GAMMA RAY BURST COULD CAUSE EXTINCTION ON EARTH

THE MOST POWERFUL BLASTS KNOWN TO REACH EARTH AND THEY ARE DETECTED AT LEAST ONCE A DAY. A 'CLOSE', EARTH-FACING GAMMA BURST WOULD EASILY CAUSE EITHER A RAPID OR A SLOW EXTINCTION OF LIFE ON OUR PLANET.

AS OF 4:44 AM, CDST, JULY 27, 2017, what was ASSUMED to be one of the brightest gamma-ray bursts ever observed was also thought to be aimed directly at Earth from the nearby Andromeda Galaxy.
Some major medfia like Newsweek took the report and ran with it.

This would have been called a CLOSE Gama Ray Burst (CGRB), "close" even though such a burst would have taken about 2 1/2 million years to reach us.

When the first excited reports were made public, before this was "officially" confirmed as a GRB, several media articles reported that this would be the closest such burst to date.
IF this had been a GRB, Earth would have been hit by gravitational waves, which would prove this was a GRB.
Quite unfortunately, the best detector for observing gravitational waves is not currently online. The U.S.' only such detector of that type event, which should have been online to record this, the 'Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory' (LIGO), is currently being upgraded.

All is not lost, however, as neutrino detectors, such as Antarctica’s IceCube detector should have been able to record resulting neutrinos from a GRB this 'close'.

THIS TIME, IT WASN'T WHAT WAS EXPECTED AND INITIALLY REPORTED.
With apologies, Phil Evans from the Swift team clarified that usually such false positives are weeded out and the public never made aware of them because they (obviously) don’t get reported when Swift doesn’t find an afterglow.
However, he explained, this time a false trigger coincidentally lined up with an actual X-ray source, and we didn’t have access to the data to re-analyze. As a result, astronomers had to work with only the Swift report."You’ve been given a brief insight into the decisions and challenges we have to face daily. So while it’s a bit embarrassing to have to show you one of the times where we got it wrong, it’s also good to show you the reality of science. For every exciting news-worthy discovery, there’s a lot of hard graft, effort, false alarms, mistakes, excitement and disappointment. It’s what we live off. It’s science," Evans said.

WHY DID THE INTERNET 'BLOW UP' FROM SUCH AN ANNOUNCEMENT?
BECAUSE GRBs CAN BE AND PROBABLY HAVE BEEN THE REASON FOR AT LEAST ONE EXTINCTION EVENT ON OUR WEE BLUE MARBLE OF A PLANET.

BECAUSE GRBs CAN WIPE OUT EVERYTHING IN THEIR DIRECT PATH, AND BECAUSE A GRB RECENTLY STRIPPED AWAY PART OF OUR OWN ATMOSPHERE, AS I REPORTED IN A BLOG ENTRY <HERE>.

NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope first detected the gamma-ray emission from GRB160625B.
Soon afterward, the ground-based MASTER-IAC telescope, a part of Russia's MASTER robotic telescope network located at the Teide Observatory in Spain's Canary Islands, followed up with optical light observations while the prompt phase was still active.

MASTER-IAC gathered critical data on the proportion of polarized optical light relative to the total light produced by the prompt phase. Because synchrotron radiation is one of only a limited number of phenomena that can create polarized light, these data provided the crucial link between synchrotron radiation and the prompt phase of GRB160625B.

A magnetic field can also influence how much polarized light is emitted as time passes and the burst evolves. Because the researchers were able to analyze polarization data that spanned nearly the entire time-frame of the burst -- a rare achievement -- they were able to discern the presence of a magnetic field and track how it changed as GRB160625B progressed.

"There is very little data on polarized emission from gamma-ray bursts," said Kutyrev, who is also an associate scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. "This burst was unique because we caught the polarization state at an early stage. This is hard to do because it requires a very fast reaction time and there are relatively few telescopes with this capability.
This paper shows how much can be done, but to get results like this consistently, we will need new rapid-response facilities for observing gamma-ray bursts."

GRBs, ALONG WITH THEIR GRAVITY WAVE SHOCKS, ARE BECOMING A "MAJOR BIG DEAL", BUT WHO WILL FUND THE NECESSARY INSTRUMENTS AND TEAMS TO STUDY THEM AND PERHAPS COME UP WITH SOME SORT OF EARLY WARNING SYSTEM?
THEY ARE CURRENTLY NOT PREDICTABLE IN LENGTH OR IN ANY OTHER WAY.

Dying Supergiant Stars Implicated in Hours-long Gamma-Ray Bursts
APRIL 16, 2013
NASA
"Three unusually long-lasting stellar explosions discovered by NASA's Swift satellite represent a previously unrecognized class of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Two international teams of astronomers studying these events conclude that they likely arose from the catastrophic death of supergiant stars hundreds of times larger than the sun

Two NASA satellites that monitor the sky for such phenomena, the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope and the Swift Gamma-Ray Burst Mission, detected the GRB event. These telescopes slewed quickly to the location of the burst to make observations and also immediately relayed the GRB’s position to several automated ground-based telescopes, which then began their observations."

The GRB FROM magnetar SGR 1806-20 reported in 2005 (happened in 2004) was the third such event ever recorded along with two others that were noted in 1979 and 1998 (Mazets et al. 1979 ; Hurley et al. 1999 ).

THE SWIFT MISSION WAS LAUNCHED IN 2004.

Dec. 17, 2004: Swift's first burst, in Crater, is eight-second-long GRB 041217.

BY 2015, IT HAD IDENTIFIED 1000 GAMMA RAY BURSTS, SOME OF LONG DURATION, SOME SHORT.
FROM 3 EVENTS TO 1,000 IN 10 YEARS.
IMAGINE WHAT WE MISSED BEFORE WE COULD IDENTIFY THEM.

