ONE OF THE FIRST RUMORS I HEARD AS A CHILD WAS THAT AMERICA HAD FAILED TO FIND A WAY TO GET TO THE MOON, INDEED TO GET PAST THE VAN ALLEN BELTS, PERIOD.
1~ WE HAD NOT GONE TO THE MOON AFTER ALL, SOME "EXPERTS" SAID, AND MANY HASTEN TODAY TO POINT OUT ONE REASON WHY SO MANY WERE SKEPTICAL...
THE VAN ALLEN BELTS AND THE INABILITY OF HUMANS TO SURVIVE LARGE DOSES OR EVEN S,ALL 'PROTRACTED' DOSES OF IONIZING RADIATION.
"Since the last Apollo Mission in 1972 when men reportedly traveled 240,000 miles from the surface of the Earth, no manned mission has gone more than 600 miles from Earth, and the majority of missions have gone no more than 200 miles from the Earth’s surface.

Just 8 years later, NASA reportedly sent men all the way to the Moon, where they disembarked their space craft, walked about on the Moon, collected samples, planted a flag, held a phone call with the American President, spent 22 hours on the lunar surface, and then blasted off and returned to Earth, having spent a total of 8 days in space....FLAWLESSLY, WITHOUT A HITCH, AND WITH LESS THAN A 1% CHANCE OF PULLING IT OFF.
2~ THE SECOND 'MAJOR' RUMOR WE HEARD WAS THAT ASTRONAUTS HAD SEEN AND HAD RECORDED AN EXTRATERRESTRIAL PRESENCE ABOVE EARTH AND A LUNAR ALIEN PRESENCE AS WELL.
LATER, BOTH BUZZ ALDRIN AND NEIL ARMSTRONG WOULD SPEAK OF THE ALIENS ON THE MOON WHO "TOLD US TO MOVE" AND WHO "WARNED US OFF".
ALDRIN AND ARMSTRONG ALSO SPOKE OF THE UFOs ABOVE THE LUNAR SURFACE AND ALIEN BUILDINGS THERE.

To back his claims up, Leonard even published the identifying code numbers belonging to the original images in his work.
Leonard was yet another NASA employee who had spoken out about what was found on the moon, which is seen in some of the images taken during the Apollo missions.

So who are the other 2?
According to the show, two other pilots were shown, but they weren't astronauts, at least by NASA standards.
One was X-15 pilot Mike Adams who was the only X-15 pilot killed during the X-15 flight test program.
Mike Adams, though not a NASA astronaut, had flown his X-15 above 50 miles which is considered space and technically, he could be considered an astronaut along with a number of the other X-15 pilots.
The other was Robert Lawrence, a would be Air Force Manned Orbiting Laboratory pilot who died in a jet crash shortly after reporting for duty to that program.
Later, they claim that the Apollo 1 fire may have been a murder conspiracy to silence Gus Grissom's outspoken criticism of the Space Program.
His hanging a lemon on the Apollo simulators has been widely misinterpreted as dissatisfaction with the entire Apollo program.
The pro-hoaxers also claim that the death of NASA worker Thomas Baron was a murder and a coverup of a 500 page report on the Apollo 1 accident. A more likely version of the story is that the man might have committed a murder/suicide in distress over the loss of the crew. It's amazing that more workers didn't do the same.
These unfounded claims of murder and conspiracy are libelous, particularly as they lack any significant evidence to support those claims."

EVEN ARMSTRONG ADMITTED HE HAD HIS DOUBTS...
Neil Armstrong, after the moon landing, became reclusive, inaccessible, only on rare occasions granting very brief interviews on the subject. His aversion to speaking publicly about the Apollo 11 Mission was so well known that when he finally granted an interview 43 years later, the ABC news commentator in speaking of Armstrong’s interview expressed surprise.
IT MAY BE INTERESTING TO NOTE THAT ALL PILOTS WHO EVER FLEW MR. ARMSTRONG ANYWHERE ON A PRIVATE JET WERE TOLD TO NEVER TRY TO DISCUSS THE MOON LANDING WITH HIM...IT WAS A FORBIDDEN SUBJECT.

THE SECOND "MAN ON THE MOON", BUZZ ALDRIN, ALSO HAD SOME VERY "DARK" YEARS AFTER APOLLO 11 AND HAS STATED SEVERAL TIMES THAT HE, ARMSTRONG AND COLLINS DIDN'T EXACTLY "GET ALONG", THAT THEY HAD PERSONALITY CLASHES AND DID NOT COMMUNICATE MUCH AFTER THEIR RETURN TO EARTH.
HIS CLASHES WITH ARMSTRONG SOMETIMES MADE THE NEWS. In a July 8, 2009 article in the UK’s The Telegraph newspaper, a most unusual piece was written on the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Mission.

