FUKUSHIMA RADIATION, CANCER FOUND IN SEALS, WALRUSES

In 2012, a necropsy of a California harbor seal also revealed cancer.

"A growth was found on her salivatory gland (which were removed just prior to this photo) – on closer inspection of her mouth later, we found cancer. She had lost most of her molars to the tumors. Seals swallow their food whole, so she had no problem feeding. Typically harbor seals apparently don’t live long enough to get cancer."

NO GREAT WHITE SHARK WAS EVER SEEN WITH CANCER BEFORE, EITHER....
AND THEN A PACIFIC GREAT WHITE WAS PHOTOGRAPHED WITH CANCEROUS TUMORS IN 2013 NEAR AUSTRALIA. 
 It's the first documented tumor in this species.

"This was a very unusual sight as we have never before seen a [great] white shark with tumors," said Rachel Robbins, a study co-author and shark biologist at the Fox Shark Research Foundation, near Adelaide, in southern Australia.

"Fukushima-derived radiocesium was detected in migratory northern fur seal… In July 2014, our investigative team traveled to St. Paul Island, Alaska to measure concentrations of radiocesium in wild-caught food…
[O]ther investigators have detected Fukushima-derived radionuclides in a variety of marine products harvested off the western coast of North America.

We tested… 54 northern fur seal… when composited, northern fur seal tissues tested positive for trace quantities of [Cesium-134 adn Cesium-137].

Radiocesium was detected at an activity concentration of 37.2 mBq 134Cs kg [fresh weight, not dried] and 141.2 mBq 137Cs kg… indicating that this population of seals has been exposed to ... Fukushima-derived radiocesium.

Scientists present links between unusual Alaska seal deaths and Fukushima fallout —
Skin lesions, hair loss, lethargy, mutations, tumors, bleeding disorders, etc —
 ‘Pulsed release’ refers to when built-up radionuclides were set free as ice melted —
 “Wildlife health implications” due to radiation exposure discussed.
The ongoing Alaska 2011 Northern Pinnipeds UME investigation continues to explore a mix of potential etiologies (infectious, endocrine, toxins, nutritious etc.), including radioactivity.
Currently, the underlying etiology remains undetermined [i.e. scientists don’t yet know what caused the seals’ sickness, but they think it might have been Fukushima radiation].
We present results on gamma analysis (cesium 134 and 137) of muscle tissue from control and diseased seals, and discuss wildlife health implications from different possible routes of exposure to Fukushima fallout to ice seals
Since the Fukushima fallout period occurred during the annual sea ice cover period from Nome to Barrow, a sea ice based fallout scenario in addition to a marine food web based one is of particular relevance for the Fukushima accident.

Under a proposed sea ice fallout deposition scenario, radionuclides would have been settled onto sea ice. Sea ice and snow would have acted as a temporary refuge for deposited radionuclides; thus radionuclides would have only become available for migration during the melting season and would not have entered the regional food web in any appreciable manner until breakup (pulsed release).

The cumulative on-ice exposure for ice seals would have occurred through externalinhalation, and non-equilibrium dietary pathways during the ice-based seasonal spring haulout period for molting/pupping/breeding activities.


Additionally, ice seals would have been under dietary/metabolic constraints and experiencing hormonal changes associated with reproduction and molting.

WHY NOT TEST IN THE LAB WITH MORE SENSITIVE EQUIPMENT?

JUST TO DOUBLE-CHECK, I DID THREE SEARCHES BY THREE DIFFERENT SEARCH ENGINES FOR "RESULTS OF RADIATION TEST PACIFIC WHALE (AND THEN SEAL, WALRUS, POLAR BEAR, DOLPHIN, SEA TURTLE, PELICAN)" AND ALL CAME BACK WITH NO RESULTS BUT THE ONES ABOVE.

HOW CAN RESULTS STILL BE PENDING FROM 4 YEARS AGO?
HOW CAN RESULTS STILL BE UNPUBLISHED IF THERE ARE ANY RESULTS?


ONE ARTICLE TEASED:

Radiation levels have been quite low in every study conducted to date.

BUT, NO, NO ACTUAL PRINTOUTS OF RESULTS.