SINCE 2015?
WELL, SWIFT (NSA) HASN'T UPDATED THE SWIFT WEBSITE SINCE 2012, AND THE LAST ENTRY THERE WAS TO ANNOUNCE THEIR 1000th FIND OF A GRB IN OCTOBER, 2015, BUT THEY "ESTIMATED" THEY WERE FINDING ABOUT 90 GRBs PER YEAR.

BUT IN OTHER PLACES, LIKE AFTER THEY FOUND THEIR 500th GRB, SWIFT STATED THEY WERE FINDING 1 OR 2 PER DAY!
IN A BOOK PUBLISHED IN 2015 THEY ALSO STATED "AT LEAST ONE PER DAY".

NASA OFFERS THIS DISCLAIMER ON THE OUTDATED SWIFT SITE:
Disclaimer: This material is being kept online for historical purposes. Though accurate at the time of publication, it is no longer being updated. The page may contain broken links or outdated information, and parts may not function in current web browsers.

I HAVE TO WONDER WHY SOMETHING THIS IMPORTANT IS NOT UPDATED DAILY ON AN EASY-TO-FIND WEBSITE APART FROM THE HUGE NASA MAIN SITE.

WHERE ARE THE COLLECTED DATA AND HOW CAN WE ACCESS THAT?
THE FOLLOWING ARTICLES TELL US HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO KNOW.

Supernovae and Gamma-Ray Bursts: The Greatest Explosions Since the Big Bang

FROM NASA

"All this goes to show that the Earth does not exist in splendid isolation," says Inan. "We now know that the Earth's physical environment is affected not only by our own sun but by energy originating from distant parts of our universe."

Cosmic energy burst disturbs Earth's atmosphere
Sept. 29, 1998: On the night of August 27th Earth's upper atmosphere was bathed briefly by an invisible burst of gamma- and X-ray radiation. This pulse - the most powerful to strike Earth from beyond the solar system ever detected - had a significant effect on Earth's upper atmosphere, report Stanford researchers. It is the first time that a significant change in Earth's environment has been traced to energy from a distant star.

"It was as if night was briefly turned into day in the ionosphere," says Umran Inan, professor of electrical engineering at Stanford and head of the research group that observed the atmospheric disturbance. The ionosphere is the portion of the atmosphere between 60 to 80 kilometers in altitude that plays an important role in radio communications.
So it is quite likely that the range of high-powered radio stations, which usually reach much farther at night due to lower ionospheric activity levels, was suddenly reduced to their lower, daytime ranges during the burst's five-minute duration, he says.

The characteristics of the unusual gamma-ray burst, the nature of the unusual X-ray star that appears to be its source, and the dramatic effect that it had on the ionosphere are the subjects of a National Aeronautics and Space Agency space science update being held on Tuesday, Sept. 29, at 2 p.m. ET at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Kevin Hurley at University of California-Berkeley has used satellite information to calculate the total energy that an X-ray star, called SGR 1900+14, must have released to produce the August 27 burst. He calculates that, if the energy could be harnessed, it would be enough to power all of human civilization on Earth for a billion billion years. Of course, only a tiny fraction of this energy reached Earth.

According to space agency scientists, the radiation reaching Earth had an intensity slightly less than that of a dental X-ray. Both gamma rays and X-rays cause ionization directly, by stripping electrons from atoms and leaving them electrically charged. Nevertheless, the burst had a remarkable impact on the ionosphere.

"It is amazing that such a burst could produce ionization levels similar to those produced by all the radiation coming from the sun," Inan says. "When we put this information into our mathematical models it may provide us with important new insights about how the ionosphere behaves in response to sudden ionization changes."

WAIT! THEY WANT US TO ACCEPT THAT RADIATION LEVELS LESS THAN A DENTAL X-RAY DESTROYED PART OF OUR UPPER ATMOSPHERE, YET IS MORE POWERFUL THAN ALL THE RADIATION COMING FROM THE SUN SINCE IT HAS BEEN SHINING DOWN ON US?

WHAT?!?!
THIS DOES NOT MAKE LOGICAL SENSE, DOES IT?

SINCE SUCH A COSMIC BURST AS THIS
, CALLED THE "MOST POWERFUL IN THE UNIVERSE", CARRIES MORE RADIATION THAN THE SUN HAS EMITTED IN ITS LIFETIME, RIPPED LOOSE SOME OF OUR IONOSPHERE, "BATHED EARTH IN LESS RADIATION THAN A DENTAL X-RAY", WHY THEN DON'T DENTAL X-RAYS DESTROY THE PLANET, SINCE THEY ARE SAID TO BE "MORE POWERFUL" THAN A GAMMA RAY BURST IN THAT ARTICLE?

IF A GRB WITH "LESS RADIATION THAN A DENTAL X-RAY" CAN CAUSE MASS EXTINCTION ON EARTH AND ALL POINTS FROM ITS ORIGIN, WHAT THE HELL IS SOMETHING LIKE FUKUSHIMA CAUSING ?
THE BURST KNOWN AS
GRB160625B WAS MORE POWERFUL THAN THE SUN.
THE SUN FRIES HUMAN SKIN IF WE STAY OUT IN IT TOO LONG, CAN  HEAT THE EARTH TO TEMPERATURES OVER 100 DEGREES FROM 93 MILLION MILES AWAY, WHOSE RAYS CAN BE HARNESSED TO POWER CITIES, COOK MEAT, RUN MACHINERY, BUT THIS GRB, ALL GRBs ARE MORE POWERFUL BY FAR AND YET DO NOTHING TO EARTH TO SPEAK OF, IF WE ACCEPT WHAT THAT JUST STATED???

WHAT AM I MISSING HERE?
"LESS THAN A DENTAL X-RAY" BUT "MORE POWERFUL THAN THE SUN"?

MY MIND WON'T WRAP AROUND THAT.