Asked if he is still in touch with Armstrong or Michael Collins...
“Well,” Aldrin says, not quite answering the question, “they have personalities that are different, each one, and they’re different than mine. We worked together as a very close team, not jocular but very seriously determined to carry out [the task] we were given.”
So it was a professional relationship?
“Absolutely professional, yes.”
And it didn’t continue after Apollo 11?
“Not that much. Hardly at all.”
He sees Armstrong very rarely: the last time was at Nasa’s 50th anniversary celebrations in 2008. “I was expected to be there,” he says, adding in passing an observation that throws a revealing light on their relationship:
“No one mentioned that I was there.”
Did they chat?
“Not really.”
There was no conversation?
“Not particularly.”
"It just doesn’t seem proper any more for me to ask him to come to things I’m involved in. And he doesn’t ask me. He doesn’t let me know what he’s doing…”
After Apollo 11, the 39-year-old Aldrin found it difficult to readjust to life on Earth.
His marriage of 21 years soon broke up, he remarried in haste and was divorced for a second time within two years.
His military career ended after an unhappy stint as commandant of the USAF test-pilot school. (He had been a fighter pilot, with 66 combat missions over Korea in the early Fifties, but never a test pilot.)
He began to suffer acutely from depression, and finally confronted the fact that he was an alcoholic."

HE THINKS WE SHOULD BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR INCOMING OBJECTS THAT CAN DESTROY EARTH OR DO A LOT OF MAJOR DAMAGE FROM WHICH WE MIGHT NOT RECOVER,

There is too much smoke here not to be fire, and so I personally in the last couple of years have come out - I don't know the answers, but I've come out - and I say, this has gone far enough.
If it's real, let's get it out in the open; let's break the deadlock that bureaucracy has on this.
There is enough evidence pointing in the direction that clearly there is information being withheld. How far we can go with it, I don't know."
~ ASTRONAUT GORDON COOPER:
On May 15, 1963 he shot into space in a Mercury capsule for a 22 orbit journey around the world. During the final orbit, Major Gordon Cooper told the tracking station at Muchea (near Perth Australia) that he could see a glowing, greenish object ahead of him quickly approaching his capsule.
The UFO was real and solid, because it was picked up by Muchea's tracking radar.
Cooper's sighting was reported by the National Broadcast Company (NBC), which was covering the flight step by step; but when Cooper landed, reporters were told that they would not be allowed to question him about the UFO sighting.
Major Cooper was a firm believer in UFOs.
Ten years earlier, in 1951 he had sighted a UFO while piloting an F-86 Sabrejet over Western Germany. They were metallic, saucer-shaped discs at considerable altitude and could out-maneuver all American fighter planes. Major Cooper also testified before the United Nations:
"I believe that these extra-terrestrial vehicles and their crews are visiting this planet from other planets... Most astronauts were reluctant to discuss UFOs." "I did have occasion in 1951 to have two days of observation of many flights of them, of different sizes, flying in fighter formation, generally from east to west over Europe."
And according to a highly controversial taped interview by J. L. Ferrando, Major Cooper said:
"For many years I have lived with a secret, in a secrecy imposed on all specialists in astronautics. I can now reveal that every day, in the USA, our radar instruments capture objects of form and composition unknown to us. And there are thousands of witness reports and a quantity of documents to prove this, but nobody wants to make them public.
Why?
Because authority is afraid that people may think of God knows what kind of horrible invaders. So the password still is: We have to avoid panic by all means."
"I was furthermore a witness to an extraordinary phenomenon, here on this planet Earth. It happened a few months ago in Florida. There I saw with my own eyes a defined area of ground being consumed by flames, with four indentions left by a flying object which had descended in the middle of a field. Beings had left the craft (there were other traces to prove this).
They seemed to have studied topography, they had collected soil samples and, eventually, they returned to where they had come from, disappearing at enormous speed... I happen to know that authority did just about everything to keep this incident from the press and TV, in fear of a panicky reaction from the public."
~ DONALD "DEKE" SLAYTON, a Mercury astronaut, revealed in an interview he had seen UFOs in 1951:
"I was testing a P-51 fighter in Minneapolis when I spotted this object. I was at about 10,000 feet on a nice, bright, sunny afternoon. I thought the object was a kite, then I realized that no kite is gonna fly that high."
As I got closer it looked like a weather balloon, grey and about three feet in diameter. But as soon as I got behind the darn thing it didn't look like a balloon anymore. It looked like a saucer, a disk.
About the same time, I realized that it was suddenly going away from me - and there I was, running at about 300 miles per hour. I tracked it for a little way, and then all of a sudden the damn thing just took off. It pulled about a 45 degree climbing turn and accelerated and just flat disappeared."
~ On July 17, 1962 MAJOR ROBERT WHITE reported a UFO during his fifty-eight-mile high flight of an X-15.
Major White reported: "I have no idea what it could be. It was grayish in color and about thrity to forty feet away."
Then according to a Time Magazine article, Major White exclaimed over the radio: "There ARE things out there! There absolutely is!"
~ On May 11, 1962 NASA pilot JOSEPH WALKER said that one of his tasks was to detect UFOs during his X-15 flights.
He had filmed five or six UFOs during his record breaking fifty-mile-high flight in April, 1962. It was the second time he had filmed UFOs in flight.
During a lecture at the Second National Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Space Research in Seattle, Washington he said: "I don't feel like speculating about them. All I know is what appeared on the film which was developed after the flight." - Joseph Walker
To date none of those films has been released to the public for viewing.

