In January and February alone, 1,450 malnourished or dying sea lion pups have washed up on shore – compared with just 68 in the same period last year.
“These are pups that should be nursing on their mothers,” said Dr. Shawn Johnson, director of the veterinary science department at The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito. “They’re (arriving) extremely emaciated. They have no energy stores. They’re just skin and bones, wasting away and on the brink of death.”
On San Miguel, where 20,000 sea lions are born each June, Melin said researchers believe “probably close to 10,000 are dead, and we expect more to die over coming months.” She said the mortality rate is similar on San Nicolas.

The crayfish and the sardines that these young ones MIGHT feed on while their mothers are away have DISAPPEARED, simply vanished, and no one knows why.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CIFA), which monitors food safety, says:
"Approximately 60 per cent of fish have shown to have detectable levels of radionuclides.".
In November, 2011, 65 per cent of the catches tested positive for cesium (a radioactive material created by nuclear reactors), according to a Montreal Gazette analysis of data on the fisheries agency's website.
"People want to know what's happening with the cesium and how much is in the fish, but we don't know. It's frustrating," said oceanographer Ken Buesseler, a senior scientist at the non-profit Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Woods Hole, Massachusetts .
In October, a U.S. study co-authored by Buesseler reported that Fukushima caused history's biggest-ever release of radiation into the ocean -- 10 to 100 times more than the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear catastrophe..
Buesseler has reported some results from a 15-day cruise last May and June.

VANCOUVER — Top bureaucrats in Ottawa have muzzled a leading fisheries scientist whose discovery could help explain why salmon stocks have been crashing off Canada's West Coast, according to documents obtained by Postmedia News.
The documents show the Privy Council Office, which supports the Prime Minister's Office, stopped Kristi Miller from talking about one of the most significant discoveries to come out of a federal fisheries lab in years.
Science, one of the world's top research journals, published Miller's findings in January. The journal considered the work so significant it notified "over 7,400" journalists worldwide about Miller's "Suffering Salmon" study.

Blue-footed diving seabirds called cassin's auklets, including this one, have been washing up dead by the thousands on beaches from San Francisco to central British Columbia.
The birds appear to be starving to death, so experts don't believe a toxin is the culprit.But why the birds can't find food is a mystery.

The Pacific Ocean appears to be dying, according to a new study recently published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Scientists from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) in California recently discovered that the number of dead sea creatures blanketing the floor of the Pacific is higher than it has ever been in the 24 years that monitoring has taken place, a phenomenon that the data suggests is a direct consequence of nuclear fallout from Fukushima.
"In the 24 years of this study, the past two years have been the biggest amounts of this detritus by far," stated Christine Huffard, a marine biologist at MBARI and leader of the study, to National Geographic.
The masses of dead sea plankton, jellyfish, feces and other oceanic matter that typically only cover about 1 percent of the ocean floor were found to now be covering about 98 percent of it -- and multiple other stations located throughout the Pacific have since reported similar figures.
"In March 2012, less than one percent of the seafloor beneath Station M was covered in dead sea salps," writes Carrie Arnold for National Geographic.
"By July 1, more than 98 percent of it was covered in the decomposing organisms. ... The major increase in activity of deep-sea life in 2011 and 2012 weren't limited to Station M, though: Other ocean-research stations reported similar data."

First signs of the cumulation effect could be cases of thyroid cancer among the children of irradiated parents. However, this is not yet certain.