The nature and intensity of the Aug. 27 gamma ray burst supports the theory that SGR 1900+14 is an exotic object called a magnetar predicted by Robert Duncan of the University of Texas-Austin and Christopher Thompson of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

A magnetar is a special kind of neutron star. A neutron star is the collapsed core that is left behind when a massive star explodes.
It is extremely dense, weighing more than the sun but squeezed into a ball less than 12 miles in diameter.
A magnetar differs from an ordinary neutron star by possessing a magnetic field far greater than any other object known. Its field would be so intense that a steady X-ray glow would emanate from its surface and periodic starquakes would produce bursts of gamma rays and occasional cataclysmic flares like the one observed on August 27.

"All GRBs observed to date have occurred well outside the Milky Way galaxy and have been harmless to Earth. However, if a GRB were to occur within the Milky Way and its emission were beamed straight towards Earth, the effects could be harmful and potentially devastating for the ecosystems. Currently, orbiting satellites detect on average approximately one GRB per day.

The closest observed GRB as of March 2014 was GRB 980425, located 40 megaparsecs (130,000,000 ly) away (z=0.0085) in an SBc-type dwarf galaxy.

GRB 980425 was far less energetic than the average GRB and was associated with the Type Ib supernova SN 1998bw.

A GRB AIMED DIRECTLY AT EARTH FROM A NEARER SOURCE WOULD VERY QUICKLY EVISCERATE OUR EARTH'S PROTECTIVE OZONE LAYER.

IN THE ABOVE-LINKED ARTICLE, NASA STATES THAT A GRB COULD HAVE WIPED OUT ANY ALIEN LIFE WE MIGHT HAVE FOUND ON OTHER PLANETS.

BUT WHEN ONE HITS EARTH, IT'S NOT AS BAD AS A DENTAL X-RAY?

SORRY, I JUST CAN'T GET OVER THAT PHRASE.

BTW, FROM 2010, "
A leading researcher of dental radiation has found that depending on the model and setting, cone-beam scanners emit 4 to 30 times as much as a conventional dental X-ray."

BUT BACK TO GAMMA BURSTS...
Lead author Dr Eleonora Troja, of the University of Maryland, said: “Gamma-ray bursts are catastrophic events, related to the explosion of massive stars 50 times the size of our sun.
“If you ranked all the explosions in the universe based on their power, GRBs would be right behind the Big Bang.

“In a matter of seconds, the process can emit as much energy as a star the size of our Sun would in its entire lifetime.”

The main characteristic times of the flare from SGR 1806-20, that is, the precursor (142 seconds before the flare), outburst, and the end of the modulated signal (380 seconds after the flare), are marked with yellow, red and green circles, respectively.

From top to bottom, wavelet power spectra of north (X), east (Y) and vertical downward (Z) components of the magnetic field are shown. Longitude and local time (LT) are given at the beginning of the considered time interval.

Strong random fluctuations in all three components can be seen at almost all frequency ranges and for the largest part of the time interval presented here. The variation of satellite latitude with time is given in the fourth panel.

Gamma ray bursts (GRBs) are the brightest electromagnetic blasts known to occur in the Universe, and can originate from the collapse of the most massive types of stars or from the collision of two neutron stars. Supernovae are stellar explosions that also can send harmful radiation hurtling towards Earth. Both GRBs and supernovae are usually observed in distant galaxies, but can pose a threat if they occur closer to home, where they can strip the Earth’s upper atmosphere of its protective ozone layer leaving life exposed to harmful ultraviolet radiation from the Sun.

A new paper, titled “Ground-Level Ozone Following Astrophysical Ionizing Radiation Events – An Additional Biological Hazard?” published in the journal Astrobiology took a look at the ramifications of a nearby GRB or supernova and the effects on life. The research was funded by the Exobiology and Evolutionary Biology element of the NASA Astrobiology Program.

GRB 020813 was a gamma-ray burst (GRB) that was detected on 13 August 2002 at 02:44 UTC. A gamma-ray burst is a highly luminous flash associated with an explosion in a distant galaxy and producing gamma rays, the most energetic form of electromagnetic radiation.

GRB 020813 was detected by multiple instruments on the High Energy Transient Explorer. The burst lasted approximately 125 seconds. The initial position was estimated to be at a right ascension of 19h 46m 38s and a declination of −19° 35′ 16″.

In less than two hours after the burst had been detected, optical observations of the region were made with the Katzman Automatic Imaging Telescope which reveal the burst's optical afterglow.
(Source: Li, Weidong (13 August 2002). "GRB020813: optical afterglow". GCN Circulars. 1473.)

In the days following the event, observations were made by the Chandra X-ray Observatory, which detected a fading X-ray afterglow. The redshift for this event was approximately z = 1.254.

BTW, when thinking about how far and how fast this gamma burst traveled, light travels at "the speed of light" which has been measured to be about 300,000 km/s (kilometers per second) or 186,000 m/s (miles per second) in empty space.
Doing the math, a Light-year is 9.46 trillion km, or 5.88 trillion miles. Trillion is 10^12.
There is not much to collide with in empty space, so light travels fastest in empty space.

Why does light travel at JUST 300,000 km/s and no faster?
That's a tougher question...it does link in to other physics...but mainly, like so many other things,  scientists don't know, they just measure it.

ESO Telescopes Observe Swift Satellite’s 1000th Gamma-ray Burst

Long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs)
GRBs are named after the date on which they are discovered: the first two digits being the year, followed by the two-digit month and two-digit day and a letter with the order they were detected during that day. The letter 'A' is appended to the name for the first burst identified, 'B' for the second, and so on. For bursts before the year 2010 this letter was only appended if more than one burst occurred that day.

The duration of a burst is typically measured by T90, the duration of the period which 90 percent of the burst's energy is emitted. Recently some otherwise "short" GRBs have been shown to be followed by a second, much longer emission episode that when included in the burst light curve results in T90 durations of up to several minutes: these events are only short in the literal sense when this component is excluded.
This category is for gamma-ray bursts with duration greater than two seconds.