~ EUGENE CERNAN was commander of Apollo 17.
In a Los Angeles Times article in 1973 he said, about UFOs:
"...I've been asked (about UFOs) and I've said publicly I thought they (UFOs) were somebody else, some other civilization."
~During the Gemini 4 mission, pilot JIM MCDIVITT spotted an object that he described as a "white cylindrical shape with a white pole sticking out of one corner of it." He took two pictures of it.
McDivitt maintains that it was some unknown but man-made piece of debris.
~In a transcript of Gemini 7 mission, the astronauts mention a "bogey" which ufologists have claimed was a reference to a UFO.
"Officially", NASA describes the astronauts' comments about a "bogey" as referring to booster-associated debris, and not a reference to some sort of UFO.
In December 1965, Gemini astronauts JAMES LOVELL and FRANK BORMAN saw the UFO during their second orbit of their record-breaking 14 day flight.
Borman reported that he saw an unidentified spacecraft some distance from their capsule. Gemini Control, at Cape Kennedy told him that he was seeing the final stage of their own Titan booster rocket.
Borman confirmed that he could see the booster rocket all right, but that he could also see something completely different.
Lovell: BOGEY AT 10 O'CLOCK HIGH.
Capcom: This is Houston. Say again 7.
Lovell: SAID WE HAVE A BOGEY AT 10 O'CLOCK HIGH.
Capcom: Gemini 7, is that the booster or is that an actual sighting?
Lovell: WE HAVE SEVERAL...ACTUAL SIGHTING.
Capcom: ...Estimated distance or size?
Lovell: WE ALSO HAVE THE BOOSTER IN SIGHT...
Borman later stated that what he saw was not a UFO.

Yes, and we weren't sure but what it might be the S-IVB. We called the ground and were told the S-IVB was 6,000 miles away. We had a problem with the high gain about this time, didn't we ?
Collins:
There was something. We felt a bump or maybe I just imagined it.
Armstrong:
He was wondering whether the MESA had come off.
Collins:
I don't guess we felt anything.
Aldrin:
Of course, we were seeing all sorts of little objects going by at the various dumps and then we happened to see this one brighter object going by. We couldn't think of anything else it could be other than the S-IVB. We looked at it through the monocular and it seemed to have a bit of an L shape to it.
Armstrong:
Like an open suitcase.
Aldrin:
We were in PTC at the time so each of us had a chance to take a look at this and it certainly seemed to be within our vicinity and of a very sizeable dimension.
Armstrong:
We should say it was right at the limit of the resolution of the eye. It was very difficult to tell what shape it was. And there was no way to tell the size without knowing the range or the range without knowing the size.
Aldrin:
So then I got down in the LEB and started looking for it in the optics. We were grossly misled because with the sextant off focus what we saw appeared to be a cylinder.
Armstrong:
Or really two rings.
Aldrin:
Yes.
Armstrong:
Two rings. Two connected rings.
Aldrin:
Yes.
Collins:
No, it looked like a hollow cylinder to me. It didn't look like two connected rings. You could see this thing tumbling and, when it came around end-on, you could look right down in it's guts. It was a hollow cylinder. But then you could change the focus on the sextant and it would be replaced by this open book shape. It was really weird.
Aldrin:
I guess there's not too much more to say about it other than it wasn't a cylinder.
Collins:
It was during the period when we thought it was a cylinder that we inquired about the S-IVB and we'd almost convinced ourselves that's what it had to be. But we don't have any more conclusions than that really.
The fact that we didn't see it much past this one period --- we really don't have a conclusion as to what it might have been, how big it was, or how far away it was. It was something that wasn't part of the urine dump, we're pretty sure of that.
Buzz Aldrin took color movie film of the LUNAR UFOs from inside the module, and continued filming them after he and Armstrong went outside.
Armstrong confirmed that the story was true but refused to go into further detail, beyond admitting that the CIA was behind the cover-up.
In his book "RETURN TO EARTH" Colonel Edwin E. "BUZZ" Aldrin Jr. writes the following on pages 223-224;
"In the middle of one evening, Houston time, I found myself idly staring out the window of the Columbia and saw something that looked a bit unusual. It appeared brighter than any star and not quite the pinpoints of light that stars are.
I pointed this out to Mike and Neil, and the three of us were beset with curiosity. With the help of the monocular we guessed that whatever it was, it was only a hundred or so miles away.
Looking at it through our sextant we found it occasionaly formed a cylinder, but when the sextant's focus was adjusted it had a sort of illuminated "L" look to it. It had a shape of some sort -- we all agreed on that -- but exactly what it was we couldnt pin down. We asked Houston some casual questions: "How far away is the Saturn third stage?" The response was in the vicinity of six thousand miles. That wasn't it.
It could possibly have been one of the panels of the Saturn third stage which fly off to expose the LM and cannot be traced from earth. We could see it for about forty-five seconds at a time as the ship rotated, and we watched it on and off for about an hour. We debated whether or not to tell the ground we had spotted something, and decided against it.
Our reason was simple: The UFO people would descend on the message in hordes, setting off another rash of UFO spottings back on earth. We concluded it was most likely one of the panels. Its course appeared in no way to conflict with ours, and it presented no danger. We dropped the matter there."

