in a dosimetry model to estimate tissue doses. The lung, skeleton and liver received the highest alpha-particle doses, ranging from 0.16-68 Gy for the lung, 0.08-8.7 Gy for the skeleton and 0.18-19 for the liver. At death all dogs were necropsied, and all organs and lesions were sampled and examined OF THE REAGAN]by histopathology.
Findings of non-neoplastic changes included neutropenia and lymphopenia that developed in a dose-related fashion soon after inhalation exposure. These effects persisted for up to 5 years in some animals, but no other health effects could be related to the blood changes observed. Radiation pneumonitis was observed among the dogs with the highest ILBs. Deaths from radiation pneumonitis occurred from 1.5 to 5.4 years after exposure.
Tumors of the lung, skeleton and liver occurred beginning at about 3 years after exposure. Bone tumors found in 93 dogs were the most common cause of death. Lung tumors found in 46 dogs were the second most common cause of death. Liver tumors, which were found in 20 dogs but were the cause of death in only two dogs, occurred later than the tumors in bone and lung. Tumors in these three organs often occurred in the same animal and were competing causes of death. These findings in dogs suggest that similar dose-related biological effects could be expected in humans accidentally exposed to 238PuO2.”

How about seals? Polar bears? And walruses? Whales, dolphins, sea stars, sea turtles, sea birds, crustaceans, shellfish, SALMON, herring, anchovies, sardines, urchins? They've all suffered mass die-offs since Fukushima and are exposed DAILY to its radiation in every ocean.

Dr. Ernest Sternglass wrote in his book “Secret Fallout“, following the Simon atomic test in Nevada, whose comparatively low level radioactivity rained out 2,500 miles away in upstate New York:
