"Today, President Obama signed an Executive Order that seeks to coordinate efforts to prepare the Nation for space weather events.

The term “space weather” refers to effects on the space environment that arise from emissions from the sun, including solar flares, solar energetic particles, and coronal mass ejections. Space weather is a natural hazard that can significantly affect critical infrastructure essential to the economy, social wellbeing, and national security, such as electrical power, water supply, health care, and transportation.

These emissions can interact with Earth, potentially degrading, disrupting, or damaging the technology that forms the Nation’s backbone of critical infrastructure. Because it poses a significant risk to the Nation’s security, space weather is included in the Department of Homeland Security’s Strategic National Risk Assessment, which outlines threats that pose the greatest risk to the security of the Nation and that, therefore, the Nation must prepare for."

I ADMIT, I FIND IT DISCONCERTING, BUT WHEN, NOT IF, SUCH A CATASTROPHIC EVENT DOES TAKE PLACE, WE CAN DO NOTHING ABOUT  IT.

HOWEVER, WE CAN PERHAPS PREPARE OUR MINDS AND HEARTS FOR SUCH THINGS AND HAVE THE TIME TO CONSIDER, "WHAT IF?".

ON DECEMBER 27, 2004, EARTH WAS 'SHAKEN' BY A SOLAR EVENT UNLIKE ANY OTHER KNOWN TO MAN.

THE 'SHOCK WAVE' FROM A NEUTRON STAR, SGR 1806-20 IN THE AREA OF THE SAGITTARIUS CONSTELLATION, 50,000 LIGHT YEARS AWAY, HIT EARTH WITH MORE ENERGY THAN OUR SUN EMITS IN 150,000 YEARS, ACCORDING TO NASA.
(OTHER SOURCES STATE 250,000 YEARS, SO WHICH IS RIGHT? WE DON'T KNOW.)

IT RIPPED OFF A THIN 'TOP LAYER' OF OUR ATMOSPHERE.
THAT IS NOT CONDUCIVE TO OUR GLOBAL HEALTH.

WHO KNEW THIS?

YEAH, THAT'S WHAT ANGERED ME....IT WASN'T EVEN HINTED AT WHEN THEY MADE STUDIES OF IT AS IT WAS "INCOMING", NOR AFTERWARD, FOR A FULL TWO MONTHS ALMOST.

I REALLY DOUBT THAT NASA WOULD HAVE POSTED THE EVENT TO ITS WEBSITE HAD NOT OTHERS DONE SO OR BEEN ABOUT TO DO SO.

AFTER DECADES OF "FOLLOWING" NASA, IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THEY 'MENTION' THINGS THAT WE MAY FIND SHOCKING (LIKE "SOHO DOWN"), (LIKE ASTRONAUTS REPORTING UFOs) ONLY TO DISPEL WHAT OTHERS POST ABOUT SUCH THINGS.

NASA's TENDENCY TO DO THIS, LIKE 'POPULAR SCIENCE' DOES AS WELL, IS INFURIATING SOMETIMES WHEN FACTS OUTWEIGH "SPIN", AND THE CALMING POSTS TO SETTLE THE SHEEPFOLD, THE FAIRY TALES TO ASSUAGE "FEAR", JUST GET TO BE TOO MUCH.

TWO MONTHS PASSED AFTER THIS INCREDIBLE COSMIC EVENT, AND ONLY THEN WERE WE "INFORMED"OF IT, BUT WE WERE NEVER PROPERLY INFORMED PRIOR TO THE WAVE HITTING US, NOR HAVE WE BEEN INFORMED ABOUT WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN FUTURE SHOCK WAVES HIT OUR LITTLE BLUE MARBLE OF A PLANET, OR WHAT IT'S GOING TO DO TO OUR OWN STAR....THE SUN.

THAT AND A FEW OTHER NASA "REVELATIONS" ( MAINLY THE DENIAL OF THREATS BY 'NEAR EARTH OBJECTS') REALLY TICK ME OFF AND I WON'T APOLOGIZE FOR IT.