~ In August 2013, according to NASA TV, astronaut CHRISTOPHER CASSIDY saw a UFO float past the International Space Station near its Progress 52 cargo ship.
It was soon identified by Russian flight controllers as an antenna cover from the Zvezda service module."

Chatelain believes that some UFOs may come from our own solar system, specifically Titan.

"I think that WALTER ("WALLY") SCHIRRA aboard Mercury 8 was the first of the astronauts to use the code name 'Santa Claus' to indicate the presence of flying saucers next to space capsules.
However, his announcements were barely noticed by the general public. It was a little different when James Lovell on board the Apollo 8 command module came out from behind the moon and said for everybody to hear:
'PLEASE BE INFORMED THAT THERE IS A SANTA CLAUS.' "
In 1979 Maurice Chatelain, former chief of NASA Communications Systems confirmed that Armstrong had indeed reported seeing two UFOs on the rim of a crater.

Another interesting claim comes from DR. JOHN BRANDENBERG, who was the Deputy Manager of the Clementine Mission to the Moon
The mission discovered water at the Moon’s poles in 1994.
BRANDENBERG STATED:
“It was (the Clementine Mission) a photo reconnaissance mission basically to check out if someone was building bases on the moon that we didn’t know about. Were they expanding them?”
“Of all the pictures I’ve seen from the moon that show possible structures, the most impressive is a picture of a miles wide recto-linear structure.
This looked unmistakably artificial, and it shouldn’t be there.
As somebody in the space defense community, I look on any such structure on the moon with great concern because it isn’t ours, there’s no way we could have built such a thing. It means someone else is up there.”
Officially, NASA and scientists around the globe have spoken out about aliens, and how they expect we will discover signs of extraterrestrial life in the next 20 years or so. However, many people believe these statements are a mere preparation for a disclosure movement that is going to change everything we believed about mankind, our origin, and life in the universe."

NASA can’t find original tape of moon landing.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. government has misplaced
the original recording of the first moon landing, including
astronaut Neil Armstrong's famous "one small step for man, one
giant leap for mankind," a NASA spokesman said on Monday.
Armstrong's famous space walk, seen by millions of viewers
on July 20, 1969, is among transmissions that NASA has failed
to turn up in a year of searching, spokesman Grey Hautaloma
said.
"We haven't seen them for quite a while. We've been looking
for over a year and they haven't turned up," Hautaloma said.
The tapes also contain data about the health of the
astronauts and the condition of the spacecraft.
In all, some 700 boxes of transmissions from the Apollo
lunar missions are missing, he said.
Because NASA's equipment was not compatible with TV
technology of the day, the original transmissions had to be
displayed on a monitor and re-shot by a TV camera for
broadcast.
Hautaloma said it is possible the tapes will be unplayable
even if they are found, because they have degraded
significantly over the years -- a problem common to magnetic
tape and other types of recordable media.
The material was held by the National Archives but returned
to NASA sometime in the late 1970s, he said.
"We're looking for paperwork to see where they last were,"
he said."

