Why has a flame retardant chemical banned in Europe and Japan been used as an ingredient in North American sodas for decades? If you live in the United States and drink citrus-flavored sodas such as Mountain Dew, you ARE ingesting this substance that has health professionals up in arms. A synthetic chemical known as brominated vegetable oil (BVO) — first patented by chemical companies as a flame retardant — is increasingly being identified as a threat to your health, but soda companies still have yet to remove BVO as an ingredient.

Added to sodas in North America for decades, BVO has reportedly led to soda-drinkers experiencing skin lesions, memory loss, and nerve disorders. Interestingly, these are all the symptoms of overexposure to bromine. What is most concerning is the fact that studies have found that BVO can actually build up in human tissue, accumulating in large quantities over periods of soda consumption.
“Aside from these reports, the scientific data is scarce,” said Walter Vetter, a food chemist at Germany’s University of Hohenheim and author of a recent, but unpublished, study on BVO in European soda imports.

#1~ Ingredients: Coloring agents (blue 1, blue 2, yellow 5, and yellow 6)
Found In: Cake, candy, macaroni and cheese, medicines, sport drinks, soda, pet food, and cheese
Why the U.S. Allows It: We eat with our eyes. “Recent studies have shown that when food manufacturers left foods in their natural, often beige-like color instead of coloring them with these chemical agents, individuals thought they tasted bland and ate less, even when the recipe wasn't altered,” Calton says. This may explain why the use of artificial dyes—the most popular being red 40, yellow 5, and yellow 6—have increased five-fold since 1955.
Health Hazards: Back in the day, food coloring came from natural sources, such as saffron and turmeric. “Today most artificial colors are made from coal tar, which is also used to seal-coat products to preserve and protect the shine of industrial floors,” Carlton says. “It also appears in head lice shampoos to kill off the small bugs.”

    FD & C Yellow No. 5 – breakfast cereal, jams, snack foods, packaged soups, gelatin desserts, dry drink powders, candy, ice cream, spaghetti, bakery products, pudding. May cause palpitations, weakness, hives, itching and in children, irritability, restlessness and sleep disturbances. People allergic to aspirin can be allergic to this dye. This is derived from petroleum distillates.

    FD & C Yellow No. 6 – bakery items, cereals, snack foods, desserts, drinks, ice cream, canned fish, some medications. Possible side effects are abdominal discomfort, allergies, hyperactivity, hives, kidney tumors, nausea and vomiting. This is derived from petroleum distillates.

    FD & C Blue No. 1 – dairy products, jellies, icings, syrups, extracts, drinks, sweets (banned in many countries, except the U.S.) An artificial (synthetic) food dye of bright blue hue derived from petroleum distillates. Inadequately tested. Current studies suggest a cancer risk.

    FD & C Blue No. 2 – (used in textile dyeing and printing) baked goods, ice cream, cereals, snack food, confections, cherries. May cause nausea vomiting, high blood pressure. Derived from petroleum distillates. Suspected of causing brain tumors in animals. Banned in Norway.

    FD & C Red No. 2 – used in cake mixes. Can encourage asthma and hyperactivity. Documented cases of birth defects, Red Dye # 2 showed that extremely small amounts of Red Dye # 2 caused birth defects, stillbirths, fetal deaths, and sterility in rats. This WAS banned in the U.S.

    FD & C Red No. 3 - used in dental labs, radiologic imaging, printing inks and food dye. Found in sweets, baked goods, condiment and snack foods. Can cause sensitivity to light and thyroid hormone levels. May lead to hyperthyroidism. Consumption of Red No. 3, which has estrogen-like growth stimulatory properties and may be genotoxic, could be a significant risk factor in human breast carcinogenesis. Ladies, Red No. 40 is commonly substituted for Red No. 3.

    FD & C Red No. 40 – orange soda, cosmetics, donuts, tattoo ink. The National Cancer Institute reported that p-credine, a chemical used in preparation of Red #40, is carcinogenic in animals. The FDA permanently listed Red #40 for use in foods and ingested drugs but only temporarily listed it for cosmetics and external drugs.

The preceding is only a small list of the various dyes that are used in foods, medicines, cosmetics and body products to make them look appealing. Considering all processed foods, most cosmetics and grocery store body and hair products contain chemicals and additives, it is no wonder colors are needed to make them appear edible and attractive.

#2~ Ingredient: Olestra (aka Olean)
Found In: Fat-free potato chips
Why the U.S. Allows It: Procter & Gamble Co. took a quarter century and spent a half a billion dollars to create “light” chips that are supposedly better for you, Calton says. They may need another half a billion bucks to figure out how to deal with the embarrassing bathroom side effects (including oily anal leakage) that comes with consuming these products.
Health Hazards: “This fat substitute appears to cause a dramatic depletion of fat-soluble vitamins and carotenoids, robbing us of the vital micro-nutrients," Calton says, adding that many countries, including the U.K. and Canada, have banned it.

#3~ Ingredient: Brominated vegetable oil (aka BVO)
Found In: Sports drinks and citrus-flavored sodas
Why the U.S. Allows It: BVO acts as an emulsifier, preventing the flavoring from separating and floating to the surface of beverages, Calton says.
Health Hazards: “Because it competes with iodine for receptor sites in the body, elevated levels of the stuff may lead to thyroid issues, such as hypothyroidism, autoimmune disease, and cancer,” Calton says. That's not all. BVO's main ingredient, bromine, is a poisonous chemical that is considered both corrosive and toxic. It's been linked to major organ system damage, birth defects, growth problems, schizophrenia, and hearing loss, which explains why it's been nixed in more than 100 countries.