Effects of Gamma Ray Bursts in Earth’s Biosphere

WHEN I READ SUCH ARTICLES FROM NASA AND OTHERS ABOUT THINGS FEW ARE AWARE OF THAT THREATEN US FROM "OUT THERE", OTHER THINGS LIKE WHO WINS AN ELECTION, WHO HAS THE MOST MONEY, WHICH COUNTRY HAS MORE NUKES SORT OF PALE IN COMPARISON.
OUR EARTH IS A FRAGILE LITTLE 'SPACESHIP' AND WE'RE ALL ALONG FOR THE RIDE.

THE SIXTH MASS EXTINCTION. ARE HUMANS NEXT?

Since 1900, 69 mammal species and 400 other vertebrate species have gone extinct.

Based on previous extinctions, only nine species would have been expected to die off in the same time frame without the involvement of mankind.

"Era of ‘Biological Annihilation’ Is Underway"
Ongoing 6th Mass Extinction.

New York Times
JULY 11, 2017

From the common barn swallow to the exotic giraffe, thousands of animal species are in precipitous decline, a sign that an irreversible era of mass extinction is underway, new research finds.
The study found that about 30 percent of all land vertebrates — mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians — are experiencing declines and local population losses.
In most parts of the world, mammal populations are losing 70 percent of their members because of habitat loss.

The study, published July 10 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, calls the current decline in animal populations a “global epidemic” and part of the “ongoing sixth mass extinction” caused in large measure by human destruction of animal habitats. The previous five extinctions were caused by natural phenomena.

Gerardo Ceballos, a researcher at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México in Mexico City, acknowledged that the study is written in unusually alarming tones for an academic research paper. “It wouldn’t be ethical right now not to speak in this strong language to call attention to the severity of the problem,” he said.

Britain has one on invertebrates that have gone extinct in the past 100 years... wasps, bees, moths, butterflies, dragon-/damsel-flies, beetles...

We can say "Oh, well, it's just bugs", "just birds", "just fish", "just snakes and frogs", etc, but the demise of each species had an effect on other species.
It's rather like dominoes set up to fall.
Each species occupies a slot in an entire community, each community is part of a region, each region is part of the world.
Like it or not, whether we want to accept it or not, THERE IS AN ECOSYSTEM.

My grandfather, younger uncle, two cousins and I were fishing for bream one hot early summer's day and each fish that was added to the stringers was noted aloud by grandfather, who was not fishing.
For those who don't know, bream are a fairly small fish, plentiful back then in ponds all over the deep South. During certain times of the year, one could even catch them by making little balls of slightly moistened stale bread to place on the hook.
There would be six adults and five children for dinner that night.
When we reached exactly 77 fish, grandfather said, "Time to go clean fish."
Only the youngest among us pleaded for "just a few more minutes".
My grandfather took that one's small hand in his and began the lesson anew that we had all learned from him.
"Did you see how hard the fish fought to get off your hook?" he asked.
"Did you see how they still tried to get away when we put them on the stringers?"
"They wanted to live. They wanted to stay here and not be caught, but we caught them because we're hungry. Now, we have enough to eat. We won't take more than that so the others out there can live. If they live, next time we are hungry, maybe the ones we leave will have had babies who grow up like these and there will be enough fish for us to eat again."

Now, as he first removed each fish's head before scaling them, my grandfather thanked the fish for their lives, for helping us to live by their deaths. He thanked them with ancient words, spoken for centuries after centuries, the same giving of thanks used by his father, and his father's father, and his.
One was mindful of what it took to live.
He did the same thing when he killed anything we ate, even when he picked vegetables from the garden, took wild food of any kind from the land around him.

We were taught to leave a seed of some kind in the ground when we took a plant, and only took every third one until we had enough. During hard times, people left a pebble or a bead where the roots had been, if they had some, a promise for a seed when we had extra again.
It was a very solemn time of reflection when people ate back then.
To this day, I talk to my food.

Nothing escaped grandfather's attention when it came to life and death.
He admired dragonflies very much.
One day we were gathering kindling wood from the edge of the woods when we came upon a large spider web in which was trapped a small dragonfly.
My grandpa stopped and stared and my eyes followed his.
As the spider approached for the kill, the pretty little dragonfly struggled, trying to break free.
I reached out to free the little thing, but grandpa gently took me by the wrist to stop me. He shook his head, no.
As the spider wrapped its prey into a cocoon of silk, my grandpa sadly shook his head and let go my wrist.
"Spiders have to eat, too," he said. "That's how life goes on. I wish we could all live on just air and sunshine."

As the most fragile go, so go we all, eventually.
Humans tend to ignore all that are beneath them on the tree of life.
The lower 'branches' become less and less important to most, with only that top branch being what counts.
Seems like everything else must be relegated to 'prey', or to being a "natural resource", unwisely spent.

HUMAN SPIDERS
The eugenics crowd sees most humans the same way that spider saw that dragonfly, people of earth.
As our numbers have grown, some also see most of us as weeds that need pulling up and tossing on a fire, or as pests who need eradicating.
Perhaps that seems harsh to you, but it is merely a fact of this present life.

We may well be at the top of the food chain, but just as in real life, VULTURES hover overhead, above ALL the branches on that old tree of life.
Webs are slung between the branches.
Some see the slots we "average citizens" fill here on earth as overcrowded and unnecessary in their private world, a world few of us live in.

When one doesn't respect ALL life, when one cannot relate to other races, other cultures, other values and see only a specific "species" as rightful "king", we are all in danger of extinction.

When we look at "terrorists" and see their desire to erase most of us from the face of the earth, why can we not also look at the powerful of earth and see that they do not intend to befriend and nourish and sustain any but those most like themselves?
History shows us this again and again.
The power-hungry don't stop wanting more power, just as the spider doesn't just eat dragonflies.