In an article, “Man’s Greatest Achievement”, Tesla outlined his Dynamic Theory of Gravity in poetic form:
"That the luminiferous ether fills all space.
* That the ether is acted upon by the life-giving creative force.
* That the ether is thrown into “infinitesimal whirls” (“micro helices”) at near the speed of light, becoming ponderable matter.
* That when the force subsides and motion ceases, matter reverts to the ether (a form of “atomic decay”).
Tesla’s Anti-gravity technology would help him create the ultimate Flying Saucer… Space Ship, by taking advantage of the electromagnetic fields which would allow his invention to travel from the ground towards the sky with extreme speed and facility.
Tesla found out that powerful electromagnetic waves could be used to push against (and pull against) what appears to be ’empty space’.
The drive principle is based on the Hall-effect used in semiconductor magnetic sensors, and is called the magnetohydrodynamic (“MHD”) effect.

In a lecture Tesla prepared for the Institute of Immigrant Welfare (May. 12, 1938), he dealt with his Dynamic Theory of Gravity. Tesla said in his lecture that this was:
“One of two far reaching discoveries, which I worked out in all details in the years 1893 and 1894.”
TESLA'S DISAGREEMENT WITH EINSTEIN'S THEORY OF RELATIVITY WAS 'INFAMOUS', A "SACRILEGE".
AS TESLA PUT IT:
"According to the relativists, space has a tendency to curvature owing to an inherent property or presence of celestial bodies. Granting a semblance of reality to this fantastic idea, it is still very self-contradictory.
Every action is accompanied by an equivalent reaction and the effects of the latter are directly opposite to those of the former.
Supposing that the bodies act upon the surrounding space causing curvature of the same, it appears to my simple mind that the curved spaces must react on the bodies and, producing the opposite effects, straighten out the curves."
“Since action and reaction are coexistent, it follows that the supposed curvature of space is entirely impossible – However, even if it existed it would not explain the motions of the bodies as observed. Only the existence of a field of force can account for them and its assumption dispenses with space curvature. All literature on this subject is futile and destined to oblivion.”
In the 1980s he was proven to be right.
A study of energy loss in a double neutron star pulsar called PSR 1913 + 16 proved that gravity waves exist. Tesla’s idea that gravity is a field effect is now taken more seriously than Einstein took it.
Unfortunately, Tesla never revealed exactly what had led him to his conclusion that Einstein was wrong.
He never fully explained his theory of gravitation to the world.
The attack he made on Einstein’s work was considered outrageous by the scientific establishment of the time, and only now do we have enough understanding of gravity to realize that he was right."
ENTER THE GERMAN SCIENTISTS AT REDSTONE, AND THE GERMAN SCIENTISTS WHO WERE TAKEN TO RUSSIA....SCIENTISTS WHO PROBABLY HAD KNOWLEDGE OF THE NAZI GERMANY EXPERIMENT CALLED "DIE GLOCKE", KNOWN AS THE "BELL TECHNOLOGY" (AN ANTI-GRAVITY EXPERIMENT).
"Allegedly an experiment carried out by Third Reich scientists working for the SS in a German facility known as Der Riese ("The Giant") near the Wenceslaus mine and close to the Czechoslovakian border, Die Glocke is described as being a device "made out of a hard, heavy metal" approximately 2.7 meters (9 ft) wide and 3.7 to 4.6 meters (12 to 15 ft) high, having a shape similar to that of a large bell.
This device ostensibly contained two counter-rotating cylinders which could be "filled with true mercury (VERY hard to come by in such great quantities!) or a mercury-like substance, violet in color".
This violet-colored metallic liquid was code-named "Xerum 525" and was "stored in a tall thin thermos flask a meter high encased in lead".
Additional substances said to be employed in the experiments, referred to as Leichtmetall (light metal), "included thorium and beryllium peroxides".
Igor Witkowski, a Polish writer/investigator, describes Die Glocke, when activated, as having an effect zone extending out 150 to 200 meters (490 to 660 ft).
Within the zone, crystals would form in animal tissue, blood would congeal and separate while plants would decompose into a grease like substance.
Allegedly, five of the seven original scientists working on the project died in the course of the tests.
Based upon certain external indications, the ruins of a concrete framework—aesthetically dubbed "The Henge"—in the vicinity of the Wenceslas mine (50°37′43″N 16°29′40″E), some 3.1 kilometers (1.9 mi) southeast of the main Complex Sokolec underground works of Project Riese, may have once served as a test rig for an experiment in "anti-gravity propulsion" generated with Die Glocke."