Scientists with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in Massachusetts reported Monday that a water sample collected in mid-February from a dock in Ucluelet, on British Columbia's Vancouver Island, contained trace amounts of cesium-134 and cesium-137 – isotopes that only come from human sources.
However, the levels detected in the sample were so low that even if someone were to swim for six hours a day, every day of the year in water containing twice as much cesium, the radiation received would still be 1,000 times less than what they would receive from a single dental X-ray."

(1) CESIUM 134

THIS PARTICULAR CESIUM  COMES ONLY FROM THE FUKUSHIMA'S DAI'ICHI PLANT.   
IT MOST DEFINITELY WAS FOUND IN ALASKA YEARS PRIOR TO THE WOODS HOLE "FIND".

IT DID NOT, I REPEAT, DID NOT APPEAR IN THE ENVIRONMENT FROM PREVIOUS NUCLEAR TESTING, OR FROM NUCLEAR BOMBS DROPPED ON JAPAN.

IT IS A NEW THING UNDER THE SUN.  

THAT THE WOODS HOLE BOYS FOUND "TRACE AMOUNTS" OVER 4 YEARS AFTER THE INITIAL DISASTER IS VERY IMPORTANT.  


IT PROVES THAT FUKUSHIMA IS STILL LEAKING, STILL PUMPING OUT, AMONG MANY, MANY OTHER RADIONUCLIDES, CESIUM 134.THAT ARTICLE ADMITS THIS FACT:

"They say they are certain the radioactivity came from Fukushima because cesium-134 has half-life of only two years, meaning the cesium decays relatively rapidly, and the only recent source of cesium-134 has been Fukushima."   

[PLEASE NOTE: AS AN "ANONYMOUS" COMMENT POINTS OUT, QUOTING THAT COMMENT, "cs134 half life is 2 years, after 2 years, half of it will be gone, after another 2 years, you halve the quantity that was left, and so on...." 'ANONYMOUS IS, OF COURSE CORRECT.

HOWEVER, WE DO KNOW CESIUM 134 IS STILL LEAKING FROM DAI'ICHI. IT WILL LEAK UNTIL SOMEONE STOPS ALL THE LEAKS, WHICH IS IMPOSSIBLE TO DO IN ANY NUCLEAR REACTOR ANYWHERE. THEY LEAK, FROM DAY 1 TO DAY LAST AND BEYOND. THE DAMNED THINGS LEAK.]   


LIKE ONE SCIENTIST CAUTIONED: "WHERE THERE IS CESIUM, THERE IS ALSO PLUTONIUM, STRONTIUM, {ETC}..."
REACTORS DON'T JUST LEAK ONE LITTLE RADIONUCLIDE!

ANOTHER LINE THAT DOESN'T QUITE TELL THE TRUTH: 

"Last November (2014), the team found Fukushima radioactivity in a sample taken about 150 kilometers offshore of Northern California.

However, no radiation had been found, until now, in any samples taken near Canadian or American shorelines."

THE STATEMENT WAS, THEY DID FIND IT LAST NOVEMBER, NOVEMBER OF 2014, A MERE 150 KILOMETERS, OR JUST 93 MILES OFF THE CALIFORNIA SHORE. 


 
THE ARTICLE ABOVE WAS WRITTEN IN APRIL, 2015, AND STATES NONE WAS FOUND NEAR SHORE UNTIL NOW.  

 
ARE WE TO BELIEVE THE WATER IN WHICH THE CECIUM 134 WAS FOUND IN 2014 JUST SAT THERE FOR 6 MONTHS AND DIDN'T DRIFT INLAND WITH TIDES, CURRENT, ONSHORE WINDS, ETC.?

ONLY A FOOL WOULD SAY THAT.  

THEREFORE, IT IS SAFE TO SAY THAT JUST OFFSHORE OF AMERICA'S WEST COAST, CESIUM 134 WAS DETECTED IN 2014.

AS WE WILL SEE BELOW, CESIUM 134 WAS DETECTED ON AMERICAN SOIL IN 2011.
WE MAY ALSO ASSUME THAT CONTAMINATED WATER DID TOUCH SHORE BEFORE APRIL, 2015.

IT RAINED.

THE DAI'ICHI PLANT EXPLODED IN 2011...THERE HAD TO HAVE BEEN CESIUM 134 IN OUR WATERS BY 2013 AT THE OUTSIDE. 
AND YET THE DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY DETECTED IT HERE IN 2011.

DID THE RADIATION SOMEHOW POSTPONE THE TRIP?

 Even some standard X-rays, which expose you to much smaller amounts of radiation, can pose risks if you undergo multiple ones.

Marvin M. Lipman, M.D., Consumer Reports’ chief medical adviser: 

“But the effect of radiation is cumulative, and the more you’re exposed, the greater your cancer risk. So it’s essential that you always ask your doctors why they are ordering an imaging test and whether your problem could be managed without it.”

Cancers from medical radiation can take anywhere from five to 60 years to develop, and risk also depends on age and lifestyle. 

Other researchers estimate that for every 1,000 children who have an abdominal CT scan, one will develop cancer as a result. And a 2012 study that looked at almost 180,000 British children linked CT scans to higher rates of leukemia and brain cancer."

This is a school 50 kilometers northeast of Tokyo, in a city called Moriya. A local citizens' group recently carried out examinations on 85 children under the age of 18 and found out that 58 of them, or 70 percent had radioactive cesium in their urine samples. 


The kind of cesium detected is a fission product formed in nuclear power plants.

Members of the group say there's a high chance the cesium entered the children's bodies after eating food contaminated with radioactive material.

Abstract 

The devastating tsunami triggered by the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011 inundated the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) resulting in a loss of cooling and a series of explosions releasing the largest quantity of radioactive material into the atmosphere since the Chernobyl nuclear accident. Although 80% of the radionuclides from this accidental release were transported over the Pacific Ocean, 20% were deposited over Japanese coastal catchments that are subject to frequent typhoons. Among the radioisotopes released during the FDNPP accident, radiocesium (134Cs and137Cs) is considered the most serious current and future health risk for the local population.

The goal of this review is to synthesize research relevant to the transfer of FDNPP derived radiocesium from hillslopes to the Pacific Ocean. After radiocesium fallout deposition on vegetation and soils, the contamination may remain stored in forest canopies, in vegetative litter on the ground, or in the soil.

Once radiocesium contacts soil, it is quickly and almost irreversibly bound to fine soil particles.
The kinetic energy of raindrops instigates the displacement of soil particles, and their bound radiocesium, which may be mobilized and transported with overland flow.

Soil erosion is one of the main processes transferring particle-bound radiocesium from hillslopes through rivers and streams, and ultimately to the Pacific Ocean.

Accordingly this review will summarize results regarding the fundamental processes and dynamics that govern radiocesium transfer from hillslopes to the Pacific Ocean published in the literature within the first four years after the FDNPP accident.

The majority of radiocesium is reported to be transported in the particulate fraction, attached to fine particles.

Cesium-137 levels recorded off the coast of Japan in the Pacific Ocean WERE (PRIOR TO 3/11) among the planets lowest, measuring around 2 becquerels per cubic meter (1 becquerel/Bq equals one radioactive decay event per second) but are now reading at 60 million becquerels per cubic meter.   


This is said to be high enough to cause
reproductive and health effects in marine animals."

"New Zealanders who eat a lot of seafood may be exposing themselves to radiation and putting their health at risk, a study suggests.
Researchers found seafood such as mussels, paua and oysters contained concentrated levels of radiation.
Those at particular risk were sub-populations for whom fish consumption was culturally important and those relying of fishing and shellfish collection to feed their families, the study’s authors said in an article released on Friday.
“Seafood has importance to the New Zealand population as a source of nutrition consumed in considerable amounts by some sectors of the community,” they said.  
“Chemical contaminants in seafood can therefore lead to significant health burdens to the population and it is an important public health function to identify the contaminants of concern and characterise their exposure.”
Researchers measured levels of radioactive caesium and polonium in 36 kinds of seafood. 
Levels of caesium were of minimal dietary concern, but levels of polonium could “contribute significantly to the dietary dose of ionising radiation for high seafood consumers, although the magnitude varies considerably depending on the composition of seafood species consumed,” the researchers said.
Radiation levels were higher in seafood than other foods, they said.
The study by Andrew Pearson, Sally Gaw, Nikolaus Hermanspahn and Chris Glover was published in the Journal of Environmental Radioactivity earlier this year.

The Great Pacific Gyre
 
The network of currents comprise a larger hydrodynamic system known as North Pacific Gyre. Flotsam and jetsam from northeast Japan are moved along this path:
 
- The Liman or Oyashio (Parent Stream), a mineral-rich cold Arctic current that moves southwest from the Bering Strait past Kamchatka Peninsula and along Japan's northeast region of Tohoku. The water used to cool the Fukushima meltdown is dumped into the passing Liman, which carries the radioactive wastewater southward toward Choshi Point, east of Tokyo..
 
- The rocky outcrop at Choshi forces the Liman to swerve eastward, where it collides with the tropical Kuroshio Current moving northward. The interaction of these opposing currents is complicated.
 
The cold Liman is forced underneath the warm Black Tide, which explains why rockfish, abalone, sea urchins and other bottom dwellers have high readings of radioactivity.
 
    An analysis lab in Fukushima has reported 15,000 becquerels per kg, or six times the legally allowable content. (The studies, like all in Japan, use the controversial method of taking average readings from entire samples, instead of measuring hot spots that can be 5 times higher.)
 
- Along the boundaries of the two currents, gigantic eddies are spun off. The mixing of nutrient-rich cold water with the warm current spurs the genesis of marine life, spawning algae and the larvae of fish and invertebrates. The waters off eastern Japan form the world's richest fishery.
Of special importance in the food chain are squid, cuttlefish and others in the cephalopod family, which comprise the basic source of protein for fish.
 
- The merged Liman and Kuroshio become the North Pacific Current, pushing eastward to North America. Large predatory species, including tuna and salmon, feed here on the contaminated squid and on small fishes like herring and mackerel.
 
- When the North Pacific Current hits the continental shelf, it divides. One stream veers northward along the Canadian and Alaskan coast, and then swings counterclockwise toward the Bering Strait and Kamchatka Peninsula. These areas are the breeding grounds of seals, walruses, whales and sea otters. The region is also a major supplier of salmon and sea cucumbers for the Asian markets.
 
- The other stream turns clockwise to the south, becoming the California Current, the breeding waters of sea lions, pelicans and humpback whales. That southern stream eventually splits into two new currents: the Equatorial Pacific, which moves from Mexico to the Philippines, where it rejoins the Kuroshio; and the Peruvian, heading southward along the coast of South America and then westward into the South Pacific.
 
- The distance between northeast Japan and the Pacific Northwest is about 8,000 kilometers.
The Kuroshio-North Pacific Current normally makes the passage in about six to seven months. Heavier materials, such as timber, will move at about half that pace, but chemicals dissolved in the water have already started to reach the Pacific seaboard of North America, a reality being ignored by the U.S. and Canadian governments.

It is all-too easy for governments to downplay the threat.   
 
 
Radiation levels are difficult to detect in water, with readings often measuring 1/20th of the actual content.

Yet the fact remains that radioactive isotopes, including cesium, strontium, cobalt and plutonium, are present in sea water on a scale at least five times greater than the fallout over land in Japan.
 
According to a recent estimate by the France-based Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety, radioactive sea-dumping from Fukushima is 30 times the amount stated by the Tokyo Electric Power Company.
 
The total amount leaked into the sea is closer to 27 quadrillion becquerels.
A quadrillion is 1,000 trillion.
 
That does not include airborne isotopes that have fallen into the Pacific.
 
Unlike those stories about arsenic, a tiny dose every day of cesium will not make one immune from its toxic effect.
   
Mega-scale fluid dynamics show that the Fukushima nuclear disaster will soon contaminate most of the vital fisheries of the Pacific, which comprises half of the world's sea surface.
 
Over the 30-year half-life of cesium, radioactive isotopes will be recycled a dozen times or more.   
NATURALLY, IN TIME, EVERYTHING  will move into the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
 
If some evil genius, a modern-day Captain Nemo, were to plan the extermination of life on Earth, there could hardly be a better spot for hatching this nefarious plot than Fukushima.

… Air samples obtained through the EPA's RadNet system have, to date, contained very small amounts of iodine, cesium, and tellurium, which are consistent with possible releases from the damaged Japanese reactors.
The largest amounts were found in samples from Alaska on March 19 and 24, 2011, but all of the radiation levels detected during the detailed filter analysis are hundreds of times below levels of concern.
Although Lisa Jackson promised that the levels would pose no risks, her account does not incorporate ramifications of four years of ongoing ocean contamination coupled with processes of bioaccumulation that concentrate the low levels of radionuclides found in water and soil at higher levels in flora and fauna.

Radiation contamination was detected in Alaskan life in 2011.