If George Orwell's books "Animal Farm" and "1984" don't convince people of this fact, maybe Ayn Rand's book "Atlas Shrugged" might?
In Atlas Shrugged, those whose innovations and wealth and abilities ran the world withdrew from the world, ready to sit back and watch society collapse, believing that they alone had the means to rebuild society to suit them.

We can look back in time and see an extinction event for most of the human population being planned thousands of years ago by invading hordes led by men who intended to eradicate millions.
Genocide is a common thing in today's world as well.

We can look at Indigenous populations all over earth who "got in the way" of the "movers and shakers" and were swept aside, out of the way.

We can look at the indigenous wildlife of every nation on earth and see many of them pushed to the brink of extinction, so then how can we not see that happening to US, as WE get in the way of the plans of others?

I have seen seven decades of life and, with this current state of health, may not see another decade, or another year, so it becomes more and more important to me to do now what my grandfather would not allow me to do that day of the spider versus the small dragonfly.
I still want to see the young dragonfly get another chance.

Human extinction risks: people are more likely to die in an extinction event than a car crash.

THE MOST LIKELY GLOBAL CATACLYSMS AS EXTINCTION EVENTS:
-Nuclear war.
-Cataclysmic weather events like hurricanes.
-Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis and similar events.
-Famines, loss of water supplies caused by a change in the normal climate.
-Pandemics that kill tens of millions.

These are the most viable threats to globally organized civilization.
Then there are what the Obama administration called space weather events: solar flares, asteroid strikes, etc.

All are the stuff of nightmares and blockbuster movies—but unlike sea monsters or zombie viruses, they’re real, part of the calculus that political leaders consider everyday.
According to a new report from the U.K.-based Global Challenges Foundation, they’re much more likely than we might think.

In its annual report on “global catastrophic risk,” the nonprofit debuted a startling statistic: Across the span of their lives, the average American is more than five times likelier to die during a human-extinction event than in a car crash. Partly that’s because the average person will probably not die in an automobile accident.
Every year, one in 9,395 people die in a crash; that translates to about a 0.01 percent chance per year. But that chance compounds over the course of a lifetime. At life-long scales, one in 120 Americans die in an accident.

The Stern Review, the U.K. government’s premier report on the economics of climate change, estimated a 0.1 percent risk of human extinction every year. That may sound low, but it also adds up when extrapolated to century-scale.
The U.K. group estimates a 9.5 percent chance of human extinction within the next hundred years.
The Black Death of the 1340s felled more than 10 percent of the world population.
Eight centuries prior, another epidemic of the Yersinia pestis bacterium—the “Great Plague of Justinian” in 541 and 542—killed between 25 and 33 million people, or between 13 and 17 percent of the global population at that time.
The Spanish flu epidemic of the late 1910s, which killed between 2.5 and 5 percent of the world’s people, approached the medieval plagues.

December 2015 – SPACE –
Mankind may only have a brief window to set foot on Mars before a disaster such as a third World War makes it no longer possible, Elon Musk has warned. The founder of SpaceX, which was the first private company to resupply the International Space Station, fears such a war could set back technological advancements. His company is preparing to announce its ambitious plans for rocket and spacecraft technology to carry humans to the red planet.
Speaking in an interview with GQ, he said such a mission may be important to help ensure the long term survival of mankind.

-- A PREDICTION FROM THE NOT-TOO-DISTANT PAST:

There will be a stronger and stronger demand that some board or some single individual should be given power to act on their own responsibility.
The cry for an economic dictator is a characteristic stage in the movement toward planning.
Thus the legislative body will be reduced to choosing the persons who are to have practically absolute power.
The whole system will tend toward that kind of dictatorship in which the head of the government is position by popular vote, but where he has all the powers at his command to make certain that the vote will go in the direction he desires.

Planning for the masses leads to dictatorship because dictatorship is the most effective instrument of coercion and, as such, essential if central planning on a large scale is to be possible. There is no justification for the widespread belief that, so long as power is conferred by democratic procedure, it cannot be arbitrary; it is not the source of power which prevents it from being arbitrary; to be free from dictatorial qualities, the power must also be limited. A true "dictatorship of the proletariat," even if democratic in form, if it undertook centrally to direct the economic system, would probably destroy personal freedom as completely as any autocracy has ever done.

Individual freedom cannot be reconciled with the supremacy of one single purpose to which the whole of society is permanently subordinated. To a limited extent we ourselves experience this fact in wartime, when subordination of almost everything to the immediate and pressing need is the price at which we preserve our freedom in the long run. The fashionable phrases about doing for the purposes of peace what we have learned.to do for the purposes of war are completely misleading, for it is sensible temporarily to sacrifice freedom in order to make it more secure in the future, but it is quite a different thing to sacrifice liberty permanently in the interests of a planned economy.

“The “social goal,” or “common purpose,” for which society is to be organized is usually vaguely described as the “common good,” the “general welfare,” or the “general interest.” It does not need much reflection to see that these terms have no sufficiently definite meaning to determine a particular course of action. The welfare and the happiness of millions cannot be measured on a single scale of less and more.

"Democracy extends the sphere of individual freedom," de Tocqueville said.
"Democracy attaches all possible value to each man," he said in 1848, "while socialism makes each man a mere agent, a mere number. Democracy and socialism have nothing in common but one word: equality. But notice the difference: while democracy seeks equality in liberty, socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude."

To allay these suspicions and to harness to its cart the strongest of all political motives—the craving for freedom — socialists began increasingly to make use of the promise of a "new freedom." Socialism was to bring "economic freedom," without which political freedom was "not worth having."

To make this socialist argument sound plausible, the word "freedom" was subjected to a subtle change in meaning. The word had formerly meant freedom from coercion, from the arbitrary power of other men. Now it was made to mean freedom from necessity, release from the compulsion of the circumstances which inevitably limit the range of choice of all of us. Freedom in this sense is, of course, merely another name for power or wealth. The demand for the new freedom was thus only another name for the old demand for a redistribution of wealth.