I AM WAY BEYOND SICK AND TIRED OF THE EXCUSE THAT NASA, OUR FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, ETC, DON'T, WON'T, AND HAVEN'T INTENDED TO REVEAL PERTINENT INFORMATION TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE VIA MAINSTREAM MEDIA BECAUSE IT "MIGHT CAUSE WIDESPREAD PANIC".

BACK TO 2004... A MAJOR EVENT FOR PLANET EARTH...

"NASA's newly launched (2004) Swift satellite and the NSF-funded Very Large Array (VLA) were two of many observatories that observed the event..."

"The next biggest flare ever seen from any soft gamma repeater was peanuts compared to this incredible December 27 event," said Gaensler. "Had this happened within 10 light years of us, it would have severely damaged our atmosphere. Fortunately, all the magnetars we know of are much farther away than this."

Amateur astronomers detected the disturbance in the Earth's ionosphere and relayed this information through the American Association of Variable Star Observers (http://www.aavso.org).

SGR 1806-20 is a "magnetar": a rapidly spinning neutron star that not only has an incredible density, trillions of times greater than than ordinary matter, but an incredibly strong magnetic field.

Tens of thousands of years ago, a "starquake" fractured the magnetar's surface.
The result was an explosive release of energy, which sent a pulse of gamma rays racing across the cosmos at the speed of light.

Behind them came the explosion's fireball, expanding in a lopsided fashion at roughly one-third the speed of light.

The gamma rays swept past the Earth on December 27, 2004, when they were detected by NASA's Swift satellite. That initial signal faded away within minutes. But then came a steady stream of radio waves from the fireball.

Astronomers rushed to ground-based radio telescopes such as NSF's Very Large Array outside Socorro, New Mexico, where they have been studying the information-rich signal ever since."

"On 2004 December 27, a giant flare was detected from magnetarSGR1806-20.
The initial spike was followed by a hard-X-ray tail persisting for 380 s with a modulation period of 7.56 seconds.

This event has received considerable attention, particularly in the astrophysics area. Its relevance to the geophysics community lies in the importance of investigating the effects of such an event on the near-Earth electromagnetic environment.

However, the signature of a magnetar flare on the geomagnetic field has not previously been investigated.

Here, by applying wavelet analysis to the high-resolution magnetic data provided by the CHAMP satellite, a modulated signal with a period of 7.5 seconds over the duration of the giant flare appears in the observed data.
Moreover, this event was detected by the energetic ion counters onboard the DEMETER satellite.

SGRs (soft γ-ray repeaters) are galactic X-ray stars that emit, during sporadic times of high activity, a large number of short–duration (around 0.1 per second) bursts of hard X-rays (Duncan & Thompson 1992).
A SGR is thought to be a magnetar, being a strongly magnetized neutron star powered by a very strong magnetic field (≥1015 Gauss).

On 2004 December 27 a powerful burst of X- and γ-rays from one of the most highly magnetized neutron stars (SGR 1806-20) of our Galaxy reached the Earth's environment (Hurley et al. 2005).

The Solar system received a shock, which is thought to be due to a cataclysm in the magnetar that caused it to emit as much energy in two-tenths of a second as the Sun gives off in 250 000 years (IS IT 150,000 OR 250,000 YEARS? WE MAY NEVER KNOW.) .

The signature of this event on the Earth's magnetic field has not previously been investigated.
[MY question: Why not? Because "Resistance is futile"?]

Here, we present the first results of the magnetar footprints on magnetic data recorded by near-Earth satellites.

The magnetar SGR 1806-20 is the third such event ever recorded along with two others that were noted in 1979 and 1998 (Mazets et al. 1979 ; Hurley et al. 1999 ).

Several properties of this magnetar flare are relevant to our study.

Firstly, a precursor of ~1 second was observed 142 seconds before the flare, with a roughly flat-topped profile (Hurley et al. 2005).