#4~Ingredient: Potassium bromate (aka brominated flour)
Found In: Rolls, wraps, flatbread, bread crumbs, and bagel chips
Why the U.S. Allows It: This flour-bulking agent helps strengthen dough, reducing the amount of time needed for baking, which results in lowered costs, Calton explains.
Health Hazards: Made with the same toxic chemical found in BVO (bromine), this additive has been associated with kidney and nervous system disorders as well as gastrointestinal discomfort. “While the FDA has not banned the use of bromated flour, they do urge bakers to voluntarily leave it out,” Calton says.

#5~ Ingredient: Azodicarbonamide
Found In: Breads, frozen dinners, boxed pasta mixes, and packaged baked goods
Why the U.S. Allows It: While most countries wait a week for flour to naturally whiten, the American food processors prefer to use this chemical to bleach the flour ASAP.
Health Hazards: It's not enough to just ban this product in Singapore. You can get up to 15 years in prison and be penalized nearly half a million dollars in fines for using this chemical that's been linked to asthma and is primarily used in foamed plastics, like yoga mats and sneaker soles.

#6~ Ingredients: BHA and BHT
Found In: Cereal, nut mixes, gum, butter, meat, dehydrated potatoes, and beer
Why the U.S. Allows It: “Made from petroleum [yummy!], these waxy solids act as preservatives to prevent food from becoming rancid and developing objectionable odors,” Calton says. A better solution may be natural rosemary and sage. In a 2006 study, some organic herbs and spices proved to be efficient at preventing oxidative decay in meat, which ultimately could improve the shelf-life of these products.
Health Hazards: California is the only state that recognizes the U.S. National Institute of Health's report that BHA is a human carcinogen, a cancer-causing agent.

#7~ Ingredients: Synthetic hormones (rBGH and rBST)
Found In: Milk and dairy products
Why the U.S. Allows It: Gotta keep moo-ving things along. Dairy farmers inject cows with genetically-engineered cow growth hormones to boost milk production by about 10 percent, according to Calton.
Health Hazards: “Cows treated with these synthetic hormones often become lame, infertile, and suffer from inflamed and infected udders,” Calton says. Humans, who consume these cows byproducts, are in no better shape, she adds: “The milk is supercharged with IGF-1 (insulin growth factor -1), which has been linked to breast, colon, and prostate cancers.”

#8~ Ingredient: Arsenic, YES, ARSENIC IS ALLOWED IN OUR FOODS!

Why the U.S. Allows It: Big brother FDA permits arsenic in chicken feed to promote growth, improve efficiency in feeding the birds, and boost pigmentation. “The arsenic affects the blood vessels in chickens and turkeys, causing them to appear pinker and, therefore, fresher,” Calton says.
Health Hazards: The European Union has outlawed the use of arsenic since 1999, Calton says, and the Environmental Protection Agency classifies inorganic arsenic as a "human carcinogen." Take matters into your own hands by sticking to organic birds only.

In Australia, Japan, and all of the countries in the European Union, there are significant restrictions or outright bans on the production of GMOs, because they are NOT considered proven safe. LONG AFTER we stop eating GM foods, we may still have their GM proteins produced continuously inside us. This could mean:
1~If the antibiotic gene inserted into most GM crops were to transfer, it could create super diseases, resistant to antibiotics
2~If the gene that creates Bt-toxin in GM corn were to transfer, it might turn our intestinal bacteria into living pesticide factories.

ALSO, BTW, France is expected to call for an official ban on Monsanto's genetically-modified (GM) corn very soon "at a European level," according to the French news source RFI. Following the recent release of a University of Caen study that found a link between the "Frankencorn" and the development of severe tumors in rats, French officials have been urging a Europe-wide ban on both the cultivation and import of the GM corn, which was never proven safe in the first place prior to its commercial release.
The study, which was published in the peer-reviewed journal Food and Chemical Toxicology, revealed for the first time that rats fed Monsanto's NK603 GM corn treated with Roundup (glyphosate) herbicide for longer than 90 days developed deadly tumors at a much higher, and much quicker, rate than rats not exposed to these products. Similar health consequences were observed in rats fed NK603 GM corn without Roundup, as well as in rats exposed to just Roundup, revealing more about the true toxicity of these two highly-pervasive food technologies.]

The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) doesn’t think GMOs are safe.

The Academy reported that “Several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with GM food,” including infertility, immune problems, accelerated aging, faulty insulin regulation, and changes in major organs and the gastrointestinal system. The AAEM asked physicians to advise patients to avoid GM foods.
Before the FDA decided to allow GMOs into food without labeling, FDA scientists had repeatedly warned that GM foods can create unpredictable, hard-to-detect side effects, including allergies, toxins, new diseases, and nutritional problems. They urged long-term safety studies, but were ignored.

Since then, findings include:

    ~Thousands of sheep, buffalo, and goats in India died after grazing on Bt cotton plants
    ~eating GM corn for the long term had fewer, and smaller, babies
    ~More than half the babies of mother rats fed GM soy died within three weeks, and were smaller
    ~Testicle cells of mice and rats on a GM soy change significantly
    ~By the third generation, most GM soy-fed hamsters lost the ability to have babies
    ~Rodents fed GM corn and soy showed immune system responses and signs of toxicity
    ~Cooked GM soy contains as much as 7-times the amount of a known soy allergen
    ~Soy allergies skyrocketed by 50% in the UK, soon after GM soy was introduced
    ~The stomach lining of rats fed GM potatoes showed excessive cell growth, a condition that may lead to cancer.
    ~Studies showed organ lesions, altered liver and pancreas cells, changed enzyme levels, etc.