NEXT, AMERICA'S "EXPLORER I" AND WHAT WAS DISCOVERED THAT ONLY NOW BEGINS TO COME TO LIGHT... TESLA'S ANTI-GRAVITY, REVISITED.
"Explorer I was launched at 10:48 PM EST, January 31, 1958 from Pad 26A, at Cape Canaveral.
The Jupiter-C rocket (C standing for "composite") that successfully launched this first US satellite into the Florida skies was actually a converted "Redstone" military ICBM -- a rocket developed as a US Army advancement over their earlier "V-2s," by Wernher von Braun and his imported team of "Operation Paperclip" German Nazi rocket engineers to the United States, in the decade immediately following World War II.
Explorer I's best-known, unclassified contribution to space science was the discovery of the famed “Van Allen” radiation belts, named for the University of Iowa physicist, James van Allen, who first found (via his radiation detectors aboard Explorer I, confirmed by the two successor Explorer III and IV spacecraft) the high-energy “donuts” of charged particles circling the Earth, trapped by its "dipole" magnetic field.
Of ultimately far more scientific significance was the unannounced, unpublished, almost unknown "ANOMALOUS ORBITAL DYNAMICS" exhibited by this same satellite on its very first orbit that night.
As would later finally come to light, but not in major media, Explorer I’s actual trajectory, unambiguously and most disturbingly, seemed to violate two basic laws of 20th Century Physics, immediately after launch...
As the scientists anxiously awaited news of the satellite's successful trajectory, nothing but silence came from the few existing tracking stations in use at that early stage of 'space exploration'.
Indeed, only ONE such station in California could assure them that the launch had indeed placed Explorer I into its proper orbit.
The scattering of stations seen in other parts of the world -- such as the one in central Australia -- did not yet have the proper equipment to detect Explorer I's radio frequencies, having been originally planned to support the Navy's Vanguard Program.
Thus, when the spacecraft disappeared over the South Atlantic horizon from Cape Canaveral that evening, after being launched "downrange" (the line extending southeast from Florida), there was essentially no way for von Braun (or anyone else) to track it, to KNOW from "telemetry" (radioed information) if "his" satellite had been successfully placed in orbit by the Jupiter C, or not.
They simply had no choice but to wait, and wait, and wait...
Explorer I, moving at about 18,000 miles per hour (5 miles per second), had almost completely circled the entire world and SHOULD have come back around within range of special radio receivers set up in the deserts just north of San Diego, California, a place called Earthquake Valley.
Only after all this "waiting and nail biting"and an equally archaic mode of communicating "success" when it was finally learned (over a single telephone line stretching between California and Washington DC) would, or could, anyone that night really KNOW that Explorer I had successfully made it into orbit.
That key signal from California was expected at about 12:30 AM EST, February 1, 1958.
But there was still SILENCE, NO word of the satellite, NONE.Then it was 12:31 ... then, 12:32 ... and more nothing.By 12:41 AM it was all but certain, Explorer I had burned up somewhere above the earth in its failed attempt to reach orbit.
Von Braun would later directly write about his roller coaster emotions during that "interminable wait," in a piece entitled "The Story Behind the 'Explorers,'" appearing in the Des Moines Sunday Register, April 13, 1958:
“... the bird was due in California about 12:30 A.M., EST. We had four tracking stations there poised to pick up its signal, and Bill [Pickering] had them on the long-distance phone.
“Twelve-thirty came. There was no signal.
“A minute went by. And another. And another, without a beep from the satellite.
Eight minutes elapsed and still they didn’t hear a thing.

BUT THEN, INCREDIBLY, AT 12:42 AM, EST, THERE IT WAS!
IT WASN'T LOST!
Explorer I had just been "late."
But ... why?
George Ludwig -- Van Allen's chief assistant, and designer of the ~18 pounds of batteries and custom-made radiation-monitoring equipment on-board Explorer I -- described his own automatic first reaction--

