3-D PRINTED OBJECTS FORMED BY SOUND WAVES. CHLADNI & MOIRE' PATTERNS. SOUND BECOMES FORM.

ASTOUNDING WHAT HUMAN MINDS CAN COME UP WITH.

ONE COMPANY IS PRINTING SCULPTURES FROM SONGS, WHICH CAN BE SCANNED AND "PLAYED BACK".

BELOW ARE PHOTOS OF CERAMICS THAT WERE 3-D PRINTED, BUT IN WHICH SOUND WAVES WERE ALLOWED TO SHAPE THE DESIGNS IMPRINTED ON THEM.

THE ARTIST IS OLIVIER VAN HERPT

THIS IS, BRIEFLY AND INCOMPLETELY, HOW THIS IS DONE.

"Music can be tangible like architecture.
Chladni patterns visualize resonance patterns of sound in a miraculous way. Salt or a similar substance is poured on a thin metal plate that is resonating on a clear tone. Every frequency will have it’s own symmetrical organic drawing appearing.

The device used is called a Chladni plate.
Inspired by CT scan technology, the process of transformation within the drawing on the Chladni plate is made three dimensional.
A sound fragment becomes a spatial recording."
SOLID VIBRATIONS

"A moment in time, a song a sound, they can now become objects that encapsulate the moment forever.
Vibrations turned into shapes by the 3D Printer.

A specially constructed speaker rig mounted below the build platform produces very low sound.

These amplify and create Moiré patterns on the 3D Printer.

Olivier had noted previously that the printer produced Moiré patterns naturally. This error was an interesting one. Rather than eliminate it, he turned to sound designer Ricky
van Broekhoven, who specializes in sound design, and teamed up with him to see if they could make objects from sound waves.
There is a video of the results on the website at http://oliviervanherpt.com/solid-vibrations.

BELOW IS THE "SOUND SCULPTURE OF WAGNER'S "RIDE OF THE VALKYRIES".
THE SECOND, BLACK-AND-WHITE, PHOTO IS A CLOSEUP SHOWING THE INTRICACIES OF THE PATTERNS THE SOUND OF "VALKYRIES" MAKES ON A SOLID OBJECT.

There is a video of the above technique at http://www.thisiscolossal.com/2015/04/turn-songs-into-3d-printed-sculptures-you-can-listen-to-with-reify/.

A new company called Reify aims to put those same sound wave interpretations in your hands, as 3d-printed sculptures. Lead by founder and CEO Allison Wood, the team is creating software that turns any snippet of audio—from rock music to spoken poetry—into curious objects 3d-printed from bronze, plastic, or even coconut husk.
Reify is also creating software that allows you to ‘scan’ the sculptures with your phone to interpret them back into audio.
It’s not clear from their concept video if the music is recognizable, but that’s probably not the point. These sound sculptures seem to be more about visual presentation than media like vinyl or a phonograph.

BELOW, 3-D PRINTED FIBONACCI ZOETROPE SCULPTURES

These 3d-printed zoetrope sculptures were designed by John Edmark, and they only animate when filmed under a strobe light or with the help of a camera with an extremely short shutter speed. He shares about the project:
These are 3-D printed sculptures designed to animate when spun under a strobe light. The placement of the appendages is determined by the same method nature uses in pinecones and sunflowers. The rotation speed is synchronized to the strobe so that one flash occurs every time the sculpture turns 137.5º—the golden angle. If you count the number of spirals on any of these sculptures you will find that they are always Fibonacci numbers.
For this video, rather than using a strobe, the camera was set to a very short shutter speed (1/4000 sec) in order to freeze the spinning sculpture.

If you happen to have a 3D printer handy, you can find instructions on how to make these over on Instructables. (via Stellar)

FINALLY FOR THIS BLOG, A COMPANY OFERS 3-D PRINTS OF YOUR HUMAN VOICE SPEAKING A PHRASE AND CONVERTS THAT TO WEARABLE SILICONE BRACELETS.
Each bracelet comes with an RFID chip that contains the actual sound file, which can be played with a separate app or on the Wavelet wesbite.

AMAZING STUFF, RIGHT?

THIS CAME TOO LATE FOR VALENTINE'S DAY, BUT MAYBE MY GROWN CHILDREN WOULD JUST LOVE TO HAVE BRACELETS WITH MY "GENTLE REMINDER" OF
"CLEAN YOUR ROOM OR THE KITTEN DIES!" FOR THEIR BIRTHDAYS?

(A PRIVATE JOKE)