As the writer Peter Drucker expressed it in 1939, "the complete collapse of the belief in the attainability of freedom and equality through Marxism has forced Russia to travel the same road toward a totalitarian society of un-freedom and inequality which Germany has been following. Not that communism and fascism are essentially the same. Fascism is the stage reached after communism has proved an illusion, and it has proved as much an illusion in Russia as in pre-Hitler Germany."

No less significant is the intellectual outlook of the rank and file in the communist and fascist movements in Germany before 1933. The relative ease with which a young communist could be converted into a Nazi or vice versa was well known, best of all to the propagandists of the two parties. The communists and Nazis clashed more frequently with each other than with other parties simply because they competed for the same type of mind and reserved for each other the hatred of the heretic.

--SETTING UP THE NEW UTOPIA...
In the book 'The Assassination of New York', the deindustrialization of the city—more than 700,000 manufacturing jobs, two-thirds of the total, disappeared between 1950 and 1990, a period when national factory employment rose by more than a third—wasn’t merely the product of “outside forces” like globalization and technological change. It was planned, via the influence of the RPA and other entities like the Real Estate Board of New York on the city planning apparatus. Instead of protecting manufacturing as a valuable resource using zoning and tax breaks, exactly the opposite tack was taken: zoning changes and tax breaks designed to squeeze the little factories out and replace them in accordance with the six-part hierarchy listed above.

The strategy was so successful in Manhattan that by the 1980s, planners started looking across the water for fresh opportunities. Then-Mayor Ed Koch appointed a Commission on the Year 2000—consisting of the usual cast of lawyers, bankers, developers, philanthropists and the like—to plan the transition to a new millennium. The commission published its report, grandly titled New York Ascendant, in 1987, the year of a great stock market crash (though not as great as 1929, the year of the RPA’s plan).

Among other things, it envisioned pushing the central business district out from Manhattan and across the East River into Queens (particularly Long Island City) and Brooklyn (particularly downtown). The development in these frontier zones would be more back-office than executive suite, but it would require the displacement of existing industrial properties (Long Island City) and low-end retail. Of course, planners are too discreet to use the word “displacement”; instead, New York Ascendant describes the agenda as one of improving the “ambiance.”

OVER 800 MASS MORTALITY EVENTS, OVER 2,400 SPECIES DYING

While marine biologists, environmental activists and researchers are baffled over the continued rise of dead dolphins washing ashore along Mumbai’s coastline over the last month, the State Environment Ministry, on the other hand, is completely oblivious to these incidents,
said a report in DNA.

"Recent shifts in the occurrence, cause, and magnitude of animal mass mortality events",
(A peer-reviewed research)
Approved for publication December 22, 2014 (received for review August 5, 2014).

"Our analysis uncovered the surprising finding that there have been recent shifts in the magnitudes of MMEs and their associated causes.

Mass mortality events (MMEs) are rapidly occurring catastrophic demographic events that punctuate background mortality levels. Individual MMEs are staggering in their observed magnitude: removing more than 90% of a population, resulting in the death of more than a billion individuals, or producing 700 million tons of dead biomass in a single event.

Despite extensive documentation of individual MMEs, we have no understanding of the major features characterizing the occurrence and magnitude of MMEs, their causes, or trends through time. Thus, no framework exists for contextualizing MMEs in the wake of ongoing global and regional perturbations to natural systems.

Here we present an analysis of 727 published MMEs from across the globe, affecting 2,407 animal populations. We show that the magnitude of MMEs has been intensifying for birds, fishes, and marine invertebrates; invariant for mammals; and decreasing for reptiles and amphibians. These shifts in magnitude proved robust when we accounted for an increase in the occurrence of MMEs since 1940."

TAKE THOSE 727 MMEs AND ADD THE ONES FROM 2014-2017 AND WE HAVE OVER 800 SUCH REPORTED EVENTS.
WE'D HAVE A LOT MORE THAN THAT IF EVERY EVENT THAT MADE LOCAL HEADLINES SOMEWHERE ON EARTH WERE "RECOGNIZED" AS MMEs.
ALSO, THE TABLES IN THAT STUDY VERY OFTEN DON'T SHOW EVENTS PAST 2000 OR PAST 2010.

AS THE PAPER ADMITS, "
As the actual lag distribution is skewed on the basis of the fact that many events between 1990 and 2014 have likely not been published (SI Appendix, Fig. S3), we only used the data between 1940 and 1990. With these estimated proportions, we could adjust the number of reported MMEs as if all MMEs had been published. "

WAIT...WHAT?
ESTIMATE?
GO FIGURE...
WELL, FUKUSHIMA HAPPENED IN 2011, HAS BEEN PUMPING OUT RADIATION EVER SINCE, SO MAYBE THAT WAS A CUT-OFF DATE?

AS MUCH AS 90% OF SOME SPECIES OF MARINE LIFE HAVE DIED-OFF SINCE 2011.
CBS
Jan. 2015

Thousands of birds fall from the sky.
Millions of fish wash up on the shore.
Honey bee populations decimated.
Bats overtaken by a deadly fungus.
Piglets die in droves from a mysterious disease.

It was tragic stories such as these that prompted a group of researchers from the University of San Diego, UC Berkeley and Yale to embark on a broad review of all the reports of large animal die-offs in the scientific literature since the middle of the last century. They turned up 727 such papers documenting "mass mortality events" (MME) of 2,407 global populations of mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians and marine invertebrates.

Their analyses, published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, revealed that not only are these events becoming more frequent, they're also increasing in magnitude, with the number of fatalities higher for birds, fish and marine invertebrates. Thirty-five events completely or nearly wiped out an entire population.