The orbit had been expected to have a perigee (lowest height above the Earth) of about 220 miles and an apogee (greatest height) of about 1000 miles. The perigee and apogee heights were actually 223 miles and, more significantly, 1592 miles, respectively, with an orbital period of 114.7 minutes rather than the 105 minutes that had been originally anticipated ...."
With the belated acquisition of Explorer I by Earthquake Valley, von Braun, Van Allen and Pickering were whisked from the Pentagon to the more "scientific" National Academy of Sciences, for a packed 2:00 AM press briefing.
AMERICA WAS FINALLY IN SPACE, IN THAT "SPACE RACE" WITH THE RUSSIANS FOR "SPACE SUPREMACY".
Lost in all the well-deserved self-congratulations and press adulation was the nagging real reason for Explorer I's agonizing delay at Earthquake Valley: its "higher than planned" orbit.WHAT HAD CAUSED SUCH A HIGHER ORBIT, SUCH A LONG DELAY IN ITS APPEARANCE ABOVE CALIFORNIA THAT EARLY MORNING?
WHAT COULD EXPLAIN THIS MYSTERY?
BY MOST STANDARDS THAT JUPITER C ROCKET WAS QUITE "PRIMITIVE", TOTALLY INCAPABLE OF LAUNCHING THE SATELLITE INTO SUCH A HIGH ORBIT, BUT THERE IT WAS!
"Because so few at that time were familiar with rocketry at all, it was assumed by all the "non-rocket scientists", and by the press, that some sort of "variable" in the Jupiter-C's upper stages easily accounted for the rocket's additional performance, for those who paid any attention at all to that higher orbit, and very few did, initially.
That "everyone assumed" this was the case, is obvious because, it is equally obvious that no one at the time (at least, anyone who will talk) actually sat down and carried out even the most basic of "rocket calculations", of just how "over-efficient" von Braun's Jupiter-C had to have been to result in anything even approaching Explorer I's MUCH higher-than-expected orbit.
Fifty years after the fact,some HAVE done those calculations, with some spectacular and very thought-provoking results.
The foundation of all true "rocket science" is--
The “Rocket Equation”
Wp = Wi * (1 - e**(-dV/g*ISP))
Wp = weight of propellant expended during the thrust arc.
Wi = initial weight of the vehicle.
V = delta velocity change.
g = Earth's gravitational acceleration (32.174 ft/sec^2)
ISP = specific impulse of the engine (and fuel) in use.
Solving for dV (the final rocket velocity), the equation becomes:
dV = -g*ISP*ln(1- Wp/Wi)
In terms of determining if the JPL upper stages could have achieved the performance levels required to place Explorer I into its higher-than-expected orbit, we began by looking at the published parameters of the solid rockets JPL used in constructing those stages for von Braun's final "composite" rocket.

This was pretty standard stuff, even if its ISP was fairly poor, compared to almost any liquid chemical rocket fuels in use today; the ISP varied from about "220 seconds" in the atmosphere, to about "235 seconds" in a good vacuum (because, contrary to common misperception, rocket engines actually work best in a pure vacuum -- when the thrust exhaust isn't slowed down by the surrounding air.
The Smithsonian data sheet also neatly listed the "fueled" and "empty weight" of each Jupiter-C stage."
LONG STORY MADE SHORT, THE FUEL AND THE FORMULA JUST DON'T EQUATE TO SUCH A HIGH ORBIT....SOMETHING ELSE HAD TO HAVE "BOOSTED" THE SATELLITE FROM THE PLANNED ORBIT OF "220 by 1000 miles" TO ITS ACTUAL ORBIT OF "223 by 1592 ", "almost 600 miles higher at apogee than nominal".
THE "UNPLANNED" ORBIT WAS ALSO MORE ELLIPTICAL.