The intensity of the main initial spike saturated all X-and γ-ray detectors. However, particle detectors on board of RHESSI and Wind spacecraft (Boggs et al. 2004; Mazets et al. 2004) were able to record reliable measurements.

Several instruments designed for other purposes provided important information, as Geotail (Terasawa et al. 2005) and Cluster/Double star (Schwartz et al. 2005).

The first spike was followed by a tail lasting 380 s, during which 7.56 s pulsations were clearly observed, by the γ-ray detectors on board of RHESSI (Hurley et al. 2005).

Secondly, a disturbance of the Earth's ionosphere was simultaneously observed with the detection of the burst from SGR 1806-20 (Inan et al. 2005).

This sudden ionospheric disturbance (SID) was recorded as a change in the signal strength from very low-frequency (VLF) radio transmitters, being noticed by stations around the globe (Campbell et al. 2005).

These changes in the radio signal strength were caused by X-rays arriving from SGR 1806-20, which ionized the upper atmosphere and modified the radio propagation properties of the Earth's ionosphere (see clearing house of SID data associated with SGR 1806-20 flare . )

One such observation of this ionospheric signature resides within a 21.4 kHz signal that originates in Hawaii and propagates along an ionosphere wave guide to Palmer Station, Antarctica (Inan et al. 2005).

This wave guide is some ~10 000 km in path length (Inan et al. 2005).
As explained above, this is not a direct radio detection of SGR 1806-20.

Previously, at least four other transient, high-energy sources have produced detectable ionospheric disturbances, as measured with VLF receivers: GRB030329 (Price et. al, IBVS #5415, 2003); GRB830801 (Fishman and Inan, Nature v.331, p.418, 1988); XRF 020427 (GCN 1394), and the Aug. 27, 1998 super-flare from SGR 1900+14 (Inan, et al., Geophys. Res. Lett., v.26, p.3357, 1999).]


Moreover, due to the sub-burst longitude and latitude (Inan et al
. 2005) and to the geographical distribution of LF/VLF beacons and monitoring stations, this burst was not detected by active monitoring stations in Germany, Australia, or Canada (Campbell et al. 2005).


Here,we note that ionospheric disturbances were also reported in the case of the magnetar observed in 1998 (Inan et al. 1999). In the case of the 1998 magnetar the flare illuminated the night side of the Earth and ionized the lower ionosphere to levels usually found only during daytime.

The magnetar responsible for the 2004 burst was about the same distance as the magnetar responsible for the 1998 burst, but within 5.25° of the Sun as viewed from Earth.
Therefore its γ -rays arrived on the day side of our planet.

[HERE COMES THE "REALLY BIG NEWSFLASH.]

The 2004 flare changed the ionic density at an altitude of 60 km by six orders of magnitude (Inan 2006). It is thus plausible that this change in the ionospheric conductivity can cause oscillating perturbations in the current-generated magnetic field.

[YEAH, IT CHANGED IT FOR ALL TIME...IT IS NOT THE SAME NOW AS BEFORE THE WAVE HIT EARTH. A LOT OF THINGS CHANGED THAT DAY, ACTUALLY.]

"Using NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and other X-ray observatories, astronomers have found evidence for what is likely one of the most extreme pulsars, or rotating neutron stars, ever detected. The source exhibits properties of a highly magnetized neutron star, or magnetar, yet its deduced spin period is thousands of times longer than any pulsar ever observed.

On June 22, 2016, an instrument aboard NASA’s Swift telescope captured the release of a short burst of X-rays from 1E 1613.
The Swift detection caught astronomers’ attention because the source exhibited intense, extremely rapid fluctuations on a time scale of milliseconds, similar to other known magnetars.
These exotic objects possess the most powerful magnetic fields in the Universe –trillions of times that observed on the Sun – and can erupt with enormous amounts of energy."  


A paper describing the findings of D'Aì's team has been accepted for publication by Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society and is also available online.


NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC POSTED A ROSY LITTLE ARTICLE ABOUT A MYSTERIOUS SERIES OF RADIO BLASTS THAT HIT EARTH IN 2012 TO 2015

"In November 2012, a powerful blast of radio waves hit the Earth. This event—called a fast radio burst—intrigued scientists with its extreme energy, faraway origin, and seeming lack of clues about whatever mysterious astrophysical engine had blasted the waves into space.


But unlike the few fast radio bursts that had been observed before, this one was destined to be more than a one-hit wonder.
In early 2015, another blast of radio waves was fired by the same unknown engine. And another. And then another, and another, until finally, over a period of three hours, a total of ten additional bursts emerged from the same location on the sky.
It’s the first time astronomers have caught a fast radio burst in the act of repeating, and—as reported this week in Nature—the observations provide crucial clues about the origin of these bursts, which have stumped astronomers for nearly a decade.

Until now, fast radio bursts were generally thought to be the result of cataclysmic, one-time astrophysical events such as supernovas, stars collapsing into black holes, or colliding stars.
That’s because no one had ever seen a burst go off more than once.
But if the same source continues firing radio waves into space, that rules out a bunch of ideas.
It’s not like a supernova can put the band back together and go on a revival tour."

"The team hopes to use Hubble to conduct further observations of the V Hydrae system, including the most recent blob ejected in 2011. The astronomers also plan to use the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile to study blobs launched over the past few hundred years that are now too cool to be detected with Hubble.

The team's results appeared in the August 20, 2016, issue of The Astrophysical Journal."

Following the declarations of the sacredness of Mount Graham by the Apache Survival Coalition and the San Carlos Apache Tribe, the Vatican in 1991declared that Mt. Graham was not sacred because it lacked religious shrines."

"Lucifer is part of the Large Binocular Telescope, which happens to be right next to the Vatican Observatory on Mt. Graham in Tucson. That's right, the Vatican has an observatory in Arizona, manned by Jesuit astronomers. Now its next-door neighbor is named for the Devil."

SOME SCIENTISTS HAVE WONDERED IF THE SHOCKWAVE WE GOT IN 2004 COULD HAVE POSSIBLY HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH THAT HISTORICALLY HUGE TSUNAMI THAT DEVASTATED THAILAND, SUMATRA, SRI LANKA ON ABOUT THE SAME DAY BACK IN 2004.

AGAIN, WE RUN UP AGAINST THAT "SCIENTIFIC THEORY" WHEN WE SIMPLY MUST WONDER WHO'S THEORY IS CORRECT.

WAS THIS RELATED TO THE SHOCKWAVE OR NOT?

"It was 7:58 a.m. Dec. 26, 2004, when the tremendous quake struck beneath the Indian Ocean 160 miles west of Sumatra.

Not only did it register at approximately a 9.3 magnitude (only the 1960 Chile earthquake measured higher at 9.5, though there may have been stronger tremors prior to the invention of seismographic equipment) and last nearly 10 minutes, the quake moved a full 750 miles of underwater fault line earth up to 40 feet.

The movement of the earth–there is evidence that huge boulders weighing thousands of tons were pushed several miles along the ocean floor–caused a massive displacement of water. It is estimated that the resulting tsunami had two times the energy of all the bombs used during World War II.

Within 15 minutes, tsunami waves were crashing the coast of Sumatra. At the north end of the island was a heavily populated region known as Aceh. There, waves reached 80 feet high over large stretches of the coast and up to 100 feet in some places.
Entire communities were simply swept away by the water in a matter of minutes.

The death toll in Indonesia is estimated at between 130,000 and 160,000 people, with an additional 500,000 people left homeless. About a third of the victims were children.

One year prior to this earthquake and tsunami, almost to the hour, a 6.6-magnitude quake rocked Bam, Iran, killing 30,000 people.

'ROGUE STAR' ON HIGH-SPEED TRAJECTORY THROUGH MILKY WAY
An international team led by astronomers from Queen's University Belfast has identified the fastest ever star on an escape trajectory from the Milky Way – the white dwarf US708, which is traveling at a staggering 1,200 km per sec (746 miles per sec).