"Going from one event to 70 each year is a substantial increase, especially given the increased magnitudes of MMEs for some of these organisms," said Adam Siepielski, University of San Diego assistant professor of biology and the study's co-lead author.

The cumulative death toll reaches into the billions... BILLIONS, WITH A 'B'.

WHY ARE SO MANY SEA CREATURES DYING ALONG THE WEST COAST?

~ The collapse of the sardine population, creating a crisis for fisheries and marine wildlife which depend on them as a major food source.
October, fisherman reported that they came back empty-handed without a single fish after 12 hours of trolling and some $1000 spent on fuel.
Sandy Mazza, for the Daily Breeze, reported a similar phenomenon in central California: “[T]he fickle sardines have been so abundant for so many years – sometimes holding court as the most plentiful fish in coastal waters – that it was a shock when he couldn’t find one of the shiny silver-blue coastal fish all summer.

ADD BALEEN WHALES TO THE MME LIST.
Mass mortality events (MMEs) are well known for toothed whales but are rare in baleen whales due to their less gregarious behavior.
While in MOST cases the cause of mortality has NOT been conclusively identified, some baleen whale mortality events have been linked to bio-oceanographic conditions, such as harmful algal blooms (HABs).
In southern Chile, HABs can be triggered by the ocean-atmosphere phenomenon El Niño.
The frequency of the strongest El Niño events has been increasing.

"HABs" WORLDWIDE?
EVEN IN THE ICY WATERS OF THE NORTHERNMOST SEAS?
I SERIOUSLY DOUBT THAT AND LAB TESTS DID PROVE THAT WAS NOT WHAT KILLED THE ALASKAN WHALES, SEALS, WALRUSES AND POLAR BEARS WHO ALL APPEARED WITH SKIN LESIONS, TUMORS, ABNORMAL INTERNAL ORGANS, ESPECIALLY LIVERS AND REPRODUCTIVE ORGANS.

In March 2015, by far the largest reported mass mortality of baleen whales took place in a gulf in southern Chile.
The synchronous death of at least 343 baleen whales (primarily Sei whales) can be attributed to HABs during a building El Niño.

Although considered an oceanic species, the sei whales died while feeding NEAR to shore in previously unknown large aggregations.
This provides evidence of NEW FEEDING GROUNDS for the species.
The combination of older and newer remains of whales in the SAME area indicates that MMEs have occurred more than once in RECENT years.
Large HABs and reports of marine mammal MMEs along the north-east Pacific coast may indicate similar processes in both hemispheres.

AUGUST 25, 2016
In recent months, unusually large numbers of neonates and juvenile Black Sea Harbor Porpoises have washed up on beaches along the Black Sea coasts of Bulgaria and Turkey (more than 150 individuals found along a 22km stretch of coastline in July alone).
For a subspecies that is already considered Endangered, the high mortality of young animals, year after year, could be a serious impediment to recovery.

UNPRECEDENTED MASS DIE-OFFS, END OF 2010 TO JANUARY, 2011, WORLDWIDE

In the final week of December, 2010, 100,000 dead and dying drum fish washed up along a 20-mile stretch of the Arkansas River, about 100 miles west of Beebe, Arkansas.
Shortly before midnight on New Year's Eve, between 3,000 and 5,000 red-winged blackbirds fell from the sky in Beebe.
The Beebe bird deaths were repeated again on New Year's Eve of the following year, 2011, with the reported number of dead birds being 5,000.

January 11, 2011, "Birds Fall From Sky In California, Thousands Of Dead Fish Found In Chicago"

Hundreds of blackbird carcasses littered a quarter-mile stretch of road in Labarra, La., on Jan.3, 2011. after they inexplicably fell from the sky.

Brazilian news site Parana-Online reported that up to 100 tons of dead fish have washed ashore in coastal towns since Dec. 30, 2010.

January 4, 2011, Gilbertsville, Kentucky, Department of Fish and Wildlife confirmed that hundreds of birds, including grackles, starlings, and robins, had been found "scattered around" the town. The birds did not appear to have been poisoned or diseased, and show no signs of trauma.

Beachgoers at Little Bay and Waikawau Bay in New Zealand found "a carpet" of dead snapper floating in the water on Jan. 4, 2011, many of which were missing their eyes. The New Zealand Department of Conservation speculated that the fish starved. (What accounts for missing eyes?)

2 million fish dead in Chesapeake Bay. The fish, which normally migrate to warmer waters this time of year, began washing ashore last week. (This was during the last week of December, 2010) The Maryland Department of the Environment has admitted it's puzzled.

Over 40,000 dead and dying velvet swimming crabs washed up on the shores of Kent in Britain on Jan. 5, 2011.

Jan. 10, 2011, over 700 dead birds had fallen from the sky in Italy. The countless turtle doves were scattered about the town of Faenza, many with strange blue marks in their beaks that some officials suggested may have been signs of hypoxia.

On January 14, approximately two hundred cows were found dead in a field in Stockton, Wisconsin.

BUT THE MASS DEATHS CONTINUED THROUGHOUT 2011

On March 7, 2011, millions of small fish, including anchovies, sardines, and mackerel were found dead in the area of King Harbor at Redondo Beach, California.

From The New Yorker, June 4, 2013, on a gravel strand called Beach 4 on Washington’s Olympic coast, the first official record of an ongoing outbreak of a sea-star wasting disease that has killed millions of starfish from Baja California to southern Alaska, typically wiping out more than 90% of each population it strikes. It’s the greatest wildlife mass-mortality event, or “die-off,” of the present day.

Elizabeth Kolbert described frog and bat die-offs in a 2009 article.

Several disquieting tales have already made the 2015 news cycle, most notably hundreds (THIS BECAME THOUSANDS) of dying sea-lion pups that began turning up on California beaches in January, and two thousand snow geese that dropped out of the sky to die in Idaho in March.