"According to NASA the astronauts were kept cool by a personal refrigeration system that pumped water round their space suits. I am very interested in this system. I wonder how water, whose boiling point is around 100°C on Earth, would really behave on the atmosphere-less Moon, in temperatures of 117°C. Its boiling point would already be very low, so in daytime would it not instantly turn to steam, with no heat-absorbing properties to speak of? I wonder too about that heating system the Lunar Module must have had, capable of combating temperatures of -163°C. It is a technological marvel NASA has boasted little about.
The Lunar Module itself, the space suits, the communications equipment and so on. It seemed all to have functioned perfectly throughout the Moon landings, despite the extreme conditions it had to endure. Take the cameras and the film for instance. It is remarkable that NASA could find film that could survive temperatures above boiling point and still deliver pictures of such clarity, not to mention radio and TV equipment that could send signals with so little interference. It all seems a little too good to be true."
There is one final anomaly I would like to draw to your attention and it concerns once again the Lunar Module, the two-staged craft that was able to land astronauts on the Moon then take off again and dock with the orbiting Command Module.
It concerns in particular the rocket fuel used to power it.
The Lunar Module had two separate engines, one for the descent and one for taking off.
The fuel that powered these engines was neither the liquid oxygen and hydrogen mix used in the other Apollo craft nor the solid type used later on in the Shuttle.
It used a special type of propellant comprising two separate substances: Aerozene 50 (the fuel) and nitrogen tetroxide (the oxidiser).
These substances are known as hypergolic, which is to say they combust spontaneously when brought into contact with one another. An engine that can be fired this way does not need an external ignition device, which is why the system was deemed suitable for the Lunar Module.
A particular feature of this hypergolic fuel mixture is that when it combusts it gives off a very dense and opaque RED exhaust plume which is so thick it is impossible to see through it.
This fact alone raises at least two interesting questions in respect of the Moon landings as they have been presented.
1~ Firstly, how were Neil Armstrong and all the later Lunar Module pilots able safely to land on the Moon when their vision was so obscured by thick red smoke?
The Lunar Module was a craft entirely in the control of its crew and relied on their visual reading of the lunar terrain in order to make a safe landing.
The dense exhaust would have been at its most profuse at the most critical moment in the landing of the craft; when it was within a few metres of the Moon's surface and seeking a flat area to land upon.
Yet remarkably the Lunar Module made six perfect landings on to six ideal landing sites, despite the fact that its pilots were virtually blind to the Moon's surface beneath them as they landed.
I would be happy to allow Armstrong et al. the benefit of the doubt and put this down to piloting excellence or luck, were it not for the second and perhaps most telling question raised by the Lunar Module's exotic, hypergolic fuel.
2~ Why is there no thick red exhaust visible in the TV pictures of the Lunar Module taking off from the Moon's surface?
On the last three Apollo missions, from Apollo 15 onwards, the astronauts took with them the Lunar Rover, the four-wheeled buggy that gave greater mobility on the Moon's surface and also spiced up the TV transmissions no end.
The Lunar Rover carried its own TV camera and, at the end of each of these three missions, the camera was pointed towards the Lunar Module so viewers could see its ascent section blast off from the Moon.
In each case, the footage shows NO SIGN OF THICK, RED SMOKE coming from the ascent engine.
Indeed, THERE IS NO SMOKE SEEN AT ALL; the ascent section of the Lunar Module appears, inexplicably, to blast off from the Moon with no sign of any engine activity whatsoever.
Small explosive charges separate the ascent section from the lower section, then the craft simply shoots rapidly and effortlessly up into the sky with no trace of smoke or any discharge from its engine.
I believe it impossible that this footage represents a true depiction of the Lunar Module taking off from the Moon.
I believe what we see is clearly a studio effect — and not a very good one at that.
A Lunar Module is simply hoisted upwards from a gantry high above.
For some reason, the film-makers forgot to give the ascent section any engine smoke as it took off.
It is perhaps one of the most important and revealing oversights of the whole Apollo deception.
Let's consider those radio conversations ... those between the crewmen and Mission Control. There is something seriously wrong here and it crops up on all the Apollo missions: there's no regular time lag between Mission Control speaking and an astronaut replying. Those guys were supposed to be almost 250,000 miles away.
Traveling at the speed of light (around 186,000 mile per second) the radio waves carrying Mission Control's words would have taken approximately 1.25 seconds to reach the Moon and a reply from the astronaut would take the same time to come back.
There should therefore be a definite (and tiresome) pause of at least 2.5 seconds between Mission Control speaking and an astronaut replying.
There isn't.
The only pauses are natural pauses, while someone thinks or is distracted; for the most part the astronauts and Mission Control are chatting away in real time, with no time lags.
This is simply not possible.
It is worth noting also that, despite the fact that the Lunar Module's descent engine is supposedly running at almost full throttle during this scene, no engine noise whatsoever can be heard in the background.
If you concentrate on the Moon's surface, it's hard to figure out what's going on; the Moon doesn't seem to change or really get any closer.
At no time do its craters or rocks seem to be more than and inch or so deep or high. The surface doesn't get any more detailed, nor its features any larger or more three-dimensional.
It looks pretty much the same from four thousand feet as it does from three feet.
Features that should have been great rocks or craters when seen from a great height turn out to be tiny pebbles or depressions beneath the Lunar Module as it lands.
The perspective is just all wrong.
If you run the sequence through at double speed you'll see exactly how the effect of descent is achieved; by the camera lens simply zooming in.
There's another thing about the Moon.
I noted earlier its (FIRST LUNAR LANDING) similarity to the pictures used for Apollo 8 and this in itself might not seem unusual.
If you look closely however you will see that they are identical.
Though the pattern of craters and other features is largely random, this not entirely the case. There is at least one singular feature, a distinctive tadpole-shaped crater, which can be seen on both occasions. Though it may just be within the bounds of coincidence that the two crews should pass over this same feature with cameras rolling on both occasions, the point is that it is actually the same piece of film.
The light, angle and distance are identical; the feature passes across our screens in precisely the same way. The same footage is clearly being used again. To be perfectly frank, the 'lunar surface' is simply a large plaster of Paris model — just as Lovell wryly remarks on Apollo 8."