At the time of this writing, the National Wildlife Health Center had recorded fifty-six mass-mortality events in the U.S. so far this year, among them the sudden deaths of fifty black vultures in Ascension Parish, Louisiana; thirteen hundred waterfowl in Humboldt County, California; and two thousand bats in Pierce County, Wisconsin.

The typical number of bird deaths per reported die-off has risen, from about a hundred in the nineteen-forties to some ten thousand today.
The over-all number of bird die-offs also seems to have increased.

“That paper supports a lot of what many of us have been suspecting,” Jonathan Sleeman, a wildlife epidemiologist who heads the National Wildlife Health Center, said. “I do think we’re seeing more catastrophic events.”

Every biologist I spoke with who is researching mass-mortality events said that many wildlife die-offs today really could be signals of serious problems with the ecological fundamentals of the planet."

USGS AND NWHC REPORTS
The National Wildlife Health Center (NWHC) produces quarterly mortality reports to the USGS containing information about wildlife mortality events throughout the United States and on occasion across North America.
Their website with access to collected mortality data can be accessed <HERE>.
Data is available from 1981 to first quarter 2017.
For me, it was a heartbreaking read when first I discovered it, and still is today.

Then, more recently, we have WHISPers, a Wildlife Health Information Sharing Partnership event reporting system with current and historic information on wildlife morbidity or mortality events in North America. Events typically involve five or more sick or dead wild animals observed in the same general location and time period. This information is collected opportunistically and provided there by multiple State, Federal, and other agencies to enhance collective understanding of disease in wildlife populations.

NOAA provides us with a somewhat 'tilted' version of "Mass Marine Mortality Events" on its website.
"From 1991 to the present, there have been 63 formally recognized UMEs in the U.S., involving a variety of species and dozens to hundreds of individual marine mammals per event."

FORMALLY RECOGNIZED...BY NOAA, AND NOAA DOESN'T "RECOGNIZE" EVERY EVENT.
NOAA ALSO IS NOT BIG ON DIAGNOSING EVENTS UNLESS THE DIAGNOSIS FITS WHAT NOAA WANTS DIAGNOSED.

FOR EXAMPLE:
"Causes have been determined for 32 of the 63 UMEs documented since 1991."

Have a look at their "UNDETERMINED" in the list <HERE>. Just scroll down a bit.

MIND-BLOWING, ISN'T IT?
SO MUCH DEATH HAPPENING ALL AROUND US, NO MATTER WHERE WE ARE ON EARTH, AND YET WE READ VERY LITTLE ABOUT IT, AND OFTEN, WHEN WE DO, THE ARTICLE WILL BASICALLY STATE, "DON'T WORRY, BE HAPPY", OFFER NO PROVEN REASONS FOR THE DEATHS, OFFER NO SOLUTIONS, POSSIBLE REMEDIES FOR THE AFFECTED SPECIES AND NEVER ADDRESS IT AGAIN.

HERE'S SOMETHING ELSE WE MAY NOTICE...EVEN WHEN MARINE LIFE ARE SUCKED INTO INTAKE PIPES AT NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS, THOSE POWER PLANTS ARE NEVER, OR SELDOM, LISTED AS THEIR CAUSE OF DEATH.
ISN'T THAT ODD?
IT IS NOT ALWAYS "RED TIDE", OR EL NINO, OR ANY OTHER CONVENIENT DIAGNOSIS, YET THE ARTICLES, EXCEPT FOR A FEW OUT OF CANADA, NEVER MENTION RADIATION.

NO, I DON'T THINK ALL THESE DEATHS WERE CAUSED BY RADIOACTIVE WATER, SOIL, AIR, BUT SOME WERE.
WHY NOT JUST SAY SO?
WHY?
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$,  THAT'S WHY.

IT WOULD COST TOO MUCH TO SHUT-DOWN AND CLEAN UP EVERY NUCLEAR REACTOR.
UNTIL THAT CHANGES,SOMEHOW, WE'LL JUST KEEP SEEING "UNDETERMINED CAUSE OF DEATH" AND, IT APPEARS TO ME THAT THE MAJORITY OF THE WORLD'S POPULATION WILL ACCEPT "UNDETERMINED" AND MAYBE NOT MISS THOSE BILLIONS OF CREATURES WHO HAVE DIED AND WILL DIE IN DAYS, WEEK, YEARS, DECADES, CENTURIES AHEAD.

I'LL MISS THEM.
I'LL MISS THEM ALL.

A POSTSCRIPT:
In 1983, long-spined sea urchins, then a common Caribbean species, began to waste away; their bony casings soon littered shorelines from Panama to Florida. The species had been abundant for a long time, possibly hundreds of thousands of years, but within thirteen months its population had declined by 98%.
Even today, the urchins number not much more than 10% of their former plenitude.
I remember well how plentiful those fragile creatures were along Florida beaches.
I regret very much that my grandchildren and great grandchildren will never see them in the numbers they once existed.

As the most fragile go, so go we all.

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill released 134 million gallons of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico making it the largest oil spill in US history and exposing fish, birds, and marine mammals throughout the Gulf of Mexico to its toxicity. Fish eating waterbirds such as the double-crested cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus) were exposed to the oil both by direct contact with the oil and orally through preening and the ingestion of contaminated fish.

This study investigated the effects of orally ingestedMC252 oil-contaminated live fish food by double-crested cormorants on oxidative stress. Total, reduced, and oxidized glutathione levels, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities, total antioxidant capacity and lipid peroxidation were assessed in the liver tissues of control and treated cormorants.

The results suggest that ingestion of the oil-contaminated fish resulted in significant increase in oxidative stress in the liver tissues of these birds.
Do you see?
They never actually say that's what killed them and will continue to kill them because no oil company is forced to clean up their murderous messes.

The Tea Room sincerely thanks the one website dedicated to keeping close watch over the dying and reporting their demise.
